You can either pay real money to get Linden Dollars or you can do odd jobs/gamble to win some money. Also, you can't own real estate and partake in some of the fancier functions unless you upgrade to a pay account from a free one.

My Second Life is not working anymore and crashes on that loading screen. I am afraid I cannot join this Spira party. :(
