I'd guess Squall's ring but the whole immaterial thing wouldn't make much sense >.o

If "he" is Griever, then what is the riddle asking? Is the answer the question? My next guess would be Rinoa, because she asks Squall to name the ring.

Not Rinoa.

The answer isn't Griever, but about something related to him.

Going for the obvious I know but Ultimecia?

Not Ultimecia.

Lion?

The Ring, Squall, Rinoa and Ultimecia are the only other ones I can think that relate to Griever

perhaps the final battle against griever?

HintIt's something you encounter at the same time as Griever.

When you use Lion heart or a move that kills Greiver in 1 hit then he only uses Shockwave Pulsar once before dying.
