By sheer coincidence I also started a game of Crystal recently, I'm slightly ahead of you (just beat Chuck), though my game is nowhere near as entertaining as yours. I miss Mareep though :( Especially as I got Smoochum out of my egg and have no decent electric types.
Do you have a psychic pokemon at all? I might be wrong but I've not seen one at all yet. If their available, get a kadabra or even a drowsee or something.
