Something like Untitled 1 by Sigur Ros or Casimir Pulaski Day by Sufjan Stevens fit the bill well. Both are fantastic songs anyway.

I highly recommend Blonde Redhead; not all of their songs are slow and depressing like the ones above.
I Wish It Would Rain by The Temptations. If theres a specific reason, I can give more songs. If its an angry sad from like a relationship, A little too late by toby keith is good.

Whatever version fits you better, but I think Jhonny Cash's version is the perfect song for this situations... specially if you can see the video

Whenever I hear someone ask this question I always recommend the opening chorus to J.S. Bachs Saint John Passion. I have yet to hear any music despair like this music does.

If you can listen to Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers from The Nutcracker and not be uplifted, you've got me impressed.
