Instead you'd be risking your life just by being in the world. I mean, how many nameless NPCs do you see get slaughtered? You'd much rather be a recurring named NPC. Always there, popping around, sometimes comedy relief, but almost never endangered.

Locke, because he has a sense of dignity (he's not a theif, he's a TREASURE HUNTER) and helps anyone in need, even if that was because of his memories of Rachel

Edward had it pretty good. He journeyed with the heroes just long enough to be associated with them, during which time he mostly hid off-screen while they fought monsters, and then he got to lie in bed playing a harp for the rest of the game. I'm not 100% sure if watching your lover die shielding you from arrows is worth being able to lie in bed all day from then on, but it's a pretty close call.

Locke is another obvious choice, since he gets to hook up with Celes. And the ability to steal anything, down to the clothes right off of someone's back, is pretty cool too.
