Since this one is hard I'm going to multi-guess. It's probably a spell over a person because of the Merton reference.
I'm going to guess Flare, Light of Judgment or Lore like L.4 Flare enemy, or Exploder? Otherwise this is really hard.

The riddle sounds like something to do with the Phantom Train. Perhaps the ghost ally that possesses your enemy for instant death to both? Is that at least the right direction?

the homonym bit has me stumped though

L.90 magic is the most likely as its the one where Meltdown can be used by Sketch/Control and not by Rage

The only thing i can think of is Purifier? I barely met her
Edit: Oh damn all this time I had homonymn confused with homophone, that threw me off, otherwise i wouldve looked through the bestiary for enemies instead of sitting here trying to pronounce everything in every way possible
And I didn't even think of the names of the esper's attacks. I did check the Lores without any luck. I didn't look at the Rage list though, as that sounded daunting.
