Throughout the store and parking lot, looters pushed carts and loaded trucks and vans alongside officers. One man said police directed him to Wal-Mart from Robert’s Grocery, where a similar scene was taking place. A crowd in the electronics section said one officer broke the glass DVD case so people wouldn’t cut themselves.
“The police got all the best stuff. They’re crookeder than us,” one man said.
Most officers, though, simply stood by powerless against the tide of law breakers.
One veteran officer said, “It’s like this everywhere in the city. This tiny number of cops can’t do anything about this. It’s wide open.”
At least one officer tried futilely to control a looter through shame.
“When they say take what you need, that doesn’t mean an f-ing TV,” the officer shouted to a looter. “This is a hurricane, not a free-for-all.”
Sandra Smith of Baton Rouge walked through the parking lot with a 12-pack of Bud Light under each arm. “I came down here to get my daughters,” she said, “but I can’t find them.”
The scene turned so chaotic at times that entrances were blocked by the press of people and shopping carts and traffic jams sprouted on surrounding streets.
Some groups organized themselves into assembly lines to more efficiently cart off goods.
Toni Williams, 25, packed her trunk with essential supplies, such as food and water, but said mass looting disgusted and frightened her.
“I didn’t feel safe. Some people are going overboard,” she said.
Inside the store, one woman was stocking up on make-up. She said she took comfort in watching police load up their own carts.
“It must be legal,” she said. “The police are here taking stuff, too.”

That is the worst and dumbest thing I have ever heard. People are now wasting thier martial law resources on stopping theives. Why are people like this? Of course they know how much more damage this will cause, but who cares - as long as I am ritch. I detest these theves immensly and hope they find the errors of thier ways, If not, then I wish em to hell. :mad:

Why not pillage the town? Hell, why stop them from pillaging the town? It's not like any of those stores will make any profit from those items anyway. I say to hell with it, let em' loot. They don't have anything left anymore, so why not let them take what they can? I'd do it, and I bet you all would too.
I don't like the idea of pillaging a town because it's so apathetic. People are dying and they're more concerned with getting stuff.
Katrina was awful. I'm going to make sure my family sends a check to help out the people affected by this, because it's the least we can do.
Stealing is stealing. I would not do, and I would not condone it. Sides the people who are stealing jsut end up screweing buisness and inthe long run themselves, as prices will be higher.
I would support a post katrina 'some bastages looted my stock and I will prolly never see a dime from my insurance company' tax A lot of the stuff that people are stealing is in perfect condition. The store would then be unable to sell it. Even if the insurance companies cover all the stolen goods, the insurance costs would have to go up. Then store prices would go up, and you didn't jsut steal from the store - you stole from teh pubic. All were victums as you were. Stealing from them is unexcusable.

Funny how people were bitching about the fact that the US wasn't doing enough to aid other countries (glares at Cloud No.9), but no one seems to care that no other country is lending us a hand.
Except Canada, who has announced a willingness to give whatever aid they can (specifically medical attention), to the people of New Orleans. I'd like to say "thank you" for their support in this time of crisis.
Amen there skyblade. I am glad that we do yet have friends whom are willing to help. Even the biggest bully on the block( :rolleyes2 ) needs a friend.
It is a humbling reminder though i must say that. Even the "bigest; most powerful" country is not as inept to disaster as some might think. Hopefully it will pull our eyes from being all over the world, and give some support to those Americans that will need it.

It seems like people in our own country don't even care, or maybe its just my area. I sure hope it is. They just continuously complain about gas prices and when you bring up the devastation the hurricane brought or the conditions the people there are living in right now they say things like, "Well, they had to time to get out." :mad2:
I've not talked to one person who even mentioned the hurricane, let alone express concern over it.

Levy's were made for Cat 3 and lower hurricanes.
Our army/Nat. Guard are (not all) over seas. 10,000 troops are not enough troops to hand the wide-spread destruction caused.
I imagine Bush goes on vacation sometime next week.
Up until some hours ago, I thought this was just another hurricane. But this one took out New Orleans, and the water is still going in, so it could be a complete destruction.
As far as the looters, I have nothing against them really. The people who are grabbing food and water and baby supplies are the smart ones. The ones carrying off TVs and stuff are just pitiful morons since they may have no place to go. What are they gonna do with that plasma screen on their back? plug it into a candle? Guess they can eat and drink TV too.
