You're forgetting the touching scene in the basketball court. It's on par with those 'it was all a dream' plot twists. :p
ZOMG! Gfs make us forget things! ... What are GFs again?
Yes, the GF plot device is what ultimately put me off FFVIII...
Although Laguna's flashback antics are pretty dire too, particularly his luck with women, map-reading 'skills' and his acting and... pretty much everything else. :D
The bit where Laguna was a prisoner was a complete snore.
I like a lot of parts in the game.
1. When you meet Irvine and you have to split into 2 parties and he had Selphie and Rinoa on his arms. That wasn't really dumb though... just awesome.
2. Zell wanting to shake everyone's hand and they ignore him. "Put it there man." lol
Yeah, I think these are more funny than dumb. :|
In the desert prison where squall is on the bottom floor and zell (i think) is a few floors up fighting, then squall comes in to help him and flies down from above and slashes some enemies even though he was below him before.
Laguna's leg cramp was awkward too
It wasn't Dollet it was Deling City. Anyway, the part above is funny. Zell grabs Squall's leg and then Squall bashes him with his gunblade
Just Laguna's leg cramping.
Um.. like nothing?
*shudders so violently that the house shakes and the roof collapses*
You know what I thought was stupid? The fact that Irvine was meant to shoot Edea while she was riding her parade vehicle. The hilarious thing is, when he's standing on the clock tower, looking into the gateway, the back of the vehicle totally blocks her, yet somehow the bullet reaches her and she catches it!
The beginning was pretty dumb, and then the middles and...oh yeah! then the ending. Someone should have died.
IF i'm not mistaken ultimecia dies :D
Odin too
Ok, touche.
Squall, Rinoa, Quistis, Zell, Irvine, Edea, Cid, Seifer or Laguna should have died.
"I said get off! Your services are no longer required." :D :D :D Another stupid part is when Irvine has remorse before shooting Edea...like c'mon! I almost felt Squall's frustration in that moment.
Everything after the opening FMV.
when you meet selphie and she falls off the rocks like an idiot.
i thought Seifer slicing Odin in half was just.... dumb. Odin can kill all these big bad monsters and one slash from a human just kills him like that :eep:
You mean Matron?
It would seem to be a reasonable explanation, although at the time, it looks like he tries to shoot and simply chokes. Although I would have liked to see a scene where Irvine addresses the assassination attempt in light of later events.
i'll tell you how it is, Irvine explains exactly. He said that he never actually killed a human and that when he had to he just couldn't pull the trigger.:greenie:
I know he gives that explanation, but Omecle raised a valid point about additional reasons that Irvine may have had but left unsaid at the the time.
is this theory strengthened anywhere along the game? does irvine say something that nobody knew?
thats right, when you get to the orphanage irvine says he knew everyone from the moment he met them at galbadia. But he didnt say anything because everyone else didnt even recognise eachother.
While they talk about the past they mention matron, only then does everyone even irvine realise that edea is matron, so he only didnt shoot at her straight away becuase he was nervous:eek:
The part where Zell was doing fighting moves in the hall of Balamb Garden and backflipped and landed on his head and his yarmulke flew off.
Its been a while since ive played but i remember finding out there was a big fat ugly alien :skull::skull::skull::skull: residing at the lower level of the garden that no-one knew about :S
on the SeeD exam out of all the squads with students why was seifer the only one who didnt have to where the balamb uniform:confused:
cuz he's gangsta:cool:plus Squall isn't better off either, i would have wanted a furr coat too :(
The whole darned game :p
Running away from ATM0002 or whatever it was called, unable to dent it, then it's completely destroyed by a few rounds from a machine gun. If only Barrett was there eh!
Actually it can be destroyed, and if you do, the machine gun sequence gets omitted.
Aye if you're ridiculously overpowered for that stage of the game.
I still think it'd be easier to find the "off" button :D
Biggs and Wedge
The fact you can't (At least I don't think you can) go anywhere straight before the castle. Only thing I don't like. All the other FFs you can get out of the last place an explore the towns and the like.
You can go to chocobo forests, get the Ragnarok, and play Triple Triad. With Tonberry you can access any shop you've been to before. That's about it.
And if memory serves, FFV cuts most of the overworld towns off the map near the end as well.
Three words: Jail break "showcase". It's so bad and horribly embarassing I actually turn off my monitor because it's so painful to watch.
About Irvine remember Edea, I think he did. He basically states...
"Matron is Soceress Edea."
Now, I could be mistaken, but the statement sounds like something he already knew. If he didn't know, I would think that he wouldn't be so straightforward.
Now back to topic, the dumbest moment in my opinion was having to constantly save Rinoa. I mean, come on! Can't I let her die?
here is a dumb and questionable issue, pay attention guys: in FFs you are given the possibility to ride chocobos, in FF8 in chocobo minigame his friends are tornberry and cactuar. Now, if chocobo is your SLAVE, everything makes sense. But, if he's your FRIEND, then why are tornberry and cactuar your enemies?
Never played the mini-game, but you can recruit a Tonberry and Cactuar as GF's by defeating them. So you could have all three as allies, if not necessarily friends.
that doesn't answer my question
If Tonberries and Cactuars the party fights in FFVIII do not include the ones that chocobo knows in the mini-game, then there's no contradiction. I would assume the bulk of Cactaurs and Tonberries do not know chocobo personally.
Unless the Cactuar and Tonberry in the mini-game specifically appear in FFVIII as well, like say Jumbo Cactuar and Tonberry King.
those are exactly the ones i'm talking about :)
how at the beginning, SeeD members had to all fight the same gf. Is Squall the only one who isnt so crappy that they cant beat ifrit.
The thing that get's me is how the hell are the people at SeeD getting paid when they are in Ultimecia's castle in the future.
I found two really dumb moment in this game ,First when you go to timber maniacs and there is a man that if you talk to him he start talking till Squall will get out of the room ,And the second and really the dumbest is when Squall will save Zell in the D-Desert-prison .
Well somebody once said that the in-game FFVIII is different than the REAL FFVIII...matrix trivia if you ask me:rolleyes2
Squall and his party, went up in the elevator that goes up and down the center of the building. squall then jumped from that.Quote:
In the desert prison where squall is on the bottom floor and zell (i think) is a few floors up fighting, then squall comes in to help him and flies down from above and slashes some enemies even though he was below him before.
Aussi, Irvine never showed remorse for Edea, Irvines character was the wussy character. He just got scared, he never showed remorse as far as I can remember.
As for 'dumbest' moments. It was when I saw the thread titled "Embaresment" or something similar to that...
How 'bout in disc 1 when they were on the important mission to assassinate the sorceress Quistis abandons her post because she felt she had hurt Rinoa's feelings and wants to go apologize right then and there.
The game just went downhill from that point on. It was pretty cool up to that point.
Think about it. Cid is one of the most physically pathetic characters in the game. Do you really think it's odd that he would do whatever it takes to avoid making late payments to a group of elite mercenaries? Not the sort of people you want to piss off.
that's because it's direct deposit straight into their accounts
i mean what the hell kind of currency is gil anyway?
is it cash, coins, shiny stones?
NORG and summon sequences. screw boosts =P
When zell is dumb enough to tell that president they were from the garden.
Doesn't really matter. They guy's supposed to be a trained hitman. Then again, I guess it's alright killing out squads of G-Troopers but having doubts about shooting Edy. I actually really felt like poking Irvine with that gunblade a couple of times when he brought out that line.
2nd'ed.
in Zells house, foiund an old issue of timber maniacs..............NOT!
Ok Irvine Kinneas says essentially that during an assasination shot the sniper is going to go down in history, suceede or fail. They've got 1 bullet, 1 opportunity and thats that. They screw up they're dead, they suceede and quite frankly they've gotta out run the mob of angry soldiers or die. The mission was a complete set up they were used by Martine who wasn't meant to assign Balamb SeeDs to the mission. He knew he was the one who made a difference, FRONTAL assault? come on, thats plain suicide for anyone there was hundreds of soldiers in that street plus Seifer and then finally some kick ass woman who has powers with magic that even a GF would be hard pressed to beat in a stand up fight. Squall understands this only too well but he also is so stoic he'll follow orders to the end he tries to take some of the pressure off Irvine by saying; All I need is the shot, miss for all I care, just give me a sign I'll take care of it afterwards.
Rinoa being a damsel in distress in space. *kills self*
Oh yes, and that bitch Ultimecia.
Raijin in the lake.
It wasn't so bad.
the whole
Quistis: actually i love Squall like a brother
stuff, oh yeah really thats why u've been kissing his ass the whole game. total cop out cos they needed to rush the squall rinoa tosh up
Despite it all being bad, Ultimecia was especially dumb.
"Kurse all SeeD! Swarming like lokus throughout the generations!"
Edea and Seifer made a cool main villain combo. If only they stopped it at CD2 and totally left out Ultimecia.
They're not. Time is compressed. Hence why it's called Time Compression. That means past, present, and future merged together. Think of it like the End of Time in CT, except it's an amalgam of time periods that is somewhere outside of time itself instead of a total void of time periods with gates that lead to different epochs.
And in Deling City. And during the battle between Balamb Garden and Galbadia Garden. And while being imprisonned in the Sorceress Memorial. And after Adel junctionned to her.Quote:

"...Poor, poor boy..."
"Such a confused little boy. Are you going to step forward? Retreat? You have to decide."
This was Ultimecia(inside Edea's body) talking with Seifer, in Timber.
Ultimecia was there all the time. This is why Edea(the true one) said that Ultimecia was possessing her BODY. But you didn't pay attention to that.
Yes they are. Before you enter Lunatic Pandora, Dr. Odine explained that Squall and the others would go throught TC, and LEAVE it. When they leave TC, they would be in Ultimecia's future.Quote:

After talking with many people in many forums, i discovered the truth. And the truth is... Many people don't like the story of FFVIII, because they didn't pay attention to it.
I think what he meant was that he would have preferred Ultimecia to be written out of the story completely and for Edea's villainous persona to be her actual character, rather then Ultimecia speaking through her.Quote:

besides, that part of the story was really big to miss so there's no way that i could finish the game 5 times and still not pay attention to that =p
Can you explain why you think it would be better? Because excluding their physical appearance, "evil" Edea and Ultimecia are literally the same person.
Because they didn't understand the story. Because they didn't understand that Ultimecia was introduced in the 1st CD(in Timber), and Edea was introduced only in the 3rd CD.Quote:

I'm sorry, but i still cannot understand why people prefer the villain Edea over Ultimecia. Because that means they prefer Ultimecia over Ultimecia. And that don't make any sense!
Wrong. Edea is introduced in the first disc. Her true self/Personality is introduced in disc 3 (2 actually because of the ending of that disc).Quote:

And my question is: Why?Quote:

Normally, what make a character interesting is his/her personality, or intelligence, or power, or all of them together, or etc.
But... It was Ultimecia's personality, Ultimecia's power, Ultimecia's intelligence, etc. It was all her. And they still wish she had never been in the game? And they still say she is a crap villain?
What is so great about the "inanimate" shell Edea(because this is what she was during discs 1 and 2) that make her be so better than Ultimecia?
I cannot understand that.
Fixed for you.Quote:
They wish Edea had the same personality of Ultimecia.
That was not at all what I said. I said that at the END of disc 2 her true personality was revealed. I was agreeing with you kind of.Quote:

I hate Jumbo Cacktuar... more than Ruby Dragon..
I think the crowd was under some type of spell during Ultimecia's speech in Galbadia.
i think it was when u beat seifer at lunatic pandora and u just see him leave the screen and then quistis says rinoa(or wateva you named her)has been taken by seifer WTF
Most of the ingame scenarios are stupid...
i like the story.. pretty awsome.. and lots of side quest..
one thing though.. i didnt like the card game(prob cause i didnt get it.. and thats cause i didnt try :P).. ghehe.. you should've seen my attempt at the queen side quest.. im still glad i already card-modded bahamut..
anyways.. back to the dumbest moment.. sgotta be the zell headthumping in d-district prison.
hahaha...I loved scene with Laguna and Julia in the Hotel room.
Laguna nods his head weird when he says "Hmm...must be tough!" It's funny to just leave it like that a minute without advancing the text.
Please keep in mind that this thread was created last year. I think that the scene mentioned in the opening post — Edea addressing and belittling the crowd — was an awkward scene.
Because Squall was thinking to himself about Seifer, death, and the past tense, and he lashed out at the other characters while they were only sitting around and talking about the situation at hand.
There is a screenshot of the scene in this topic and it does a play by play of the entire scene, and everyone has very awkward dialogue to the point that the situation would be very funny if it were played out in real life.
Shumi: I'm sorry. You need to pay me 5000 Gil in advance to use this draw point, and if there's no Ultima there, tough. No refunds.
Squall: Eh ok....
It should have been...
Shumi: I'm sorry. You need to pay me 5000 Gil in advance to use this draw point, and if there's no Ultima there, tough. No refunds.
Squall: Or, how about you get out of my way, before I shove this Gunblade where the sun don't shine. And if there's nothing there, I'll stick my Gunblade there anyway.
Shumi: Ok! Please God let there be something there......
Squall: Oh Shumi! Guess what was nowhere to be found?
I can understand why they charged money to use the Draw Point from a gameplay perspective, but I agree and I think that it could have been presented better.
I mean, i really like the game and story but the basketball court scene was a bit too.... i dunno. It seemed like they could have done better, the whole "we all grew up together and GFs omg"
Another point was some of rinoa's speach. "MEANIE" comes to mind, i hope to god in japan this was a better word choice. I just like to curl up in the fetal position and pretend she called him an ass like most others would.
I just didn't like how they spelled it :S
Irvine: By the way, we're all from the same orphanage, and Edea is our Matron.
Zell: Aw, how nice!
This is from Final Fantasy VIII In A Nutshell, a radioplay about Final Fantasy VIII.
This summarizes my thoughts on the orphanage plot twist.
Ah, good.
At least I'm not the only one.
The only two perhaps :p
Faaaaar too much of a coincidence. And I seem to remember Rinoa acting out "feeling left out" as "acting like a spoilt brat" didn't help either!
I found it to be the least plausible of all the moments in FFVIII (although FFX-2 has a worse one), but it didn't have to be. If the game script had made the GF amnesia and 'haven't we met before?' moments more integral to the story it would of felt a lot less like a deus ex machina scene. As written you can practically hear the plot machinery grinding away in the background.
I liked how unexpected it was :S
Irvine just suddenly starts talkinga about an orphanage, and Selphie and Quistis go HAY I KNOW THAT PLACE! and I'm just looking at the screen like WTF O_O when this all unravels xD
As much as I adore Quistis, some of the stuff she said to Squall was awkward and annoying. That being said, she still kicks Rinoa's ass.

It's the way they zoom each character into the camera (slowly) only for them to say things like "YES!". They were obviously trying to pull off a Y/R/P type thing, but it didn't quite work with the technology at the time.
Add in the Moomba going "rrrgh!" and you have a pretty dumb scene :p
Yes xD
Aww I thought that was totally cute.
I really think that people over-rate the orphanage scene. It was a bit of a weak moment, but most stories have these moments. VII had one of the biggest plot holes in history. I'm referring to the story-time scene at Kalm, where Cloud fills in the whole Nibelheim story. Why does Tifa not step in at that point and say, "Hey Cloud, this story is wonderful, but you see, I was there, and I don't actually remember seeing you." Try explain that away.
& I think that some of the characters said some awkward things, but it wasn't like they were stepping out of character. Rinoa is someone who you could imagine saying MEANIE. Selphie is someone who would fall down. Irvine is a bit of a wuss. Squall is HUGELY troubled. And Zell is one of those people that everyone knew in school, the guy who tried too hard to fit in. He is almost as awkward as Ricky Gervais in The Office.
Anyway, dumbest moment in VIII is this: 'Back in the day, south of here, there used to be a small but beautiful village surrounded by deep forests. Everyone lived a happy life there.'
& when you get there, there's nothing there! Kind of like XII's story.
EDIT: I think Ultimecia & time compression aren't that dumb. Ultimecia & Squall are very different, both fearing that they will lose everything they care for. But Squall was able to overcome his problems and Ultimecia wasn't.
I do agree that Ultimecia should have been brought into the game earlier, and used more effectively though.
:p That's easily explained away - in fact, it's specifically addressed in the game. Tifa knew something seriously odd was happening to Cloud; ever since she found him semi-conscious in the train graveyard, she wanted to look after him and figure out what was going on. He talked weird, acted weird, and had inexplicable gaps in his memory, and inexplicable memories he shouldn't have. She didn't confront his fabricated memories because she was afraid of what would happen to him. Talking to her at various points - Kalm, Junon - shows that she's got real concerns about what he's been saying, but she tries to avoid the subject. So basically, her silence was due to her not wanting to shatter Cloud's illusions. And since only her and Cloud were actually at Nibelheim, why would the others believe her over him?
Zell's disturbing addiction to the cafeteria hot dogs. We don't know what they're made of here, imagine what they might be made of in a world where Ochus, Malboros, Wendigos, and Caterchipillars roam free.:sweatdrop
And I would take offense to people saying Squall is deeply disturbed but my test result came back as him so I'll say ...whatever.
You are correct, it is addressed in the game. Just like everyone forgetting they were at the same orphanage is addressed in the game.
My point is: is the explanation around Tifa's non-action any better than "the guardian forces made me forget". I think most stories have areas that are implausible, or are fixed through things like the GF made me forget. At the end of the day, VIII managed to use this weakness to reinforce the theme of companionship in the game - Yes, GFs made them lose their memory, but if they reminded each other, and remained friends, then they could overcome this. Just like later in the game, to survive time compression.
I think Square had some fun with the GF business though. Squall uses "the GF made me forget" as an excuse with Rinoa. That made me chuckle.
Anything involving Zell, just about. He pissed me so very off.
the bit where after visiting dr odine you err catapult of into space
is it just me or was there nothing mentioned about goin into space what so evr til 2 minutes beforehand?
and squall seem to know about it but i didnt
Yeah, that got me too. He's told to go to Lunar Gate (sorry, I mean [Lunar Gate]) to see Ellone; once he's there, they just tell him - out of the blue - that he's been expected, and that he'll be heading into orbit. You'd think a little prior warning would be expected...
thing is squall knew about it,when asked if your(the party) are the ones going into space he replies yes and seems not even fased or curious as to why at all
I think he was in a fairly dazed "yeah whatever" type mood and not really paying attention to or caring what he was about to do as long as it'd help bring Rinoa back.
i think the developers accidently left out at least ten lines of dialoge at that part of the game
Not really dumb moments, but...
...making Cid look like Robin Williams in appearance...
...and making Zell supress his sexuality (because, you know, we can have gay couples in books and TV shows and movies, but it's disgraceful to have it in a game, even one aimed at teenagers)...
...and not making Quitis do anything with her whip...
...and making Dr Odine the only German person there amongst a bunch of Americans...
and making Rinoa go after a bastard Squall when he clearly doesn't love her, let alone like her, when she starts making her stupid advances.
That's all i can thik of at the moment. :D
Rinoa is totally one of those jealous psycho girlfriends, too, I bet :p
i dont think zell actualy was gay
i think he was just a idiot and a pussy
that blue shirt, mini mog carrying kid who keeps running around the garden when there is a training centre and outside to run.
Cid and Edea going "home" to the orphanage in the latter half of the game. It's a knackered old ruin out in the middle of nowhere! Why not go live in the Garden?!
incase the students didnt want edea anywhere near them
True. You'd think there'd by somewhere they could hide out though other than some old bit of rubble.
My guess is they went there because they have a strong sentimental attachment to the orphanage.
You lot are no fun :(
Oh well here's another

His zipper's down? Dirty boy!!
Filthy Irvine for noticing! ;)
- The fact that people still insist on the R-U theory even though there's a lot of evidence against it, and it was clearly created by Rinoa haters.
- The fact that people dismiss the orphanage scene as "Deus Ex Machina"(sp?) purley because they didn't notice a ton of subtle clues leading up to it.
- The fact that people can't understand why Squall "suddenly fell for Rinoa" when there is NO SET TIME FOR THE GAME and that there where hints that he was devolping feelings for her as ealry as the parade.
- The fact that people dismiss the Gunblade becuase they can't understand the point.
- The fact that haters of this game practically force everyone to hate it - no other game has it that bad.
Such as Ellone clearly knowing both Squall and Quistis yet neither reconized her.Quote:

Irvine's comment to Selphie "We're destinied to be" on the train to Deling. Makes sense if you consider the fact that they somehow ended back together as adults.
Zell and Irvine not getting along too well. While playing once, I was in Balamb and I got that little event where Bad Rascal pushes the girl in front of the hotel. After I went into the hotel and back I talked to the guy and, with both Zell and Irvine in my team, got interesting dialogue hinting that Irvine had bullied Zell when they were kids :D
That's all I can think of right now for that.
Another dumb thing, is the simple lack of character development for everyone save Squall and Rinoa. I mean sure, they're the main central characters, but they completely ignored the others.
I agree with you on all points here. Sure it can be enjoyable to poke fun at the game's shortfalls, but people do tend to go too far - especially on the internet - with their hate-fuelled rage.Yes. In fact, Yes^2. This is my only real issue with FFVIII (and FFX, for that matter). Some truly fantastic characters who get cattle-prodded into the background once the leading lord and lady take centre-stage. The likes of Quistis definitely needed more screen-time, and more real exploration of their story.Quote:

Everyone else had their individual passions and such, but her only identifier was as an instructor, which she no longer is.
Others have pairings... Squall+Rinoa, Irvine+Selphie, Zell+Pigtail. She's just left with her unrequited love for Squall.
Maybe it was my imagination but there seemed to be other subtle moments in the game where she seemed to get "picked last" or disregarded or whatever.
Edit: And I seem to recall she had some foster parents once but "it didn't work out" - perhaps she was rejected then, too.
Yet she keeps her head held high and continues moving forward. It's this aspect of it which would've been interesting to explore in further detail.
"Sir Knight, I must bit you farewell."
Nice landing Ward...
Quistis "Do you know about Zell's famous incident?"
"He was in a hurry, took a sharp and landed in the women's bathroom."
Irvine "Wow, can I hold your grandfather's gun?"
Zell "Well, ok"
moments later
Zell "Hey! What are you doing?"
Zell "Haa!!!"
BANG
Squall (I knew he would)
1. Seifer's weakness when you battle him. I mean from the looks of the opening sequence battle with Squall you would've thought he's on par with Squall but when you battle with him at the end of Disc 1 it was a walk in the park.
2. "Yo mama wear combat boots!" from Mr. Monkey. Is that supposed to be an insult? Maybe it's some kind of Japanese joke, I dunno.
3. That Squall can't read Girl Next Door >.> He's a regular teenager he'd be tempted right?
4. During Time Compression, when they fall into the ocean, they can actually talk! And when Rinoa and Squall were out in space, they could talk too! Are they superhuman or what?
did anyone else think it was odd that the missle control panel had an error ratio section i mean if i was to design it i wouldnt want to trust that a bunch of two bit military officials would not try to mess with it just for fun
I would say with the time compression the ocean and non-ocean were both there at the same time and so they could talk and breathe, or the ocean was just an illusion.
In space, they could communicate once they were touching as the sound waves would pass through the space suits - or maybe they could just use the space radio thing (however that works). I did think the roaring noise of the ragnarok when its "head" spun into view was a bit dumb though - in space no-one can hear you roar, and why is an inanimate object roaring anyway!
I think it's about the same time he got his T-Board confiscated. (I assume, since he was late)
The only way to hear it is when you select Quistis during the liberation of Balamb. (The same for Irvine)
By the way, didn't anyone noticed that space suit have microphones transmitter-receivers?
It was said in jest. But he indeedy doesn't like porn, judging the reaction he had to Irvine's old magazine at the FH XD
He gave 'the girl next door' to Zone.
Not everyone likes XXX.
...except the movie featuring Vin Diesel.

Maybe he (like me) hates porn. Not every 17 year old is perverted.

Excellent point. They rip on this in detail at Videogame Recaps, I believe. What kind of idiot designs a missile system where you can choose to make them totally inaccurate? And have a whole specific control just so you can increase your chances of missing the target? Now, I'm sure there could be a sensible reason - like allowing them to make their missile strikes less precise and more indiscriminate, for the purposes of instilling fear and terror in enemy populations - but that's quite a stretch, and there are better ways to achieve it. Like manually programming a bunch of random targets.
Well now thanks for that, I Googled it and can now kiss goodbye to several hours of productivity. Those are hilarious :D It's a shame it'll be like 2025 before they're completed.
Thing is, though I may be wrong I seem to remember that whatever you set that thing at, if your time runs out you get to see a pretty video of Balamb Garden going collapse-collapse-squish-squash-KABOOM. You also get it if you fail to set the error ratio. Either way it seems a bit dumb - at the end of the day it's the moving Garden which saves it, which is based on the other team and a different set of events.
The stupidest, most 'wtf' part to me? When Squall, Zell, and Selphie are going to Timber in an underwater train, but for some odd reason sunlight is shining through the windows.
...

lol. i would have to say the dumbest part is the fact that they all grew up together and didnt know it cuz of the gfs. i was like "... *rolls eyes* whatever..."
xD I think we're meant to assume that they used GFs throughout their SeeD training, even before the events shown in the game. After all, Squall starts the game with his own GFs, and we're told that SeeD get their strength from the GFs. Aside from the them, Selphie used the GF she found as a child, and Irvine hasn't used them enough to have memory issues.
I agree that it's a really contrived series of events, but it basically works out.
After reading that recap site, I'll have to add the obligatory "anything featuring Laguna" and "Selphie's obsession with checking her shoes for dog poo" to the list :D
1. RU theory is as valid as any other theory, and shouldn't be discredited just because you don't agree with it.
2. Okay. Its not Deus Ex Machina. It's hinted at earlier in the game. It's still a stupid plot device imo
3. ...don't have an opinion on this one
4. Okay, here we go. Humor me. explain what the Gunblade is all about. Explain HOW it's a good idea, and how it would be advantageous in combat. I spar, and I know that using a sword with a handle at the angle of the Gunblade would result in (best case-scenario) VERY bad control ()ie awkwardness) which would lead to less force on blows, and (worst case scenario, but much more likely) the handle (or your wrist) snapping like a twig. Ever wonder why swords have their blades at a 180 degree angle to the handle? And what exactly is the trigger and barrel for? If you pulled the trigger, the barrel would explode since there's nowhere for the bullet to go, causing major damage to you and anyone who happens to be in extremely close proximity. And just so you can't say "A gunblade doesn't have to fire bullets, it causes vibrations, blah blah blah yap yap," a reading from the book of Websters.
1 a: a piece of ordnance usually with high muzzle velocity and comparatively flat trajectory b: a portable firearm (as a rifle or handgun) c: a device that throws a projectile

5. idk about others but I don't mind the plot. It's the awful gameplay that gets me. (Also, the fact that my FFVIII disc one is FUBAR, and nobody else has it)
Despite the etymology of the word 'gun', the fact remains that FFVIII's gunblades work the way its described in the canonical 'Ultimania' guidebook: they use blank rounds, and the energy surges through the blade adding extra force/high-frequency vibration to the blow.
Yep, it's a silly concept, and I'd agree that the handle shape and angle would make some gunblades very difficult to use properly - Seifer's, for instance, where it's at nearly a right-angle to the blade.
As silly as it would be in our world, we need to bear in mind that FFVIII takes place in a world where magic powers can deflect bullets, and a teenager with armoured gloves can defeat an army tank by punching it:p
Alright, nut in the much more realistic world of FFVIII is it too much to ask for that the "realism" isn't half-assed? They could have made the gun blade be a gun with a small blade under the handle for extreme last-minute defenses. Just a thought, I could prolly come up w/ something better.
Yep, there are indeed plenty of things they could've done - until the Ultimania guide cleared things up, I was adamant that the bullet was fired from the barrel-less chamber, directly parallel to the blade. It explained why there's no visible barrel, and how the gun aspect could possibly be useful. Heavy sword blow + high-caliber bullet = twice the hurt. It also explained why the bullets in Squall's gunblade case, shown during the black-and-white montage at the start, seem to have tips rather than being blank. Pity that didn't turn out to be the case though.
I think that disliking this game because gunblades are improbable and impractical is a bit silly. It isn't reality. Throughout VIII there was this dynamic between reality and fantasy, and I quite liked it. Although I doubt anyone here would be that shallow.
Don't get me started on R=U. All I will say is that just because something is possible, does not mean that you can accept that it has any merit. There are so many flaws in the theory, it is a joke.
VIII definitely does have some dumb and implausible moments, but so do most stories. Go read Lolita or Madame Bovary or any great piece of fiction and there will be some seriously suspect circumstances. My favourite one in VIII is that Garden floats towards Fisherman's Horizon.
a) What are the odds of it floating towards that exact location &
b) What are the odds that the place it lands will be full of ex-Esthar scientists?
The gunblade was there so that the game designers could test out the nifty new vibrating controllers (minds out of the gutter please), give you something to do other than attack and draw, and yet still have everyone's favourite FF leader style of weapon, a sword.
Realism doesn't come into it :p
yea seriously. now thats just a plot twist thats so cliche and thrown together. so .... idk.... kinda like replacement princesses. omg. i just beat the original tactics yesterday and when i found out that ovelia was a replacement i just went "...*facepalm* omg garnet!!!" ff series is just repeats of other ff's and they seem to be getting lamer as they go on, starting at 8. dont get me wrong, i loved the game, and it will always hold a special place in my heart as my first final fantasy, but tactics/7 = win/last good ones.
6. The fact that people don't understand that Ultimecia was introduced in the first disc of the game(using Edea's body as a host/shell to hide her true identity), simply because they didn't pay attention to the story.
Or that some people who already know that, still bash her for... No known reason.
And those same people loved the plot-twist of Sephiroth(from the first half of FFVII) not being the real Sephiroth, but Jenova. Those people don't wish that Sephiroth had never been in the game, and replaced by Jenova.
Funny how things are, uh? :rolleyes2
The dumbest moments in FF8 (the moments of the player after the game)...When people after playing the game come to this thread to tell the dumbest moments in the game. You're all wasting your life away trying to come up with the most useless answers to the most useless questions. If that isn't dumb then me having to explain this to you is. Live a little people. Live!
I am a Jester. Jest people Jest.
the bit with Zell.
By your logic, they didn't remember to put logic into the making of FFVII too, because it's allways afternoon in Junon. And they didn't rememember to put logic into the making of FFIX, because it's allways night at Treno, and it's allways raining in Burmecia.
They do put night into Junon, its just your never there when it happens :p
The point he is makeing is that when you enter the city its night and when you exit its miraculously day.
With Burmicia its called the rainy city for a reason, no problem with that either and with treno its night when your in the countryside, so it makes sence that when you enter the city its night there too :rolleyes2
Yeah it's nothing unusual - there are parts of the Earth where it's always raining too (the British Isles) and day or night lasts half a year (North Pole)
It's why they said that the BD allowed unsurpassed storage capacity giving the creator virtually limitless creation of ideas to implement in their games.
So that they're able to make it much more realistic than CDs/DVDs (You forgot FFX, FFXII has no nights...).
Lets get to something funny that isn't in relation to the limited disc storage.
Raijin get his @$$ kicked by Fujin, ya know.
Sick Soldiers by the trains.
Zell's Hot Dog rush, never actually gets one until the end...
The entire Cam Video is silly.
Watts & Zone (How do thoses two survive from the catastrophie of the Galbadian Army?)
.... what else.
squall, of all people, having to deliver a nudie mag lulz
Rinoa's dog, which has instant teleportation facilities to anywhere in the world and lives in another dimension.
Oh, and that reminds me - Seifer proving he's a big meany in that first mission when that dog turns up.
And from that I also recall being told about a "monster shaped shadow" on the tower. Geee..... I wonder what that could be..... a bird? a plane? ooh! It's a monster!
[QUOTE=The Crystal;2554372]Congratulations you've just quoted a post over a year old! Anyway, you're distracting from the Topic. This is about the dumbest moments in FFVIII. If you wish to make a similar topic in the FFVII section, then do so, or just PM me if you want to carry on something that's a year old.
Anyway.
I can agree with this. It was kinda stupid how Rinoa would whistle and her dog would run through a wall.Quote:

Monster: *bites Ward as he gets it*
Ward: OW! YOU CAN"T DO THAT!! IT'S MY TURN STILL!!
Monster: .......... *bites Ward again*
9999 damage! Ward is dead!
Laguna: OH SH*T! RUN! THESE MONSTER FIGHT WITH LOGIC INSTEAD OF PLAYING BY THE RULES!!!
Well, at least Angelo doesn't follow Rinoa out in space.
Let's try to focus on the funny things instead of thoses illogical.
Illogical is a synonym for dumb, which is the title of the thread... and my response fits in perfectly with all the others. I found these two things to be the among dumbest moments in FFVIII.
Main Entry: logical
Part of Speech: adjective
Definition: Consistent with reason and intellect.
Synonyms: consequent, intelligent, rational, reasonable
Now try telling me intelligent doesn't mean the same thing as smart.
shut up
but the ward skit was funny... and it totally fit with the thread so ....
Don't tell me to shut up or I might start crying
(Just kidding, thanks for the compliment ^_^)
I don't hate Rinoa (in fact, I like her) and I believe R=U is possible, where do that leave me then?
The reason why some people believe R=U is because it would make the plot of FFVIII better and more sense. Why would a 'Rinoa' hater support R=U? I don't understand. There are some people who dislike Rinoa but also don't believe in R=U.
By the way, there may be evidence that R=U is not true, but there are also some evidence that R=U is possible. Same applies to R not being U 100% because there are not enough evidence to support it.
id hate to believe in R=U
