A'yo, how many poeple besides me think that the south messed up the Rap game. I mean, there are so many Hip Hop artist from the south that suck. Now, I'm from the south and I would rather listen to a Hip Hop artist from the mid-west or east. But don't get me wrong. Not all the Hip Hop artist from the south sick. Just most of them that get too much credit. Now the south has some of the best beats for songs in the entire U.S. But their lyrics suck. What do you guys think?

I consider Hip Hop and Rap to be two totally different things. As far as the difference between southern rap and others, I don't really have an opinion because I'm not that involved with it. Personally, I don't think that the area you're from should really have that much effect on your music. Nobody ruined anything; it's just different in ways. That's just my piece.
I can enjoy a lot of hip hop, but rapping ruins it :(. Only exception would be if they're funny. I can't stand rappers rapping about how hard a life they've had, or how much bling and hoes they have.
This is like my favorite type of rap. It's like a musical biography, and it makes you think that what you're going through e.g. too much homework, has nothing to do with what they have gone through.Quote:

You can rap to many kinds of music, or no music at all :p. I regard rapping as a style of talking/singing, then "hip hop" as the kind of music usually used by most rappers.
Well, now that I look into it, Hip Hop and Rap are synonymous in instances. There is rap music and there is hip hop culture.
Alright then, For one thing, the lyric of the south are too simple. Have you ever heard a song By Paul Wall? Young Geezy? Lil Wayne? The Six Mafia? Them Franchise Boyz? T.I.? They all suck in most of their songs. Second of all, they say the same things in there songs over and over again. Thrid of all, most of them don't even write their own lyrics. First of all, whether they suck or not is an opinion. Secondly, most songs say the same thing over and over again. Maybe not most rap songs, but most songs in general. Thirdly, lots of artists don't write their own lyrics, and I guarantee it's not every southern rap artist that doesn't write their own lyrics, just a handful you choose to point out.Quote:

It's up to the person listening to the song to determine if it sucks or not. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Saying the same thing repeatedly in a song is a part of music. It gives it a sense of pattern. That's why "hooks" are put in rap. Lastly, not writing your own lyrics is something I can't really agree with. However, the artists are paid to perform the music, not write it.Quote:

Yeah, because they don't know any better, and most people raised in the north think it to be so far superior. Granted a lot of the school in New England are better in general, but that area of the country is far from better. This coming from someone born and raised in MA. First of all, whether are not it's my opinion, it's true. I could sing their lyric in my sleep after hearing them for the first time. Secondly, most songs may say the same things, but they all don't have the same flavor. Southern Hip Hop/Rap artist have the same exact feelings as their last song. Lastly, in Rap/Hip Hop, it's all about how you the artist feel. If some one wrote all of your songs for you, your as fake as breast implants.Quote:

I listen to a bit of hip hop without any lyrics, and I can hear rapping in many other musical genres than where it's commonly found.

The lyrics don't need to have too much to do with the musical style of a song. If a metal band suddenly decided to sing about romance in one of their songs, the song could still be in the metal genre. Likewise, your typical pop singer could be singing about satan returning to earth and devouring souls, and it wouldn't count as metal :p.

Hip hop Is Dead.
You want real rap listen to someone like Sir-mix-alot. Either that or the only man today who can save the rap game, Jason Mraz.
I wouldn't say rap is dead, yet.
There are still many rappers, who actually have lyrics which have deep meaning, but most of them like to now talk about hoes, and guns, and killing some guy who tried to smurf his bitch.
That's what it's mainly about these days, and to be up front- I like the southern rappers. I don't really care about the lyrics, i just like the beats, and the way they spray their bars.
I was referring to the new Nas CD. I think rap has lost it's touch except a few artists who have been around and make music for the people and not for the money.

I would partly agree with you. Hip-hop from the south usually consist's of party music for club's. But let's face it, gone are the day's of rap where it was intense, and i don't mean the intense where-as 50 Cent talk's about killing you 57 times in one song, i mean the real raw lyric's carried out by 2Pac, KRS 1, people like that. Not only is the rap community lacking in natural talent as someone like 2Pac, but also, they aren't given a contract unless you can sing like Lil' Jon.
Almost all the rap i listen to nowaday's is from 88-96 period, and although there is nowaday exception's, it just isn't the same. I soley blame commercialism.
Yeah, most rap I listen to is from the 90's unless it happens to be a newer Naz or AZ CD.
A'yo hold on. I never said Hip-Hop or Rap is dead. People, I'm going to say this once and only once. These two catogories are not going anywhere. And I agree that in the 90s Rap and Hip-hop reached it highest statue. However, that does not mean it won't go higher. And If you guys believe that Hip-Hop and Rap is all about Cars, Women, Murder, and Money, then your obviously been listening to the industrayal Rap and Hip Hop too long. You see, today's artist didn't make Hip Hop and Rap what it is today. The Industry did. And the south is almost completely taken over by industry artist. You know, the kind that don't write there own songs. If you want to hear real lyrics that came from the heart, regredless of what's being said, listen to same underground Rap and Hip Hop. Then come talk to me.
I can't hate on the South because Outkast are from Georgia and they can spit some fire (listen to "Bombs over Baghdad" and try to say otherwise). Ludacris is also a very respectable rapper from the south.
I honestly wouldn't worry so much. Hip-hop has become just as diverse a genre and label as "Rock" music. Just think of the Krunk/Dirty South songs as another fad. Remember how huge Cali gangsta rap used to be? I'm sure people who listened to old school hip hop and didn't like that sound at the time said the same thing. The hype surrounding southern rap will die down until the masses choose to embrace something else.
As I said, hip-hop is so diverse that you'll find stuff you like and stuff you won't. Whether you turn to turntablism (RJD2, Shadow, X-Ecutioners) or to the underground (MF Doom, Blackalicious, Mos Def) or even back to older stuff (to name a few sub-categories), there's something that you'll like. Does it really matter which one is popular at the moment?
Actually, to be honest, most of the time it is a popularity contest which I think is sad.
There's still a whole lot of genuine creativity and and talent in the rap and hip-hop world; the only real problem is commercialism. So much contemporary hip-hop is manufactured, paint-by-numbers stuff that's just responding to what the market has been trained to buy. The result is that the truly good stuff is relegated to the artistic underground. The general public form a low opinion of the genre because of the mass-produced material that's saturating the market, so they never get a real chance to experience and appreciate the honest, compelling stuff that's out there. Even some self-proclaimed fans probably never get exposed to the real talent.
Basically, I think that people like Bubba Sparxxx and Chingy represent everything that's wrong with hip-hop today. Not just them, of course, but performers of their type.
I figured as much. Again, like I said in the FF8 Rap thread, I don't like rap or hip hop, at all. But what makes me hate it is the lack of complexity and how repetitive it is, along with the subject matter of the music. If it was different, who knows, maybe I'd like it. But then again, there is one rap/hip hop artist I like, I just can't remember who he is. I just remember that he didn't rap about sex/drugs/violence and constantly swear up a storm in the rap. He's a newer artist, I think...anyone have any idea who I'm talking about? o_OQuote:

If you listened to more hip hop you would know there are a few rappers who spit knowledge.
