Midgar Zolom.
I recently thought of something... which I quite doubt hasn't been thought before. What it all boils down to is... lacking translation. The thought:
Midgar Zolom = Midgårdsorm [å pronounced much like ô in french]
Comments? I don't know how the japanese FF7 spells it, but I have some knowledge of the Midgårdsorm ('the Midgårdsorm' is written properly in swedish as Midgårdsormen).
Midgårdsormen is a biiiiig snake, parented by Loke/Loki and Angerboda (giants). Curiosa: This snake wasn't the only child, see. It's siblings were Hel, the Fenriswolf and, incidentally, Narfe [Narshe?]. Midgårdsormen was so big it completely encircled Midgård, humanity's home in Yggdrasil, the world-ashtree, and it was thrown there by Oden/Odin (e and i was represented by the rune I). During Ragnarök, Tor and Midgårdsormen kills each other.
With this in mind, doesn't it make some sense that Midgar Zolom should be Midgårdsorm?

Makes sense to me. I've also heard that Nibelheim has something to do with Norse mythology as well...
-
Midgar is Midgard, the Midgar Zolom is the Midgard Sorm, Nibelheim is Niflheim, Gunge Lance is Gungnir, etc.
-
Nifelheim: The cold realm inhabited by the rimturses (icegiants).
DocFrance are right. (www.paranormal.se is TEH WIN!!1 IF you know swedish. :p)
Ouch, whoever translated Gunge Lance instead of Gugnir should be imprisoned!
-
Back to Norse Mythology again, eh?
*cries*
-
I thought it was Jormungand who circled Midgard.
-
I don't think that's impossible, but Midgårdsormen was in the ocean. Maybe Jormungand is the ocean? I'm too soon out of bed to check for myself. :p

-
... I'll be damned. Now that I think of it, the name Midgård Serpent isn't consistent with the other names... But of course. Oh well, now that's hopefully cleared up. Jormungand = Midgard serpent.

Uhh duh!?! of course its refering to the snake of norse mythology! Havent u ever noticed the influence of mythology on FF games? I mean its pretty unavoidable. Im not saying i know all of them but check it out:
Odin-Lord of Valhalla
Shiva-Hindu god
Quezacotl-Aztec god
Cerberus-Gaurdian tot he gates of Hades
Ramuh-if u cant figure this one out theres no help for u
Eden-duh!
Diablos-another duh!
Siren-Evil Beautiful voiced women who lead sailors to their death in the Odessy.
Thats just naming a few, get my point?
-
I don't think Hinduism is nearly widely enough known to say that people who don't know it are hopeless.
-
Ramuh has nothing to do with Hinduism; the name is a mistranslation of Lahmu, who comes from the same Babylonian/Sumerian mythology as Tiamat, Gilgamesh, Enkidu, and Humbaba.

That's interesting...
... Just so you know: The word 'Midgårdsormen' isn't swedish but danish. :)
