I'm supposed to meeting my two best friends saturday to go shooting. The three of us haven't been together in over three years, and have been best friends for something like 15 years. I'm still kinda bummed about having to watch the whole shebang late...
To be fair you probably won't be alone, as I always watch my ponies kind of late as well, so it can be the last thing I do on Saturday (and it's technically Sunday as I stay up past midnight on a Saturday), so I always kind of watch them late, but I may be slightly earlier for the double ponies.Quote:

Considering Lauren actually came up with the idea for the storyline before she left, I wonder how much of her original concept remained? I know Cadance wasn't meant to be an alicorn, but that's all I know. Either way, it was beautiful.
I just don't think they look right. If a legitimate version is made with bendy knees, I'd be sold.
My only dissapointments were the songs. The first two were kinda... Meh. The one at the reception was pretty awesome though. I am also definitely down for a livestream event too, I can only hope that I'm able to check in on this one. I'm moving to Korea the first week of may and it'll probably be a few weeks before I get settled in and life gets back to normal.

The only thing I really liked was scratch and the second song.
Shining Armor could be his entire first name, but it seems to me that either the ponies don't have full names (as Proto pointed out) or they just work differently to them than they do to us. "Sparkle" really does seem like a last name because she is sometimes just called "Twilight" giving the impression that, that is her first name. However, if you check out the first generation (or if you don't want to, just do some research on Lauren when she was making Friendship is Magic) you will know why "Sparkle" is sometimes omitted.
Shame you didn't like the episode Hypo, but each to their own. :)

I do enjoy the finale, but on a whole there was a lot of issues with it. However, there are so many little things throught, much like the Murder Mystery episode, that I just adored.
On a whole kind of a lack luster way to end a season.
Top 3 episodes? Indeed.
So, which of the two seasons would you say had the superior season finale? I would say Season 2 for the following reasons;
1. It felt more like a finale.
2. It had a more engaging storyline.
3. It was a really "awww" and romantic episode.
4. There was actually a threat to the ponies, and possibly Equestria itself, so there was more of an urgency for the mane six to succeed, where as in Season 1 it was just a case of "I've planned this day for so long, and now everything's going wrong". I liked it, but it fealt less of a finale.
The only thing that made Best Night Ever feel like a finale, is ironically the only thing that I thought that episode did better than A Canterlot Wedding; it foreshadowed itself - in Season 1, the ponies were talking about the gala throughout the season, so that made it feel like a finale, but nothing else did.
Season 1 had the way better finale.
There is a few big problems I had with this finale.
The biggeset is the finish. Its ending had next to nothing to do with any of our main six characters, and instead falls fully on two characters we have barely had a chance to get to know. I mean the time we've had with Cadence wasn't even half an episode.
Then there is the issue of the blatently evil Cadence. How the hell did anyone NOT figure this out? The fake clearly didn't do all that much research, she didn't even realize Twilight was Shining's sister.
You could make the argument that perhaps she was using her magic to do so, but why didn't she just do it to Twilight? If it's because of twilights skill in magic it may not have worked on her, then how would it have fooled Celestia?
I'm not bothered by the Idea of the Shapechangers being here to feed on the inhabitants, but more the plan is a bit fuzzy. First off, did the fake get here before or after the barrier was put up? It seems her goal was to go after SA specifically in order to take down the barrier, but then how did she get in to begin with?
And then there was the actual fight with the Changelings, which was great and fun, but ended up not mattering in the slightest.
And I'm bothered by the introduction of Shining too. Not the character or the fact he exists mind you, but it was baddly handled. Twilight was so pissed about this not being told he was getting married? Really? This is a guy who has not come to see her ANY of the times they've been in Canterlot, and the guy she cares SO MUCH about she hasn't mentioned him once in the entirety of these two seasons?
And I'm boggled by thier refusal to get Luna involved in the story. They had the perfect opportunity to do so. That's not really a major complaint, just me wondering what went through their head.
I disagree with you Seifer, because these issues make this finale hard to be engaging for me. All the characters I know and love from the show had little to nothing to do with anything. The only relevant thing they did the whole time was Twilight saving Cadence. That was the extent of our shows main characters relevance.
Compare that to the Season 1 finale. That finale, as you said, it 'foreshadowed itself'. That's probably a bad word to use, as FOreshadowing is used to hint at something that was going to happen, where as we all knew the Canterlot thing was going to happen. :p
Season 1's Finale had a lot of build up, I think is the better word. Everyone involved in it was characters we had connections with, not two new people we have no connection with.
I will say the jokes tend to be spot on in this episode though. And like the mystery episode, there is a rediculous amount of small details that I loved, and just well done scenes. The many Rarity getting overly excited scenes were wonderful, Fluttershy and Pinkie during the Changling battle were hilarious, and one of my favorites was during the wedding when Apple Jack slipped back on the hat when Rarity was sobbing. XD
And I'll note I hated Twilight and Fluttershy's hair at the end. AJ and RD were pretty cool, and I loved how Rarity's was the same as always.
So as I said, good episode on a whole, but there was to much I felt dragged it down to be satisfying as a Finale.
Question, why the heck did the queen TELL everyone in advance she was gonna do this, if she hadn't none of this would have happened.

There are a few explanations I could come up with, but this isn't really based off anything in the episode, and is pure speculation based on next to nothing.

Also you forgot to mention the four songs in the finale that make up for the lack of songs in the second half of the season.
I wouldn't expect her to study all of her history, but at least a little bit of it. Knowing he has a sister likely to show up is ever so slightly important. :p

In "This Day Aria", Queen Chrysalis ends her verses in a deceptive cadence and Cadence ends hers in an authentic cadence.

Not quite. I think the deceptive cadence is in the BBBFF song where all but the last periods ends on an authentic cadence with the final one landing on a deceptive cadence and then Twilight doing a little lick from the theme song at the end.
This Day Aria is really interesting though. I've been trying to figure it out for a while and I just don't have all of the tools to do so. I recognize the scale structure as Phrygian dominant (Freygish) but don't know enough about constructing progressions in that mode.
The Intro "Verse" part at the beginning centers around Db (major) rocking mostly to a flat minor seventh (which I guess would be diatonic in Phrygian dominant except for the raised 5th). The two contrasting "chorus" parts center around the Ab (the dominant of Db), but make more sense when viewed in Db minor.
Chrysalis
The progression is Ab, Dbm, Gbm6, Dbm etc. If you think of it in Db that comes to V-i-iv-i. The oddest part is the first chord of the last phrase... an A (or probably more likely B double-flat). It seems to work as the bVI resolving to V then i.
A deceptive cadence would be something like V-vi or maybe V-ii, but that doesn't happen.
Cadance
The first two 4 bar sets are the exact same as above.
But THEN it gets really interesting.
We get a progression in Db major instead of minor and instead of centering on the dominant we center on tonic. Db Ab/C Bbm7 Fm. So in Db major that's I-V-vi-iii. Aside from the V chord being in first inversion, this is the Pachelbel progression that's so overused... but more importantly, Canon in D is used heavily in weddings (this progression happens while Cadance is leaning against the cart). It can't be an accident if you listen to the moving parts that so closely mimic the original.
The final four bars of this section are just a follow up to that line with Ebm7 (ii7), Bbm (vi), Gb(IV), Db(I). There's a lot of extra stuff on that last chord, but it's still clearly the I chord. Not deceptive... actually it's not authentic either. It's plagal (the amen cadence).
The little 4 bar interlude (as they fly through the air) is awesome too. Db, F/C, D/F#, D. It has a little neapolitan chord action going on after a borrowed bit. I-bIV-N-N. The first neapolitan is in first inversion (as per usual) and then resolves to root before the entire chord takes a parallel step down to Db to reprise the Verse section as a sort of outro.
The big difference is that instead of Am-Db as it was the first time, it seems we step completely out of Db, in fact it's probably a series of secondary functions. Em7, F#, Bm. In the key of B minor it makes sense as a plain iv7-V-i cadence, but if we look at it next to Db we think of it as a iv7/vi-V/vi-i.
While not a classically deceptive cadence (where you feel the dominant of your key leading to I and are interrupted by a sudden move to vi or ii or something) it basically uses a series of a chords, secondary subdominant and dominant to cadence the entire piece on B, which is the vi of the main key.
This thing was masterfully crafted and despite not having as much spunk and catchiness as Winter Wrap-Up and Smile, Smile, Smile, it may be one of my favorites. My wife was also hugely impressed with it. I've watched it a dozen times and still almost lose it when Cadance leans against the cart. Right before, Twilight looks afraid, then Cadance rushes in with desperation, Twilight looks shocked, Cadance streams with tears as Pachelbel's Canon rings over and she talks about her love for Shining Armor, Twilight sees her resolve and her pupils respond as she suddenly realizes the depth of Cadances devotion and helps her free the cart.
Oh god... that part is so overwhelming... and the neapolitan chord standing out starkly as they soar over the abyss right before Cadance lets out her wings.
Okay... I'm gonna go now.
NOTE: The hardest part about writing this post was typing cadence and Cadance differently.

As much as I loved this episode, for the most part I actually agree to this. I did like how Shining Armor and Cadance were used, and I actually didn't mind them saving the day with their love because I thought that was beautiful. However, it would have been better to have the mane six too.Quote:

What I think would have been better, is if they'd kept the ending where Shining and Cadance's love is used to defeat the villain, but it doesn't work to its fullest - the changing thing is too strong, after all she's done, and the mane six use their elements to back the love up. That would actually make this beautiful scene even more heart warming, as it would emphasize the stong link between friendship and love (i.e. love needs friendship to be at full strength, if you catch my meaning.)
I'll give you the Celestia/Twilight thing at least for now. I think she probably did use her magic on the others, as we saw her use it on Shining. There is a chance that she managed to fool Celestia with the whole "My wedding is too stressful, so I may be a bitch sometimes", but it still sounds dubious. You're probably right here.Quote:

I think what Proto said. Also, there's a chance the fight mattered in that the minions could have backed up the Queen, but from the way the "Power of Love" thing happened you may be right. Hence more need for my version.Quote:

For the first part, I can possibly guess that the reason he was never around was because he was part of the Royal Guards and wouldn't be allowed to socialise with anyone, though I could be wrong. The fact that, Twilight knows Celestia makes this seem like a poor excuse though, but it's up there with other coninuity errors this show has produced.Quote:

I get your problem with Twilight not mentioning Shining before now, especially after hearing a song about how close they were when they were younger. It didn't bother me that much that we'd never heard that Twilight had a brother before now, as a lot of shows introduce family members without an prior refferences to them, annoying, I grant you, but that's how it works in writing. You probably didn't notice this, seeing as you hate the CMC, but there was never at any point even the slightest indication that Rarity had a sister either, and then all of a sudden "boom" - there she was. I would have forgiven them more if they had at least covered their tracks with Shining Armor though, like contained a piece of dialogue in which Twilight mentions that they usually write to each other or something, it's just we don't see it. It would be a passable cover up.
I do wonder though, if Lauren knew when she created Shining that he was going to be Twilight's brother? Lauren created both Shining Armor and Cadance, as well as the basis for the storyline before she left the show, but certain things were changed in her absense (Cadance wasn't an alicorn originally), so that could account for it too.
This actually one of the complaints I already had. The more I think of it, the more I think they included Luna purely because they knew that the fans wanted to see her again, but since they had no purpose for her they didn't use her. It was like they were saying "Okay bronies, we included Luna, now shut up about her already!"Quote:

Don't bother if he doesn't want to watch. Unless he has an open mind and wouldn't mind watching a single episode. If that's the case, try watching any of the two-parters. I'd recommend the opening episodes of Season 2. If you manage to finish the first episode and he wants to check out the following episode, you successfully changed his mind about ponies and made him one step closer to bronyhood.

Drawn Together is a cool show. I've seen a couple episodes of that. Pretty crude humor, but that's expected from a cartoon that premiers on Comedy Central. I think he might enjoy MLP if he can look past the "pony cuteness". Good luck.

This is going to be both on topic and off topic at the same time, but could any of you please put my mind at rest? My love of Friendship is Magic coupled with the fact I kept remembering that one tiny event from the first Generation of My Little Pony that I saw as a kid (which I may never have even remembered had Friendship is Magic not inspired me to think back to whether I'd have liked either FIM ponies, or even the older ponies as kid) have lead me to finding out as much as I can about the previous generations as I can.
While doing so, I saw an episode with this song towards the end. Now, I know for a fact that I only saw the start of a completely different episode as a kid, and that's it. Between then and Friendship is Magic I was under the delusion that as a boy, I should hate ponies, so I never saw this episode as a kid. So how come it feels like I've heard the song before?!
Is this song used in something else other than My Little Pony? Or is this song based on another song as homage, the same way Art of the Dress is based on another song? Bronies and Pegasisters of EoFF, I'd appreciate you setting me straight on this one.

I listened and it didn't really sound like anything I've heard recently. In fact, having that sugary-sweet melody interrupted by that strange modal sounding v-bVII-I gave it a very 80s vibe. The bVII-I progression by itself isn't that dd. You can hear it in one of the Lord of the Rings themes though I'm not sure if it's functioning the same way there.
Having watched most of FiM eps 2-3 times, I don't really remember anything from this song sticking out to me in any of those. It's all standard fare except for that one lick and I'm pretty sure that strange modal dive would've caught my ear at some point if it had shown up in FiM, but I might just missed it. Outside of that, it might just be that you're hearing other bits that are familiar because the rest of the song is pretty cookie-cutter in terms pop or folk music.

I hesitate to post this, as it is bad juju to speak it. Right now, last i checked we were only guaranteed 13 more episodes (meeting the bare minimum for syndication.) Its still open, but not guaranteed, to extend for more.
That said, seeing the rolling freight train of love, friendship and flying wads of fanboy cash, hasbro would be utterly retarded not to continue this show. Its almost inconcievable that they would drop something with this rabid a fanbase. I must note however, they've totally ignored the call for plushies and the shocking prices show accurate customs, plushies and background pony recolors have been going for on ebay while continuing to pump "glimmer shine star berry" random toys onto the market. This seems ridiculously stupid, as putting out a Lyra or Bon Bon would attract just as many little girls who just wanted a pony as a random recolor would, but it would attract FAR more bronies to the register. Why cut half the market? Why the hideous plush baby spikes and mutant pinkies? Why pink celestia? Why no nightmare moon/luna?
Long story short, my logic says the guys in charge would have to be brain dead to stop the show 13 eps into season 3. My cynicism tells me to look at the mind boggling oversights already and realize its a definite possibility they're that dumb.

I already suspected it would happen, but recent events have made it so; Guys this FFVI/Friendship is Magic game is awesome. I really love how it's been done, and the fact that FIM inspires it's fans to do such creative things is one of the things that makes me love this fandom so much.
Another thing that makes me love this fandom is how kind and warm it is to its members. I recently typed a heartfelt comment on a YouTube video which makes me feel really emotional, and I had been putting off doing so for ages. The bronies were so nice about it, and told me that I had nothing to be ashamed of. I'm so honored if I am to be considered part of this fandom. Thank you, everyone. I'm so pleased to have found you. :)

So Camp Humphreys, South Korea is about to get a face full of love and tolerance. I somehow got roped into taking the swimming leg of a Team Triathlon by a buddy of mine. My longtime buddy, while not a Brony himself, decided if we were going to do this we should have a recognizable team name. Most people only use their unit designation (501st Military Intelligence Team 3, etc.) and upon checking the signup list after he had written our names down, I noticed he had signed us up as 4-2 ATTACK, Team Brony. We're getting three jerseys made up for our team this weekend with cutie marks on them. I consider this quite awesome, and will do my damnedest to win this thing for Brony pride. Jeff (biking) is also working his ass off, because he thinks it would be hilarious to beat several teams of gung-ho soldiers while rocking ponies. Our third team member is apparently clueless. Jeff finds this hilarious as well and has made me promise to not tell him, so we can blindside him the morning of the event.
Sounds great. Make sure and tell us the results

Also, to anyone out there who hasn't played Pony Fantasy VI yet, but wants to, here's some advice; Do not read the page on what pony is playing what character. It's so much more fun finding out for yourself!
I admitidly did look, but I have forgotten most of it because I had to go visit family before I could play it.
I am currently in the process of compiling a list of all the allusions towards previous generations of My Little Pony that show up in FIM. I'm having a lot of fun doing it, but if you notice anything I may have missed feel free to tell me. The list is not finished at all and I have a lot more to add, but I haven't had much time to work on it.

Actually you can hear one of the jock ponies call her Derpy in the fourth episode, and Doctor Whooves makes a comment about how cute it sounds, but he sticks with Ditzy.

I'm not much of a brony at all. I lost interest in the show sometime during season 2 when the "hurr-hurr I'm not really supposed to like this but I actually kinda do so that's well funneh" appeal of it wore off and I realised I wasn't watching anything special. That and Derpy fanservice.
But I wish to say: bronies don't get on my nerves very much. It can be a bit annoying to go somewhere and see ponies posted all over it, but honestly? It's the hardcore haters of this franchise that really get on my nerves... because they're the ones who accidentally shove My Little Pony down my throat in a big way. Ironic really.

I haven't been keeping up with this thread so I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet. Apparently Hasbro paraded some collectibles at Comic-con.
