Did anyone actually play this game on the NES?

Well, the title kind of states the obvious. Most people didn't know of FF until VII came into the scene. I, for one, didn't. Those that did know of FF were the ones that maybe played FFII and FFIII for the SNES. But did anyone here actually buy FF1 for their NES back in the 80's? Final Fantasy was non-existant in my country until VII. When I played it I still had my SNES back then and I looked everywhere for FF2 and 3 for the console but they were nowhere to be found and no one had heard of them either. I know a lot of people in this forum are from the US and the UK so I thought I'd find out cos that would be really cool, really experiencing the original.

P.S. by FFII and III I'm referring to the Western releases of IV and VI for the SNES. Just so no one gets confused ;-p

I did. I remember first seeing it as a child. My aunt had it. But I didn't get to play it all the way through myself until About 10-11 years ago or so when I got a used copy. But yes, I own and played the original NES cart.

FFI on th NES was my first FF. I own two copies. Anytime I play the game I refuse to play any version than the NES one, because it is superior.

I didn't. Have played the translated FFIII(J) on an emulator.

It sounds shallow but I must admit I love shiny new sprites, three-dees and musics.

That is so cool. I find the original old Final Fantasys are like good old music, you never get tired of them and they are timeless.

I agree with you there but there's just something about playing the originals that totally rocks. To be honest I couldn't be bothered with all these remakes. But everyone has their preferences, I know a lot of people who love the new Final Fantasys but wouldn't be seen dead playing the old ones.

I discovered Final Fantasy back in 2001, when a friend of mine insisted on my trying FF9 out.
I was amazed, and since then I played it everyday, bla-bla-bla.

I have a natural need to seek the "roots" of exactly anything, so of course I wanted to find the first games in the series.
I was hooked by them as well. :)

I think the Final Fantasy series is better than sex the best RPG series ever.
Dragon Quest is a close runner-up, though.

Yep. FF1 on the NES had me addicted. Even borrowed my cousin's Nintendo Power strategy guide at the time. There was a group of about a half-dozen of us who got heavily into it.

And yes, the NES was my first gaming platform. FF was probably the third game I ever finished, next to Metroid and Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest (both on the NES).

Also had the first Dragon Warrior (now Dragon Quest). I also borrowed Dragon Warrior 4 (which I probably enjoyed more than FF at the time).

I'd say I was jealous, but the fact is that I can't even find a PAL convertor to play a copy on my own NES, thus chances are I may never get to. Unless I move to America or something.

I have played it, although it was not my first FF (which was IV). Although certainly ahead of its time, the PlayStation version is still the most superior version.

I've never played FFI in my life, and I didn't know anything about the series until my uncle bought FFVII and FFVIII five years ago.

Now I'm going to leave you all with this post and never ever look in the FFI section again, so I don't have to hear read stuff I don't want to.

I played it on the snes it's really old though it freezes some times:(

What about it? You can still play and admire the older installments in the series, doesn't matter about your age.

On topic- I've never played this game on NES.

It's bloody hard. I've only got around to playing it once on NES, though I've played it a few times on GBA. And I don't think there was a version for SNES...

I got it for Christmas in 1990...I remember that's all I did for the entire next month when I wasn't in school. :) Beat it in about a month. Not bad for a 10-year-old!

Nowadays I have it on NESter; I've actually been playing it for the past couple of weeks. I'm on average about Lv. 27 (Kn/Ni/WW/BW) and I just got my @$$ handed to me by a bunch of Sorcerers in the Temple Of Chaos...right after I got the Masamune. My WW died and I couldn't use EXIT.

i started with VII, i think sometime after that I downloaded an NES emulator and played it on that. I was hooked, even though it seems mad dated I thought it was great considering its time.

After that a friend of mine actually found a copy of it for NES from a used game store, i used to borrow and play it on my NES but I think the memory chip doesn't work anymore or something.

I've beaten this on DoS, I liked it alot, my only complaint is it's too easy.

I had a friend who played that game. But,I got into when FF6(when it was final fanasy III for super NES) and then got the remade verison along with the gameboy verison.

That level would be absolutely ridiculous on the NES version. I usually beat it in the low twenties, and they max out at fifty.

Yea, I got FFI for the NES. I had played Dragon Warrior and when I read about Final Fantasy, I had to have it. I lost the cartridge somewhere along the line, but I still have my NES console and some of my other games.

Yes, I have FF for NES! And it still works! :D

I bought it when it first came out. I remember it took me about three weeks to beat because it was such an in-depth and complicated game (compared to Dragon Warrior, the only other RPG out for the NES at the time).

Nah. I have only been hooked on the series for 2 years (and have completed X, X-2, XII, III and played all of them :p) so I don't really want to bother going on eBay and buying a NES and the game. I own it for PSP and have only retireved the first crystal so far... :rolleyes2

I owned it for NES but, like most Nintendo game cartridges, it died. I came across another one owned by my neighbor a couple years later and bought it from him only to have it die not long afterwards, too.

I would be one of the many gothic_fantasy alluded to in the original post, having not heard of the Final Fantasy games until after VII had been released. As a result, I have only ever played the enhanced remake of FFI for the PlayStation. I thought the PS1 version was brilliant, and to be honest, have no intention of playing the NES version. However, I've been looking out for a copy of Dawn of Souls.

I use to have it for the NES but it died.

Didn't play it on a NES emulator until about 2003 or 4. Was never released here in Britain, plus the game is older than I am. I spent my childhood playing Sonic the Hedgehog! I think I prefer the DoS version because it doesn't irritate me as much as the NES one does at times. Perhaps I'm just a wimp though.

No I didn't. Back when I had a NES I was just a kid and was very much into games like Mario, Kirby and Battletoads etc. I didn't know that much, if anything, about games back then, and I didn't know that there was a game series called Final Fantasy until 1997 (yep, FF7 everyone). Anyway, I've bought the remake (Final Fantasy Origins) and I'm pretty satisfied with only having played that version.. although it would of course be cool and retro to own the original NES game.

I dont own it for the NES but did play it at a friends once quite a long time ago. But ive got it on PSP now and am happy with that:)

I got it for my 7th birthday. I got stuck in the Marsh Cave until I was in grade 6 (kinda forgot about the game in the meantime).

Played? Yes. Beat? No. Or rather, not with the NES cartridge, which was a rental. I beat the NES version on an emulator, many years after its release.

I think the farthest I went with the rental was to the Temple of Fiends, and Garland beat me hard. I was only seven and didn't understand English, so I have a good excuse!

Being 7 and not understanding the language of the game may be a good excuse, but it's still the first I've ever heard of someone losing to Garland.

Absolutely. While I love the NES version, I like the updated versions more because there is no swinging at enemies that aren't there and all the spells work. FF1 is a somewhat difficult game, and it gets much harder when your guys are swinging at thin air...

There's a way to fix that. Instead of button mashing, try thinking about whether the monster is going to die and adjust who attacks who by it.

Well yea, I know that, but it doesn't mean you always get it right...

I played it for PS1 (on Origins) for the first time. Then I played it on the GBA version ever since. No need for the NES, as "Hard Mode" on the PS1 version is just that.

w00p!! somebody else who enjoyed Dragon Warrior.

I played FF1 back in the 80's when I was around 8 or 9 but I didn't really understand it back then, I was more into the Batman game :)

I never played Dragon Warrior though until last year when I bought a used NES and it came with it. In my opinion Dragon Warrior is better than FF1. I wish I could find Dragon Warrior 2 or 3 for a decent price. The NES game catalog I have access to, for which I can order the games, prices 2 and 3 at over 100 dollars each. Just not willing to dish that out for an NES game.

Try eBay. There are usually carts for a reasonable price on there.
