The first line is literal.
The murals painted on the walls in the room you find the Black Materia in, inside the Temple of the Ancients?
Line one doesn't refer to actual heiroglyphs--just something like heiroglyphs. You've got the right idea though.
Bonus hint, the answer has nothing to do with any of the Ancients.
Is it the Combat Square where the floor is inscribed with something like: 'The Brave do not Fear the Grave'?
The tattoos on the failed Sephy clones? It's a little out of the box, but it can apply really well.
Neither of those.
Repost:
Like heiroglyphs from old Egyptian days,
the "teller" is gone but the story stays:
Pharaohs to heaven must pay a great fare
with riches they often postmortemly wear.
Or, if that reading is quite incorrect,
and the item in question was meant to protect,
well clearly the wearer neglected to stay,
so perhaps we conclude 'twas a curse either way.
Hints (updated):
-the first line is literal but does not refer to actual heiroglyphs--only something like them
-nothing to do with the main plotline
Guesses:
murals in the black materia room
white materia
combat square floor
reunion tattoos
Anything to do with the Black Materia?
Edit: Gahh, posted a bit too late for that.
How about the four hidden special Materia which can only be obtained with a Chocobo?
Nope, but if you give a bit of the reasoning behind the guess, I can give a hint to steer a bit in the right direction!
The four Materia (Knights of the Round, Quadra Magic, HP <-> MP, and Mime (or is that Mimic)) I am speaking are similar to hieroglyphs.... At least in some respect.... Or I'm just being a doofus/dimwit.
I guess a better question would be: Is it part of the background or something the player can pick up?
Part of the background. :)
Bonus hint (I'm trying to keep this moving along): by "like heiroglyphs" I mean "the answer's in a picture".
I think I remember some writing on the walls in the Crashed Gelnika. Anything to do with that?
Nope, the answer is in an actual picture. There are words with it, but they're not important--what matters is the picture itself.
Bonus hint, the answer is on the first continent.
The Loveless posters?
Nope...there are a couple hints in the riddle as to what you should be looking for in the picture.
turtle paradise?
"Nope, the answer is in an actual picture. There are words with it, but they're not important--what matters is the picture itself.
Bonus hint, the answer is on the first continent."
I'm guessing you missed that post by me. :) Turtle paradise posters do not have a picture--and even if they did, the text is what matters on those.
The picture in the Inn in Nebilheim?
No, Nibelheim isn't on the first continent...
YES... oh wait... NVM I've played it too many times it's all a big blur. I was thinking first disk xDD
Somewhere in Midgar?
Better question: Is it the player's POV? Or the character's POV?
Repost (with updated hints):

-the answer is in a picture, part of the background in the game
-on the first continent but not in Midgar
-the answer/picture has nothing to do with the plotline
I'd say try to ascertain what the riddle is trying to talk about, even if you don't know where to find it. Lines 4, 6, and 7 are pretty key.
Well if I have this correct Other than Midgar there is Kalm, Chocobo Farm, Fort Condor, and Junon left. I'm doubting it's at the Chocobo farm. The hint "the answer/picture has nothing to do with the plotline" makes me want to say it's in Fort Condor because that place is optional, but I don't recall anything that would fit the riddle there. Which leads me to believe it's in one of the houses at Kalm, and that's all I've got so far....
Mithril Caves are also on 1st continent, and depending on the way you look at it, Old Nibelheim and Old Mount Nibel could be considered on the 1st continent.
meteor
An armor of some sort? No, I think it's something related to armor. And I have a hunch that it is something worn after death.
Meteor relates to the plotline, and isn't referred to on the first continent at all.
K I'll specify: the picture is something created by an NPC in the game.
It does have something to do with an item worn after death--in the picture.
Mmm, that leaves locations with a population, such as Kalm, to be the city or town which the answer is in. I wonder if the NPC and the picture in question can be viewed before or after Aeris dies.....
I vaguely recall a picture of dogtags in Junon, I think. Could that possibly be it?
Nope, not dogtags. The thing in the picture is clearly dead but still wearing the item.
I really think BG should take a crack at this... heh heh heh...
Is it the model of Midgar in the glass pyramid in the Kalm store?
Nope, as mentioned (though not said quite so explicitly until now) the (in-game, two dimensional) picture is of a clearly dead person, still wearing some sort of item--and the item could be construed (as far as we know from the picture) as either decorative, or protective.
This is the sum total of the information that could be gleaned from the riddle itself.
Plus, there's a specific reason why you ought to know the answer. I wasn't talking necessarily about skill as a guesser (though of course you're a good one)--I mean to say: I know for a fact you have seen the picture. :)
Doubt is armor, a ribbon perhaps - no that not it either.... Doubt is materia..... Have a good reason to doubt Zack (when would you see that picture anyway?)....
Hmm, I'm a bit lost. Maybe water of some sort *looks puzzled*
The item in the picture is not an item that any of the characters can wear. It's just in the picture. Sorry if that was implied, my bad.
Hint: the answer is found in Junon proper.
Sneaky devil. :radred:
It's the accessory pendant worn by the skull with the sword through its head mentioned in the previous riddle.
Yep. I wanted to illustrate that there's so much potential for riddles that the same answer (pretty much) could be riddled about in totally different ways.
Also, yeah, with the joke-making. :)
Oh, wow! No wonder I was a bit lost, haven't played the game in a while.
So is this really food?
Take my slice, please
At least it can help
With the cooking part
Seems to be either an enemy or an item.... Maybe the Ceasar monster - looks like Ceaser (as in the salad dressing). Or am I off course?
Are we still allowed to post logic help without guessing? I have ideas but no guess.
"slice" could be pie, pizza, OH! Hmmmmmmmm.....Barret referred to the upper sectors of Midgar as that "$^%@! floating pizza". Slice could refer to a sector, then. But nobody ever offers anybody else a sector of Midgar, ha. could refer to reactors, one per slice, and they work together to feed the sister ray which "cooks" stuff.
I don't actually think that's it. I think I'm way off with where I went with that...but it's a line of thought.
slice could also refer to the action of slicing.
I have this vague idea that it's about an NPC giving you something that they find useless. ...I don't think I've said anything here that obligates you as a riddler to respond. Just throwing ideas out there.
Also your riddles sound like four-line haiku. hahah
Might it be the Hedgehog Pie? The reasoning should be fairly obvious, but it does use Fire which could be what the second half refers to.
Yep. Your go. :)
Would-be small scale vandalism
At times has large scale impact
Black pawn attacks not black king
But may abet the white foray
Would-be small scale vandalism - uh, graffiti maybe
At times has large scale impact - some graffiti has a large impact
Black pawn attacks not black king - something related to chess? Or movement?
But may abet the white foray - Again the white foray could be linked to chess. But what is a foray?
Vandalism does not refer to graffiti. A foray would be an attack or raid in this context.
AVALANCHE? theres a black dude heading it up, but the Man in the Black Cape is the one that kills Prez Shinra
Not AVALANCHE. You may want to think more metaphorically about black and white.
Anything to do with good & evil? As in Cetra vs. Jenova?
Yes, white and black refers to good and evil in a sense. Not Cetra vs. Jenova, though. Nothing so absolute.
I'm guessing this is an action of small resistance against Shin-Ra, but for the life of me I can't figure out who it might be.
You're definitely on the right track!
Is it Jenova when you raid Shinra HQ in disk 1?
Would-be small scale vandalism - When she breaks out she just kills some random people
At times has large scale impact - But then kills President Shinra
Black pawn attacks not black king - She's being controlled by Sephiroth (pawn), but wouldn't attack him...I guess lol
But may abet the white foray - Opens the door when you get captured by Shinra
I don't usually like trying to solve these, because I hate coming up with my own but I got drawn into this one. On the chance I'm right, someone else kindly take my turn.
I'm afraid it's not Jenova, but very nice reasoning. Keep thinking along those lines, though the small-scale vandalism is much smaller - almost meaningless in itself.
Maybe the alarm when trying to get the Ultimate materia in the underwater sub area in Junon? I think it might have something to do with those materia, because that was ShinRa (pawn) striking at the king (Sephie).
I'm guessing it's one of those optional small textbox non-essential options you can make cloud do, like getting picked for Don Corneo, but then to do with ShinRa.
It does have to do with ShinRa. It's not what you said, though. It's part of the main storyline and not optional.
blood graffetti when on sephiroth trail?
red 13 attacking Aeris and then when barret breaks the barrier, red 13 attacking hojo
Neither of those.
cosmo canyon.
Not Cosmo Canyon.
are you sure its not cosmo canyon?
fine.
Weapon
Pretty sure, yes! It's not Weapon, either.
I'm going to give it another shot, since I just got past this point in my replay of the game and I think I can link the riddle to it. It's a bit more small scale.
Is it Mayor Domino when you're infiltrating Shinra HQ?
Would-be small scale vandalism - Some books in the library are mixed up.
At times has large scale impact - Holds the key to the password that you have to give the mayor.
Black pawn attacks not black king - He's just a figurehead (pawn) for Shinra (King). He doesn't directly attack them, but...
But may abet the white foray - He does give you the keycard to get further into the HQ.
Again, on the chance I am right someone else can take my go. It's just this riddle is driving me nuts.
Yes, very good! That's completely right. The mayor's small scale vandalism of misplacing books has a larger scale impact when it provides the key for Cloud and company to pass and do some serious damage.
I take it, Crop, that you like to guess more the create riddles?
If that's is the case...... Here's mine.
Doth not let thee see,
Only blood can get to me.
What you will find inside,
Is a stone of black.
But be prepared to sacrifice,
Something of value....
Temple of the Ancients?
Yep! I can't understand why I've used those first two lines....
Near one's home
I have a rare sharp item,
Yet if you try to find me
You have to be precise.
And if you do find me,
don't bring the hards.
The Vlakrados?
Nope.
Bloatfloat? Found on Mt. Corel, uses Spiky Hell when killed and drops Soft.
Nope. You're close, though.
Is it the Cokatolis you fight if you steal the Phoenix Downs from its nest?
Nope.
Is hards referring to liquer or the spell Break (or something similar)?
The line refers to an item.
Ah, okay.
I'm pretty sure it refers to Soft, the antipetrification item.
Basilisks?
Are there Basilisks in FF7? I don't think so.
Desert Rose from Ruby Weapon?
Actually they're known as Bagrisks (and appear near Cosmo Canyon with low leveled party) but they can drop Vagrisk Claws. I'm not sure which name is preferable, but they're clearly meant to be basilisks.
At any rate, it's clearly not them. I'm running out of pertrification related/Soft dropping monsters.
I feel like theur is an item called pointer or something that casts toad on the enamy and is dropped in fights with the toads and lizard things
Nope.
so its a monster? or is it yuffie?
Whoa, I completely missed BG-57's last post! Sorry about that.....
It is the Bagrisks.
Near one's home Cosmo Canyon, Nanaki's home.
I have a rare sharp item, The Vagrysk Claw, only obtainable here and through CMD GH.
Yet if you try to find me
You have to be precise. They only appear on very few places, many people don't know they exist.
And if you do find me,
don't bring the hards. Refers to "Soft" - They petrify your characters.
Just as well. I was out of guesses after that. :p
You must do this once
But there is no upper limit
Two pathways to follow
But one is quickly closed
Chocobo racing?
stairway in shinra building.
No to both.
temple of ancients? im reminded of the clock room
Nope.
snowboarding
No.
Walking through the park in Sector 5?
Not that.
you are like the riddle king
Thanks. I do give hints, so hopefully it's not impossible.
is it refering the the point in the northern crater where, your split the party, and the can only take one of two paths?
alternately is it omnislash, you must use it against sepheroth, but if you buy it in GS you can use is as welten as you want?
Please, only one guess at a time.
For what it's worth, it's neither.
hmmm...gaea cliffs? when cloud must keep his temperature up :)
Nope.
Repost:

I know I know...one guess at the time, but could it be battle arena? You must do it once. And if i remember correctly, there is normal and hard mode, but only for a short time :p
battle zone?
Snowboarding minigame?
uh.... wall market
?
Not Wall Market.
Junon?
Is it the battles at Fort Condor? I'm trying to think of what else you're forced to do once... Fort Condor has an upper limit though, so perhaps not.
The first fight at Fort Condor is not mandatory, you just just walk by it without ever entering the place once.
I think the answer may be when you go through the forest that requires the Lunar harp, you only have to go through it once when you go through it the first time, but you can go through it many times after that if you so choose to do so.
You have to go to Fort Condor during the Huge Materia Quest.
On Topic: Is it Mythril?
uh... the ....
boat ride?
Not the boat ride.
Repost:

uh.... the whole thing with how you can go to the prison once, but after the airship is gained, you lose the ability to enter MUSHROOM CARNIVAL (meh, I like that name better) from the prison and can only go from Corel
invites BG to xii riddles, where'd he go
Quickly closed? That trows me off, I'm not certain if it is quickly closed soon after you arrive there or shortly after you leave...
Catastrophe? The first two lines could refer to digging in Bone Village, and you can either get Catastrophe in Corel or through digging. If you fail to save N. Corel you can only get it through digging.
Not Corel Prison.
I'll take a look, but I'm not as familiar with XII as I am with VII and VIII. :greenie:
HintThe quickly closed path is plot related.
Not Catastrophe.
approaching teh icicle inn?
Nope.
It's Barret's final Limit Break.
oh..
I guess ultima
Not Ultima.
Is it related to going back to Shinra headquarters at the return to Midgar?
Nope.

decent into northern cave?
Running around in the Midgar subway system?
hes beat me
Would you like a hint?
Omnislash?
Not Omnislash.
I would love a hint
HintThe plot related pathway is connected to a specific character, the other pathway to a specific location.
does it have anything to do with don corneo?
Could it be Da Chao mountain?
It's neither.
Wutai Continent?
It's not Nibelheim, is it? You visit it during the flashback, which would be the pathway closed, but can also visit it as often as you like during the game.
Neither.
Repost:

I WILL SOLVE DIS RIDDLE IF I HAV TO PLAY 7 AGAIN
Hey BG, can you post the hints and known incorrect guesses?
How about a new hint instead?
HintIt's not a minigame, but it can be found near many of them.
that imediatly makes me think of golden-whatever, but i thought it wasnt related? its not the gondola ride is it?
my thoughts flash to when you first arrive in golden saucer. youre incited to follow barret down one particular tunnel, but can choose instead to go to the speed square to chat with Dio, and *then* go to the wonder square. if you pass going to speed first, youre never able to chat with Dio about Sephy.
its not the play is it... no wait, that only happens once.... OOH the hotel!
Sorry, no.
boo hoo.... um is it.... the elevator?
Entering the Gold Saucer and paying either 3000 or 30000?
talking to dio
Chocobo racing?
thats already been asked hasnt it
Repost:

Talking to Vincent?
Its kind of making me think of the date thing, but there is a limit to that and there are three results possible....
the gold saucer itself, you have to go there once and there are two pathways into the place, but one quickly becomes closed
... no I take that back
is it the prison, you must go there once, there are two ways to get there, and one becomes permenantly closed quickly, but as long as you have the buggy you can still get there as many times as you want
the play you participate in
Still no.
It hasn't got anything to do with Cosmo Canyon, does it? You can go UP to the observatory, or DOWN into the Cave of the Gi, but that path is quickly closed (and you must go to both at least once).
Minibattles at Fort Condor?
No, they happen in Gold Saucer.
Getting your fortune read?
You must get it done by Cait Sith, and you can always go to the crystal fortune for more.
Correct! :D
Your go.
Finally! Such a duh answer...
WOW, that was a good one!
:shobon:
I have four of the strongest to use
Hidden within my small being.
Only found through charity, and
Only three others affect people like me.
Grangalan? The little stackable dolls outside of Costa Del Sol.
Learning Level 4 Suicide?
Nope.
Fort Condor Battles?
Learning Chocobuckle?
It's been awhile since I've tried this, but I'm gonna say the Contain materia. I don't get the last line, but it seems to fit the rest.
:D Woot! I still got it.
Unfortunately I don't have a a riddle, so it's up for grabs.
Quick, someone get one up before BG! lol
Hey! :p
I'll take then :p
In the Beginning
There was a man of crimson
Borne of a Netherlands doctor
Yeah... I dunno how this will go.
vincent was sephiroths father, but hojo made both of them what they are
thats my answer
Actually Hojo knowked her up then put jenova cells in it. So Hojo is Sephy's father. But I agree hojo did make Vincent what he is now. Bu I agree with your answer of Vincent
Incorrect, but thinking along the right track.
Genesis Rhapsodos, borne of Dr. Hollander .
Also, that's FF:CC, not FF7. And in that context it's "borne from a Dutch doctor."
Didn't realise Compilation wasn't allowed, my bad. And yeah, bad terminology, wasn't sure. Just went with first instinct.
You're up dude.
I think as long as you give the name of which one its from, using spinoffs would be fine, except for before crisis, but maybe not, in which case someone make a cc riddle thread
Long waves shows us the need,
Thundering metal shows us the way.
A nice gesture,
Overdone.
Dolphin jumping?
Nein
The fight with Emerald Weapon?
Nope
Hint: Disc 1.
trip across the ocean?
njet
the train tracks that lead to corel
Climbing the Shinra HQ's Endless Staircase?
Nope and nope.
Hint 2: It does indeed involve trains.
Is long waves refering to the color red?
Is it the secuirty scans on the trains?
jesse making the "special ID" card for cloud? that seems to be the overdone gesture
Ding! ding! Khimbar has it.
Although the hardest clue was found out by BG, no big surprise there. The trains really gave it away, I guess.
