Doctor Who: Season 10

After watching the newest episode last night, I have to say it was pretty enjoyable. My main problem is that (SPOILER) there was no real sense of dread or anything for Matt Smith's impending doom. We knew this was his last episode and that Peter Capaldi was next. We never got the feeling that this could possibly be the end. I honestly wish we could have had that suspense of "is this the end? What could be next for Doctor Who?"

Also, I have issues with how the Doctor got new regenerations. For one, it does bother me that Clara has essentially become that "big red button" that can be pressed and all the problems presented to the Doctor are magically fixed. Moreso, I just wish we didn't get the idea that he was given a new cycle of regenerations. I wish we could have had an explanation such as he survives due to River giving up her regenerations, but that he wouldn't really know how much longer he has left. I think it would be interesting to have a Doctor who is actively facing his mortality like what we got a glimpse of with Matt Smith with this episode.

I absolutely adored how smurfing creepy Capaldi looked. Like man, just suddenly there, and his big bushy brows and intense stare. As a recent watcher of the series I can't say too much else but I really appreciate what I've seen of Matt Smith and I think he did a smurfing phenomenal job. Lots of feels in that episode, even trout like the Cyberman head dying and trout. Obviously would've been way way better if we didn't know of Capaldi's existence but whatyagonnado.

A lot of the returning elements felt like they were shoehorned in ineffectively. Like, no need to hit us over the head with stuff: fans of this series are, from what I can tell, pretty smurfing savvy. They can tie up loose ends themselves (and some loose ends left are smurfing excellent imo). But yeah, I feel like this is a good time to get on the Who train.

(SPOILER) I agree with the shoehorned notion of some of the returning elements. The episode was still a lot of fun despite some of the things that could have made it better. Matt Smith's performance was excellent, and I also got kind of teary-eyed when Handles died.

I'm excited to see what Capaldi will be like.

(SPOILER)Things I felt didn't work well were the sudden disappearance of the Weeping Angels (I honestly missed the explanation of why they left, although I have been assured it was in the episode) and the Silence's sudden heel face turn, which was explained in the story but wasn't really given enough time to have an impact.

It's also not clear how the Doctor being given a new regeneration cycle ties in with his "death" on Trenzalore or if this is why Clara and the Great Intelligence could enter his timestream there, but maybe supplemental materials will expand on it.

As for the new regeneration cycle thing feeling cheap, though, the possibility of a regeneration cycle has been present in the series ever since the regeneration limit was first introduced (indeed, it's arguably the whole reason the regeneration limit was introduced in the first place), so the possibility has been there ever since the regeneration limit was a thing.

i hope i'm wrong but it really does sort of feel like a golden age just ended

I'm re-posting this from Facebook. A dream I had last night!

I had the best Doctor Who dream last night. I know it messes up the timeline presented in The Name of the Doctor, but IDGAF.

So, the premise of the dream was that Eleven was still trying to figure out Clara (the Impossible Girl) and while he's freaked that she keeps showing up as the same, yet different, no one knows exactly what it is that's freaking him out the most. Clara wants to know why he's been acting so strange and melancholy around her (just like in the second half of season seven) and the Doctor explains to her that sometimes when he regenerates, he'll use some of his "old favorites" and regenerate into a previous incarnation of himself (as told to us by the Curator in The Day of the Doctor). He tells Clara that his first incarnation--the First Doctor--had the same face as he has now when he was a young man. He then gives her a picture showing that the wife of the First Doctor was the first Clara, and that's why he's so intent on figuring out who and what she is.

Sorry I just out-wrote you, Steven Moffat!

The episode had a lot of flaws, but they are forgiven due to naked Matt Smith. Hot damn.

It was a decent episode. Smith's speech towards the end was pretty good.

I'm really excited about Capaldi. It's unfortunate, as Jiro said, that this episode was kinda pissed on by the fact that everybody already knew about the new Doctor - they really smurfing should have kept that secret, the silly blighters. But god damn, it's Capaldi. I can't wait.

I've wanted an older, hopefully somewhat grumpier, Doctor for a while. I loved... argh, I forget which one, but I loved the Doctor that kept getting bothered by having to save humans. I'm hoping Malcolm Tucker will be less "Oh, humans I love you, oh please I want your Earthticles in and around my mouth". I loved Eccleston, Tennant and Smith to bits, and I'm very confident I'll love Capaldi; I just hope the writers aren't afraid to get their feet a bit wet and their hands a little dirty with him. I'd like to see more of a Doctor who does what's necessary, as I feel this will draw the writers away from their repeated use of miracles and deus ex machina to solve their problems.

AHHEHEHEHEEEE. I can't wait till August. :(

On that note, I would've liked to have seen The Master as an anti-hero. I'm specifically thinking of John Simm's incarnation rather than the EVIL MAN WITH DODGY BEARD predecessors. Inspired by the Doctor trying to make him realise it's just the two of them left and there's no need for any of this. Then the two of them go off, travelling the universe, and The Master isn't afraid to solve problems like a badass, and there being conflict between him and The Doctor for the way he does things. The Doctor does The Right Thing, but it's not as damned effective as The Master's solutions. Maybe the Doctor's female companion could find the bad boy attitude sooo dreaaaamy~ too for some added tension.

Not really relevant now that the Time Lords are back now though but ah well.

Sadly, I think the whole reason they revealed it when they did was because they couldn't keep it a secret for that long. They already faced one big leak going into the 50th Anniversary concerning the War Doctor, someone somewhere would have spilled the beans before December.

Moffat is already talking about a new raw direction for the show with Series 8 so the Doctor being slightly darker than before might not be far off the mark. Unless he's lying, he does that.

Probably because of all the lying he did during the 50th to keep the secrets from being leaked. Like saying Paul McGann wasn't coming back. He admitted to lying during an interview for TV Guide too. And because rule 1 and it's fun to say.

I want to start with the 9th doctor series one and work my way up to the latest episode. Followed by possibly going back and watching the older doctor who episodes on netflix.

Do a lot of people start with the 9th? Is that a good order?

Yes. Be forewarned Netflix is terrible at having Doctor Who episodes, and then there are those you won't find at all because they were lost or taped over by BBC. Dailymotion is another good place to find the old black and white episode, that's how I managed to watch an Unearthly Child.

Netflix does have nearly all the NuWho episodes, but I think it's missing Planet of the Dead (though to be fair, it's not really an essential episode to see). You will have to find the specials from after Tennant's fourth season manually, though; they're not with the other Doctor Who episodes, or at least they weren't when I was watching them on Netflix about a year ago. (These occur chronologically between series four and Matt Smith's entrance in series five, and if you skip them you will be completely lost).

Starting with Eccleston and going forth is definitely a great way to do things, though. It's what I did as well. Just make sure you don't skip Classic Who entirely; it's given the name for a reason, as quite a few serials are definitely classics. In particular I strongly recommend The Caves of Androzani and Genesis of the Daleks.

Two episodes in and I've already seen the destruction of Earth while Britney Spear's "Toxic" plays in the background. How zany is that?

Also re: Netflix. Planet of the Dead was naff. If it's missed The Waters of Mars then you have a problem!

Took a while for me to get into Nine. Didn't help that I started from 5 > 6 > 7 part-1 and then 1 and by the time I started to like him he regenerated.

Second time I watched through his serial I liked him even more and he quickly became one my favorites.

But Rose later talks to a guy who has pictures of the Doctor throughout history in different places. Is it really possible he hadn't looked at himself in all that time?

Theres a theory that when he disapears for a few seconds at the end of the episode after Rose declines the offer he travels around alone for a while then comes back and says "By the way did I mention it also travels in time"

I think Eccleston is my favorite doctor so far.

Eccleston is one of my favourites as well, though I couldn't possibly choose a favourite overall.

I just got done with the series 2 finale and I've gotta say it's at the top of my list for favorite episodes so far. Aside from the touching moments at the end, I enjoyed the argument between the Cybermen and the Daleks. "The only thing you're better at than the Daleks is dying!".


I was wondering what happened to Captain Jack from the first season than I read up and realized he's in Torchwood. Have any of you watched that? When is a good time to start? Should I wait for a certain point in Doctor Who before I watch?

I read somewhere that if Eccleston wanted to be in the 50th anniversary special, he would have done John Hurt's part. Well, sort of. He can't very well be the Doctor before the 9th Doctor :p. But he would have filled that third role.

And for whoever was wondering, Netflix and Hulu do have the christmas specials and what not. For example, that first special between series 1 and 2 is just labeled as Series 2 Episode 1 on Netflix.

I never watched Torchwood. It began running in October 2006 which would place it in-between Series 2 and 3 so you could probably watch the first serial of that now.

Torchwood's not as good as DW on the whole, but it's still worth watching. It starts out pretty uneven but improves in quality for most of the first two series. The miniseries Children of Earth is up to the quality of at least most of DW.

So for UK television do you always refer to seasons as series or is this a Doctor Who thing, because it's really confused me in this thread :confused:

They refer to them all as serials. It's America that calls them seasons.

Actually, serials are stories of the earlier Doctor Who episodes from before the revival (which usually consist of four to six episodes), while a series generally refers to a season of television. But to make things even more confusing, classic Who is generally numbered as seasons one to twenty-six, while modern Who starts with series one and goes up to the forthcoming series eight (with Capaldi). I think they did this just to confuse Americans, personally.

Just got done with season 3 yesterday and I think this is a good article:

I think a lot of people disliked Martha just because she fell in to the unfortunate position of "The companion after Rose". Rose is my favorite companion but Martha was great! :)

Yeah I think following up Rose really did her in. Martha was my least favorite, but I did like her. I know I hated Donna the very first episode she appeared but once I had some time to get used to Martha not being Rose and she was brought in as a companion Donna really grew on me.

Martha was my least favorite, but part of that is just with her being after Rose. She has a lot going for her, but I felt like they focused too much on her being in love with The Doctor and pining after him. That was the most annoying thing about Tennet's run to me: everyone just seemed to fall in love with him. Martha is in general a good, strong character though.

It's been a while since I've watched the episodes with her in it too, so I could be remembering things wrong as well.

Did I mention how much I like Capaldi's costume yet? No? Well I really like Capaldi's costume.

It's kind of bland, but I don't hate it.

I just watched the series 4 episode about the Volcano in Pompeii and I thought "That's Peter Capaldi!". Sure enough, it was. But it turns out there could possibly be an explanation for Mr. Capaldi showing up in the whoniverse twice before starring as the twelfth Doctor:

I wouldn't complain if they did sweep it under the rug. BBC recycles their actors, it's nothing new. It happened with Colin Baker, Freema Agyeman, etc.

Karen Gillan too, and TV Tropes has a bunch more examples.

I heard about Karen, I just didn't know which episode she appeared in. Funny that it's the same one Peter is in.

So given all of that, I don't see why the writers here feel a need to give a in-universe explanation and my gut instinct is, "Oh, God, it's going to be something stupid, isn't it?"

But we'll see.

If they're going to explain Peter being there (which I love, by the way), I think it'd be awesome if they explain Karen being there too.

They'll probably let that one slide. It's hard to even recognize her with the face paint she had on.

I don't think they need to explain Peter being in the old episode. They never explained Gillian having appeared. Any explanation would likely be painfully forced, in a show that already strains the credulity on a semi-regular basis.

That would be so awesome. I would love to see that episode made. Actually anything with more McGann would be highly welcome, or for that matter any past Doctor. Yes, even Colin. Especially Colin. He demonstrated in the audio dramas that he's as awesome a Doctor as the others; he just was given troutty material. Having him be given proper material onscreen would be epic.

I like it. I think (I hope) it's representative of the more serious nature of this Doctor. I can only hope that in the opening moments of the next episode he becomes frustrated with the TARDIS and yells "smurfity fly!"

OMG. I am FINALLY almost caught up. Just have to watch the specials and I will be fully in the loop.

It has been hard avoiding this thread for so long. I think I finally started watching Doctor Who sometime late last year. And then I had to wait for Netflix to put up the latest season.

And then I can watch Torchwood. And then the classic DW.

If all you're missing are the newest specials than by all means start Torchwood. I think the latest crossover between the two is the end of season 4 of DW.

Torchwood series one coincides with series three of the new DW, while Torchwood series two coincides with series four of the new DW. Series three of Torchwood and on really have nothing in common with the continuity of DW (which is no doubt a product of Russell T. Davies leaving the crew of DW) so you're pretty much safe to watch all of them if you've completed Tennant's run.

Torchwood: Children of Earth is amazing, btw. The general rule with the first two series of Torchwood is that they get better as they progress.

On an unrelated note, did anyone see this fan-created trailer?

Voice sounds like Davros at the beginning before going full Dalek. Some are speculating it might be Dalek Time Controller from the Big Fish audios or Dalek Caan. So far it's sounding like we may get a darker Doctor as many have been hoping for going into the Twelfth.

Saw this at half-time in the World Cup. Getting excited for it.

The first episode of Doctor Who season 8 will be playing in cinemas across America.

It will be playing on the 25th, two days after the shows television premiere. However, the running time will be 100 minutes because there will be an exclusive prequel before the show as well as a behind the scenes feature afterwards.

The closest theater to me that's playing this is roughly 50 minutes away. Not too bad. I'd like to go. We'll see!

Doctor Who has really enjoyed their theater stuff lately.

That's because it's making money. Fathom made something like $4 million off of the 50th anniversary. And to be honest, it's pretty brilliant marketing. Why watch it at home when you can spend less than a price of a regular movie ticket and go see it on a movie screen? Especially when they throw in extras that you can't catch at home.

Hey, I'm not complaining. The extras are worth it and it's fun! :)

The social aspect of theater is great as well. It's a great way to make friends with like-minded people. Although some of the Tennant fan-girls are a little scary. I guess that applies to all fandoms, though.

In my case it's either playing in a theater nowhere near me or on a day no one is available to take me.

I didn't make it to the most recent Doctor Who theater event but my husband saved me the poster with David Tennant on it :love:

Clara's just too perfect, I guess. I think Jenna's acted her wonderfully, but I was really bored with the answer of what she is. It's built up and built up and a total letdown. We hardly even know her for who she is as a character outside of being the Impossible Girl.

Don't mistake someone being pretty and a good actress as being a good character. Look at Martha Jones, for god's sake.

Watch Time of the Doctor again (you should anyway regardless of this) and watch the scene with her Gran where Clara hugs her or the scene where she's left behind or the scene where she reads out that "joke" and rests her head on his knee or the scene where she talks to the crack and say she's a bland character.

Her back story is very bland. She's not well fleshed out at all. And the things you're pointing out (in my opinion) are examples of JENNA being a good actress, not Clara being a well-written character. I don't even hate Clara or anything (she's still a much better character than Martha Jones) I just don't feel super emotionally attached to her, because we never really get to know her. All of her thing revolves on finding out what/who she is (which was a total letdown because it was the most obvious answer) and hardly any time is actually spent developing her as someone you feel like you know or care about.

Anyways, Clara's story is played out. There's not really anywhere for her to go. I'd like to see a male companion or an older woman. Less romancey stuff.

EDIT: I just want to point out again that my feelings of apathy aren't a criticism on Jenna at all. I think she's very talented and adorable as heck. I was just really, really excited by the prospect of Clara, and I don't think they did a very good job with writing her. But this isn't me hating on Jenna they way I hate on Emilia Clarke (who is a bad actress in addition to Dany being one of/the worst character on the show).

It's not confirmed that Jenna is leaving at Christmas, by the way. The actors have taken sheer delight in trolling us as to whether she'll be departing or not.

I can't wait to see how they explain the two big plot points that they brought up: Clara's telephone call to the TARDIS and Twelve's face. I loved this episode and I can't wait for more!

Agreed. To be honest, in parts it seemed like the episode was still written for Matt Smith instead of Capaldi. I loved when they picked him, so I'm hoping that as he settles into the role and the writers feel him out better and flesh out the Doctor's new personality, he'll start to shine more.

Enjoyed this episode. Can't wait to see how the new Doctor is going to be once he isn't running around totally unsure of himself.

I also wasn't a fan of Donna. Rory is the best companion by far.

It was a good episode. A bit more Clara development which is nice. I do hope they pick up some new companions as companions start to become boring when theyre only there to be a counterpart of the doctor, but when there are a few around they can alternate between being counterparts and being their own characters.

I did not like the new opening. The other openings made me think "This is a device thats travels through time and space". The cogs and spiraling clockface make me think "This is a show with a device that travels through time and space". The face in the opening was pretty good though, not as striking as Matt Smith's face in the stars but the frowning eyes make a statement.

I don't think there's anything they need to explain about the phone call. It was just a way for Smith's Doctor to tell Clara that it'll be okay since she never witnessed a regeneration before, and he likely neglected to tell her given he thought it was his last.

As for the mention of the face, I think it was probably just acknowledging that Capaldi has been on the show before. Could be wrong, but it would explain why he recognizes his face.

I was camping over the weekend so I've only just been able to watch Deep Breath.

Overall, I can't really see the criticism. As regeneration stories go it served as a good introduction to our new doctor without actually having him in practically every scene. It certainly wasn't a 'Doctor lite' episode, but there were less of him than one would expect in an introductory episode.

The story took a back seat but then most regeneration episodes was never about the villain of the week. The dinosaur was just there, and possibly there to connect the doctor's own feelings of loneliness. Really, to be fair, the first third of the story is the weakest. For me, the episode grew on me more as it continued. The first part was pretty heavily CGI. Really, the story really only moved on for me when the dinosaur combusts.

The trio of Jenny, Strax and Vastra are hilarious as ever and provides a nod a sense of the familiar with the new Doctor. Really the primary theme of the story is identity and belonging. The cyborg doesn't know who he is anymore, replacing spare part after spare part until he has nothing original left, and he is inimitably lonely and almost sympathetic as villains go. The Doctor meanwhile, has to contend with a new body, new emotions, and trying to convince Clara that he is still the same man. The last bit with the Cyborg and the Doctor in that escape pod, talking about who was lying about their basic programming. Deep stuff.

In fact, the whole mystery surrounding whether the doctor pushed the Cyborg or not is a very interesting one and taps into the question as to whether the Doctor's morality is the same as ever. Clara's slow acceptance of her new doctor is an interesting one, brought into force when he simply states "I'm not your boyfriend". Whether or not I found Clara annoying in the episode is a tough one, because it is such a change. Tennant to Smith wasn't so huge a change, but Smith to Capaldi is, I think. I think by the end of the episode she's accepted the difference.

This episode was as much a regeneration episode as it is a rethinking episode for Clara. I agree with the idea that a new companion is needed. I think Clara and the Doctor's relationship is well enough established, to the point that Clara's identity and story is basically how she relates to the Doctor. Another companion would be great as it showcases Clara's relationships to others, not just the Doctor.

We don't know who Missy is, or what her supposed 'Promised Land' is. It all seems fairly strange, and I think she's probably the main villain of this series. Her relation to the Doctor is going to be very important, I think.

Overall, I really liked it. I like it enough to write a fairly long piece on it anyway. While the primary story is fairly straightforward as stories go, it is what happens in the interactions that really shape the episode. In other words, it is character driven, as opposed to story driven, and I really loved it.

I think they were talking about adding a second companion over the summer. Somebody who works at the same school as Clara?

Ugh, just realized I said "seen" instead of "scene".

yeah I realized that after i posted this xD I guess I was just so caught up in excitement over the whole episode that i didn't quite catch that right away.

Again, another alright episode but nothing special. A couple of nice moments from him but Capaldi's Doctor still doesn't quite have that charisma or presence.

Also Dolorous Edd adding to the amassed ranks of actors who have been in both GoT and DW.

Yeah, nothing special. I'm having a hard time getting psyched about this season, to be honest.

I was way more interested about what was going on between Clara and Mr. Pink than I was about any Dalek nonsense.

I'm not sure if I'm watching the same episode as you guys. I haven't the time to do a full write-up just yet, but I loved the episode.

Peter Capaldi has great presence. The two episodes I've seen so far can be described as 'profound', in my opinion. If the theme of the first episode was identity, the theme of the second is morality.

EDIT: As me and Sam were watching the episode, both of us thought he would be a new companion. I think the show is crying out for a new companion.

Anyway I too loved both episodes so far.

As much as I liked the first episode, this one was a miles time better than that. (SPOILER)We saw a new character introduced and a relationship begin to grow with Clara, which is what some people in this thread was hoping to see. We saw the hope of there being a good Dalek and that hope being ripped away and the Doctor causing its hate to go into overdrive. The Star Trek references were a bit much, but a minor nitpick at best.

I'm enjoying the new Doctor and looking forward to finding out the secret behind Missy.

But yeah, the three Star Trek references I noticed were "into darkness", "resistance is futile", and "mind meld". Possible there were some more that I missed.

Did anyone else think Capalid looked like he wanted to say "Seriously?" when the Dalek cited the Borg line, but then remembered they were still filming so went back to scrip?

I've never seen Star Trek, so all those references just flew by me. :p

Star Trek: Into Darkness was the 2013 sequel to the 2009 reboot of Star Trek.

"Resistance is futile" is the Borg's catchphrase. The Borg are cyborgs (hence the name) and, well...the saying speaks for itself! If they were going to reference ST with this quote, would've made much more sense to use it in a Cybermen episode, though, since the Borg and Cybermen are pretty similar.

The mind meld is a Vulcan ability that allows the Vulcan to share minds, feelings, and thoughts with another living being (although Spock did use it on a robot, so maybe it's anything with intelligence!).

Like I said, there could've been more references that I missed. I've been joking about the Doctor Who: Into Darkness thing since they first released the season 8 trailer with him saying that. I'm honestly not sure if I'm more or less disappointed that it actually was a ST reference.

It occurred to me that yesterday was the first episode of Doctor Who without Matt Smith since the Tennant specials.

If Mr Pink joins then the Doctor's Daughter just needs to have a daughter to pick up and it will be the original entourage of Elderly Timelord + two teachers + Grandaughter.

Anyway that was all right as Dalek episodes go. I like the Clara development going on.

Not sure yet if it's only people who die for Capaldi's regeneration go to 'heaven' but if it's everyone who's ever died for/because of the Doctor shows up in heaven I hope we get a cameo from Lynda with a Y (from the end of the Eccleston series). Out of all the almost-companions, she's the one I wanted most to become a companion.

I liked this episode, probably my favourite of the Capaldi episodes so far. Silly, entertaining and a lot of fun.

This was actually an enjoyable episode for a filler.

Today's episode, not sure how I felt about it to be honest.

I loved it. One of the best episodes of Moffat's tenure as showrunner, I felt, if not the absolute best. This review highlights a number of things about it that I felt made it work really well. In a lot of ways this is a resolution of themes Moffat has been working with his entire career.

Earlier today before I wacthed the episode when we walked past a person muttering crazy loudly to himself my friend commented "typical crazy sydneyer" and I said "He's probably wondering why were all ignoring the invisible spirit companion that follow us around, maybe were the crazy ones"

(SPOILER) I liked when Clara was talking to Young Doctor, saying that he will come back to the barn and he will be afraid and they showed War Doctor and I was like ":o nice" I thought it was a very nice touch.

I have been enjoying these episodes of DW significantly more than I have been enjoying it for the past few years.

Don't know whether this is such low standards for the show, or whether it is legitimately good...

Clara really is the perfect companion for this Doctor. He's rough around the edges and takes charge, but she has no problem smacking him on the head or saying "sit!".

That was probably my favorite part of the whole episode. The cherry on top of an already fantastic story.

If I made a Top 10 list of Doctor Who episodes I enjoy, this would most likely be on it.

Tonight's episode didn't really impress me too much :/ I did enjoy the latest eyebrows comment though.

I liked it, but it was definitely a lesser episode than last week's episode, which felt like an instant classic.
