Concerning the article, I actually had it the other way around when it comes to romances. When I was a boy, I had no girlfriend, because every girl I got closer to started developing feelings for me and I didn't want anyone feel hurt, so I just spent more time with the girls. As a girl, I had three boyfriends. Minako was a player.

I find the very idea of cheating repulsive. Perhaps it's just easier to role play someone you're not when you play the opposite gender.

The female links are cool in that you can go either lovers or friend route in them (though Akihiko is pretty risky in that regard). In P4 you can only play as a guy, but that system stays. The P3 boy HAD TO romance a girl to max the link.
