Cid is the best, Vincent following after him. I also Liked Red XIII and Reno (Rufus was pretty cool, too).
Aeris, Cloud, and Barret were the worst characters in the game though =/
Especially Cloud.

I hate Aeris,she is just so useless,and I have come to the conclusion that the Destruction of Midgar was her fault.Yeah Sephy summoned meteor,but then she summoned Holy and it had the exact opposite effect that it was supposed to.Then she tried to cover her ass and try to save the day with the life stream.
