I'm sure there is a pic of cloud from the game smiling. When they are going through the Nibelheim flashback in Kalm the caption is different. Rather than looking away and distant he is looking forward and has an optimistic smile on his face.
Don't quote me on this, I haven't played the game in ages. Check it out if you get the chance, it may be the smile you were looking for.
But I agree, I want to see one smile in AC.
That would be weird. But it's pretty certain he smiled in the game a few times, the graphics obviously couldn't show it but he laughed when teasing Aeris about joining Soldier, looks positively jubilent when winning a chocobo race etc.
