Last movie you watched and your critique of it

Update on Beasts of the Southern Wild: I liked it. I liked seeing the difference of the culture from the life most of us know. Hushpuppy was good, but she was no Tatum O'Neal. I liked the film as I was watching it, but after it was over I didn't feel like it left any significant impact on me. Rantz and I had kindof different feelings about the endings, though, and it was neat to compare those thoughts. 7/10

Which brings me to The Five Year Engagement. I liked this one a bit more than the film mentioned above. My indie film side is kicking my general romantic comedy side for saying that, but I just felt like I could relate more to this film and it made me squee and feel things and I just really liked it a lot. 8/10

When In Rome: Funny movie with Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel about a girl who picks out some coins from the fountain of love in Rome, and that makes those men fall in love with her. I like to watch easy-going films like this on a Friday night to help me get ready for bed, I was pleasantly surprised by this. I like Kristen Bell, and thought she was good in this, there were also some funny side characters played by Danny DeVito, Jon Heder and Dax Shepard (who is married to Kristen irl). What I didn't like about it was this stupid whole story based around the fact that Beth (Bell) is a career woman so needs a man who she loves more than her career. I think a lot of movies these days have that whole thing and I find it a bit tiresome and overdone. I'd give this movie a 6/10 and I'd probably watch it again.

You Again: Another Kristen Bell I film I watched a few weeks ago about a girl whose brother is marrying her high school bully. This had a great cast; Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver, Kristen Chenoweth and Betty White. I really liked it up until it just started getting a bit silly, I think the stars of the movie were Curtis and Weaver - they were just brilliant together :lol: I'd give this 7/10

Two movies this time, both of these are a first time seeing them.

Resevior Dogs - I'm surprised it's taken me so long to watch this movie, and man was it glorious. Mr. Pink was the best part, followed by Tim Roth's character. I really like to think that Mr. Pink managed to make it out with the money.

A fried chicken fast food joint is built atop an anctient indian burial ground, and the Indian spirits are possessing the chickens to reak thier revenge. And it's a musical. If this hasnt' convinced you to watch this movie, you are dead inside. Very gory and explicit, with some nudity.

This has potential to be the greatest crap film I will ever watch in my life. I must see this!

Morning Glory: Film starring Rachel MacAdams, Harrison Ford, Jeff Goldblum and Patrick Wilson. It's about a girl named Becky (MacAdams) who loses her job as the producer of a morning news show. So she gets a new one on a slowly failing show and is tasked with getting the ratings back up. She employs Mike (Ford) to be an anchor on her show, but he's a really grumpy, horrible journalist who is very 'pedigree' and hates everything to do with infotainment, but he has to take the job or he loses his contract with the network.

I really like this film, like REALLY liked it. I totally connected with Becky. Rachel MacAdams was brilliant in this role, and she was awesome alongside Harrison Ford. I kind of had this thought that Becky is me in my early 30's. It was pretty funny at times and quite heartfelt whilst not trying too hard to be either. There wasn't a whole lot of emphasis on Becky being such a hardworking career female that she can't have a boyfriend, in fact the love story was pretty secondary to her building a bond and helping Mike not be so grumpy. This was such an enjoyable movie though, maybe because it was about journalism and media, I really liked it.

I liked the made for television movie better because the focus was on Hitchcock's unstable mental state and how he used his frustrations toward his leading ladies in his films. For this film, the focus was more so on his tumultuous relationship with his wife and how she was the driving force for many of his films. While the performances were good, I thought this was a lot less interesting. She was probably overlooked in this, but Scar Jo (horrible nickname by the way) did a good job playing a very convincing Janet Leigh. My favorite part of the film was the scene where Hitchcock is imagining the man he thinks his wife is having an affair with as he makes stabbing motions during the famous Psycho shower scene. A lot of the characters looked like the real people they were portraying which was nice, but overall, this didn't feel like a movie that can't be passed up. In fact, I can see why this wasn't nominated for an Oscar — it is at most — easily forgettable.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Took me a few watches cause I was putting it on at night and kept falling asleep (which is just a 'me' thing, nothing to do with the movie really), but once I got through the whole thing I loved it. I read the book so many times as a child and even though I haven't picked it up in years the movie brought back so many great memories. The second half of the film especially was amazing, the game of riddles gave me actual chills when I was watching it. 8/10

A Good Day to Die Hard

And one of those points is for McClane's vest. Ultimately, any Die Hard film is going to be compared to the original. The original has: a simple premise; flawed characters that you can relate to; a small number of bad guys who are fleshed out; Alan Rickman hamming it up; and very tight action sequences. The new film has... none of that. I didn't care about the characters, the plot (and that's using the word 'plot' in its loosest possible sense) is incomprehensible, and stupid action sequences which involve destroying half of Moscow.

Life of Pi. Great film, didn't particularly like the rather heavy-handed Aesop though. But from a technical standpoint it's flawless, and the story is quite entertaining indeed. Apparently the book was much more subtle about its Aesop which probably would've worked a lot better, but then it's a bit more difficult to be subtle on film. Film isn't a medium that lends itself well to subtlety, I don't think; if you're too subtle large numbers of people will miss it entirely. Of course they probably could've been subtler without people missing the intended message, but whatever :monster: The Best Soundtrack, Best Director, and special effects Oscars were certainly well earned, at least :monster:

Silver Linings Playbook

Looooved it. Definitely my kind of movie, and I had a feeling I was going to enjoy it basically from the first moment I heard about it. Great acting/cast, awesome story and I really enjoy movies that focus on mental health. It also didn't hurt that Jennifer Lawrence's boobies were bouncing all over the damn place. 9/10

I found this movie to be boring. There were a few jumps, but nothing to keep me up at night, not even the ~scary~ visuals, much less the torture. Maybe I'm just desensitized, but either way, if the background music did more work in doing that than the actual movie, I find it a problem.

I did like the use of 8mm films, but.... everything else just bored me. Ethan Hawke's character went about the films' dark secrets in a typical way, resulting in an unsurprising and typical ending that left me unimpressed.
