I personally see this as a good thing, since IV lacked a bit in the character customization department. But I can also see why people won't like this. Still, Rydia + Rosa performing 'Twin' = win.

The second screen is a nice GCI image of DK Cecil and Rosa that makes me dare to hope for FMV in teh game, not just an intro. The third screen is a nice look of Edge and the party just before they fight Rubicante (the Lord himself not vissible, alas). The last two are Yang and Rydia in all their CGI glory.

EDIT23- (12-13-2007): Here's a new Creator's Voice whateverish, all in Japanese, so no good for those of us who can't understand Japanese. Howeve, this site contains many videos of the game, including Golbez' grand entrance in Fabul, battle footage, naming way (he can still change names it seems) and other stuff. You can also hear the in-game music in the videos, so it's worth to check it all out.

It's interesting that bosses have a different battle-view than normal random encounters...

I also think this scan kind of proves there will be voice-acting... I mean, the japanese text on the screens is not shown in a dialogue-box (or however you spell that), but more in a subtitle-like way, like in X and XII. I don't see a button to scroll the text (like A or an arrow) in the corner either...

Isn't it a bit obvious that this scan has no colour? Former scans have already shown Rydia with her green hair.

Kain looks like a blocky mess but the other two look pretty cool. Hopefully we'll be seeing more of the new character designs in the future (specifically Golbez, since from the logo it looks like they've turned him into an absolute beast).

It won't take that long. This game is still suposed to be released in 2007 in Japan, so if that's true, I guess it'll be spring 2008 when it gets released in US. Us Europeans won't have that luck I guess. 2009 is very possible for us. If we're lucky...

True, I did that with FF III DS. Problem is the WiFi. A friend of me recently bought the European version and I wanted to give him Onion Knight but apparently we oculdn't add each other's friend code.

If FF IV DS doesn't have WiFi that's no problem of course.

They said in initial interviews on FFIV DS that they will be taking the focus off of touch screen and wi-fi capabilities since they don't think it's particularly necessary. Considering how tacked on and annoying the Wi-Fi features were in FFIII DS I hope they scrap any use of it entirely.

We can keep it in this topic now, no? Anyway, thanks for the scans. It made my day. The 3D looks really good and Rosa's design is definately step up from the GBA one... She got her nose fixed. I'll add the links to the scans to the first psot, if you don't mind.

I wonder why Edward/Gilbert, Yang, and DK Cecil have MP?

Shiny arts, the graphics look tres good, but Rosa's hair in the art looks kind of too refined. I'm nitpicking here, but I always imagined her to have floaty, white - blonde curly/wavy hair.

Yeah. That's weird. Maybe their abilities like Sing, Power, and Dark now take up MP.

My only complaint is that they made Cecil's eyes blue. They were green in his battle sprites in the other versions. I liked the white hair, green eyes thing. Most fans I know considered that the trademark Lunarian look.

However, Kain made me drool. A lot. I'm such a fangirl. :love:

EDIT: I just noticed something. In the scan with DK Cecil in CGI.There's the scene where Tellah joins in the water cave. See how the text is placed in a textbox? In the other screens it isn't, ratehr placed in a subtitle-like way (PS2 FF's). Hmm, perhaps the game takes the FF CC RoF route? Voice-acting in some scenes, text in others.

I need a video.

I'm dying to see if they've fixed the tedious battles that plagued Final Fantasy III DS. The ATB system should help, but what Final Fantasy IV really needs is quick transitions. If they were smart in this area, this game will make me cry tears of joy for every second of its play time.

I've played through Final Fantasy IV enough to know the story backwards and front. I'm not going to wait an extra few months to play a game I'm anticipating this much. Besides, I'll play the English version when it comes stateside, too--provided they've cleaned up the transition times.

Looks interesting enough. I'll never get it unless it comes to a console I already have, so it's all a bit irrelevant to me really.
The character designs are interesting - the in-game graphics are familiar enough, but those 'realistic' CG artwork images are fairly outlandish. They seem to be quite big on the 'skinny men who look like girls' trend, which is a little unfortunate.
I could go on a rant about the silly and illogical armour designs, but I won't - except to say that's weird that Rosa's wearing her armour under her bodice. I guess she doesn't mind getting a few calluses from having thick leather and steel rivets on bare skin.

Still, it looks like it'll be a great game. Seems that it'll have the extra atmosphere and immersion that was lacking in the original version, thanks to the advances in sound and graphics, but without divorcing itself from its origins. The new world map is a perfect example - it looks like the old one, but with beautiful colouring and landscape features. Same goes for all the familiar dungeons and castles, too.

There is no longer any excuse not to have a DS, D.

Christmas is coming up!

And if a DS really is no your thing, but you're not afraid of emulation either, I can tell that it won't take years anymore before PCs will be able to run 3D DS games like these. Really, I was able to play the entire first dungeon of FF III DS via emulator, with only Luneth's hair missing some pieces and some lag during battles and very big lag during boss battle. Then I quit because my character was completely black on the world map and I couldn't save.

Really, a few more releases and no$gba will be able to run these DS FF games smoothly. But I didn't say anything. :D
I don't really advise emulation anyway. It's a nice way to test games and all if you're unsure to buy them, but playing a game for real on the console it was intended to is always more fun. I've played the PS FFs on my PC (with real bought copies, no ISO's) because I had no choice (wasn't allowed a PS or PS2). Now that I have a PS3, it's much more fun to replay these games with the correct controller and all. I bet the same would count for playing DS games. But still, since some people don't like looking at tiny screens all the time...

About the gripes you have with the character designs, Big D, blame Amano. The CGI models are almost completely alike to Amano's drawing. Which is nice, IMHO. :)
EDIT: Forgot to say, I have to admit this is the first time I consider Rosa to look beautiful. I mean, she's suposed to be Baron's beauty, and then the GBA port gave us that face portrait of her and... well... So, this character model of Rosa FTW.

I think you are right about the new skills Elpizo. Rosa and Rydia could never dual cast anything before. Also, Cecil could never do any music related attacks. Unless that was the Twin Harp in the screenshot.

About the ability system, I do not believe everybody will be able to use Jump, for example. IV's story focusses characters with set jobs. I do believe the main characters (whic hI consider Cecil, Kain, Rosa, Rydia and Edge because every version aside from IV Advance had those as the FInal Party) will inherit the abilities from the people who left. Maybe not all of them. But look at it like this:

If Palom and Porom and Golbez and FuSoYa can cast twin magic, why not Rydia and Rosa? Adding this ability to their command set is not a bad thing. SIng to Cecil's ability set is a bit more weird, I agree. But he's a Paladin, a sort of supporting knight or so. Using songs to power up his allies is not that strange or unheard of.

It's weird yes. But if you don't like it, I'm 99% sure this new ability system is optional. Don't let it ruin the entire gameplay section of IV DS for you. It's just that IV falls kind of short in the gameplay department IMHO. Becuase all you have to do was level up for new magic spells. Otehr jobs only had one unique ability or so. In IX, also with set jobs, you had unique commands with plenty of abilities and support abilities you could use. IV really only has the ATB going for it, some things to change it all a bit might be welcome. I'm not saying IV was bad, not at all, just saying it just might turn out to be a nice addition. And again, don't like it, don't use it. I doubt SE would force you to use this system.

I understand people like party switching more perhaps, but the only version of all 6 version released up until now was IV Advance. And while it was cool, it collided a bit with the story. The story sets Cecil, Kain, Rydia, Rosa and Edge against Zemus and the others to support them. I felt switching was a bit out of place.

Ah, I'm ranting again, my apologies. I just want to avoid "Square Enix you ruined the entire IV DS gameplay department now!" posts here. One forum to have these is bad enough. Certainly because the system is (probably) optional.

I haven't really been following the development of this game closely, unlike Dragon Quest IV, which is my most favorite RPG ever. Now I wish I did. Rosa and Yang are my most favorite characters in the game, so seeing them in all of their 3D glory makes me happy. Cecil, unfortunately, looks far too feminine for my tastes, which is a crying shame since I really like him as a main character.

I will more than likely get this game when it comes out (then again, I said the same for FFIV Advance).

Well these screenshots and info prove I'm definetly going to pick up this game. Is it sad that I'm looking forward to this more than any of SE's other projects?

The new skill system is intriguing though I'm going to say that it's probably going to be limited. I think Elpizo is right to think that the final parties skills are not inheritable but I'm going to take a step further and say that not all character skills will be inheritable (i.e. Hide, Cry, Bluff, Dark Wave, and Recall). I just wonder if we'll get some new magic and skills. Perhaps a few extra Twin magic spells...

I'm now curious to see what the summons look like but mostly, I want to see the bad guys. Where's my Elemental Fiends and Golbez fully CGI pictures?

I haven't heard any details, but adding in a new ability system seems like a good move. IV's gameplay is terribly outdated for RPGs and I think if they made something kind of like IX it could work really well. Also I hope the expansion of the story is significant since you'll need time to develop abilities and last time I completed IV in about 17 hours. I agree. I love IV, but if it's going to compete from a game play standpoint it needs to evolve. Though I don't think IV's new skill system will be very deep, I believe it should be enough to appease the newer fans who are used to having some level of customization.

I am curious to know if their might be class restrictions... somehow I don't see Rydia or Rosa making use of Yang's skills. Nor can I imagine the game allowing Paladin Cecil to be able to use Black Magic (or heaven forbid his Dark Wave attack).

Gameplay sounds intriguing, but personally I'm still more psyched about the new scenario. I recently purchased a copy of FFIV Advance and like the rest of the Advance series, the new localization has really changed the game for the better.

I'm confused about the view of battle. So how will it be? Side view like traditional game? Back view, like in III DS? Both?

But it still looks good, and the clearer pictures of Rydia in-game make me happy. Looks better now that I see it in better detail.

Yeah, I noticed that Kain is spelled Cain in the mags. I figure it was something not too far off from the whole Cefca/Kefka thing so I wouldn't think too much about it.

Anyone else thinks it's interesting that DK Cecil removes his visor from time to time while Kain doesn't? Just pointing out the symbolism;)

Eh, the more I look at these models the more I don't like them. I mean, compare those pictures of Rydia and Yang to the latest Crystal Chronicles game. The texturing doesn't look anywhere near as detailed.

Eh, maybe they'll improve it for the final game.

When I look at CC RoF's character models, than at IV's...

IV's win. More detailed, more realistic and very fitting for IV. Maybe it's because you're looking at unclear scans here, but just check out the official site. The amount of detail on, say... Paladin Cecil is quite impressive, the same goes for Rosa.

But oh well, there always has to be someone to complain, so I'm not saying anything.

Yeah, the official does give a better impression of what the designs will look like in game. The models are impressive from a design perspective but they just don't seem to have a whole load of definition. They don't really seem to have put as much thought into lighting/shading as the more cellshaded-esk CC designs, which makes the detail harder to decipher.

Yes, that's Fabul. Apparently, when you open the menu, you can see something like the thoughts of the character currently leading your party (you remember you could choose who you walk around with).

Something like talking with the sub-characters in FF III.

I believe in those screen, Rosa comments about Fabul looking old or something, and Edward wonders if he can become strong. That's what they translated on gamespot, anyway.

I hate myself. I've spoiled it by looking at pictures of adult Rydia. I feel dirty.
Although in the Video Elpizo posted three posts up, The party was Kain, Cecil, Rosa, Cid and Child Rydia. I'm guessing that it was just because it was a tech demo thingy kinda. If it's not just a tech demo thingy then that means that Rydia stays as a child for longer. Although it looked like she was about to Summon Leviathan. However I may have just not been looking closely and it may have been Adult Rydia, though if that's the case then they must be including the ability to change party members again. Thoughts, Ideas? DISCUSS!!

The party set-up was just for the TGS demo. The Mist Cave was also swapped with the Antlion Cave for this purpose.

Gracias for that. I agree, the "Theme of Love" sounds great. The other two sound very nice as well, I can't wait to hear "Golbeza, Clad in Dark", "The Dreadful Fight", and "Dancing Calcobrena" sound.

It sounds like FMV background music. I can't imagine the actual overworld track being that fast-paced.

That's what I was thinking. It also goes together pretty well.

It is quite fast. But the overworld music is still soft so it doesn't sound that awkward.

I like the new adult Rydia design more than I can possibly express. It's got so much in common with the way I imagined her to be (and drew her) that I'm amazed.

The music sounds great, but I agree with Kish, it sounds too cinematic to be in-game music. I'd guess it's from the opening cinema or something.

I'm excited.

The second screen is a nice GCI image of DK Cecil and Rosa that makes me dare to hope for FMV in teh game, not just an intro. The third screen is a nice look of Edge and the party just before they fight Rubicante (the Lord himself not vissible, alas). The last two are Yang and Rydia in all their CGI glory.

I'm still amazed by the character models. Both CGI and in-game, they look great. Gotta love Rydia and Rosa most, though.

Yang looks fantastic. He looks ferocious, dynamic and amazing...I love the way they specifically detailed his whole character model, it's truly beautiful and overwhelming, same with Rosa, Dark Cecil and Rydia.

Wow. Those screenshots are really awesome. They even showed Edge this time.

Now they just need to show FuSoYa.

Porom is really cute. Palom is cute, too, but he resembles a clown doll I once had.

I'm just glad Palom's puffy cheeks have been preserved from the SNES version.

DAMN!!! the Whale rising, that's crazy... but all the scenes, including ones in the previous video all show different scenes, so is it just going to be one long intro of everything?

They should really knock off this compilation FMV at the beginning nonsense, already. If they're going to go out of their way to animate all these scenes they need to just weave them into the game where they belong. That's a pet peeve of mine. You'd think they'd want to avoid doing things that make the game seem more like "just a remake" and less like a fresh new game.

Sticking high-end FMV cut scenes in a game whose real-time visuals are of such disparate quality just makes for a disjointed experience. That developers began to realize this towards the end of the PS1 era (starting with Metal Gear Solid) is a good thing.

Reaching beautiful FMV sequences always gave me a sense of progression and accomplishment. As different as the visual quality may be, it rarely ever made any well paced game feel disjointed to me. There's nothing like a good FMV ending that goes places that the in-game engine just couldn't. Final Fantasy VIII is a perfect example of this.

I have to go with Necronopticous on this one. For in-game cutscenes with a great disparity between real-time graphics to make the game feel disjointed, it would have be hugely disparate or simply done bad.

There are many games which were able to do it well, most prominently the square releases on PS1. Looking at IVDS's ingame graphics, I have to say it wouldn't make it feel disjointed at all. All the FMVs have been amazing so far and I believe they would greatly magnify the impact of the story on the player if they were integrated.

They could just have, you know, used a bigger cart like Mistwalker did for ASH, a game that's also filled with voice acting and FMVs, on the DS. Sure, would be more expensive for the gamers to buy, but FF IV is a fan favorite in Japan, people will buy it anyway, regardless of the price.

If they are only are going to do one FMV then I would prefer no FMV at all. It gives the player wrong expectations. I would have loved some FMVs in FF III DS, and I knwo some occasions where it would greatly help the game. But instead we got a beautiful but still pretty useless intro FMV. FF IV DS is a highly story driven game and by the looks of the entire game, it's going as far as rival FF VIII and IX IMHO. In-game FMVs would be a really welcome thing and make me fondly remember the first time I played FF IX, my first 3D FF and also the first 3D RPG and Playstation game I ever played, albeit on my PC with ePSXe 1.5.2

I'll never forget that moment with that beautiful opening FMV of FF IX. Having something likewise on my DS but with FF IV would be a moment just as memorable. Instead, we get another beautiful but useless intro FMV that makes all those great CGI versions of the characters go to waste. Bad move, SE. At least the directors of Revenant Wings knew better.

But I'm all for FMVs, if nothing else because they're beautiful. I highly appreciated all the FMVs in old Square games, because they marked reaching an important part of the story in the game, and because I loved to see the characters done in high quality. For me, the more the better, unless they slow down gameplay too much - which, I believe, is not going to happen, because of the limitations of the DS card.

The DS carts actually have the potential to hold considerable amounts of memory, as Elpizo mentioned, ASH is going to use an even bigger cart than most games. I really don't think fmvs would have too much of a limitation on the rest of the game.

I think so far they can hold up to 2GB's in size, which is a hell of a lot of space for a DS game (pretty much the same size as the Playstation FF games). Oh and by the way, they get to work with lower resolutions, which means they have even more room than your typical 4-disc PSX Final Fantasy.

By the way, this looks incredible, I can't wait to get it.

It was revealed in the developpers blog today that the voice-acting can be switched-off, the cut-scenes can be skipped but can also be rewatched with a theatre-option in the game.

the use of the camera for cut scenes looks great... hopefully the battles are as well done as the storytelling promises to be.

It was also good to hear the battle theme kick up for the yang scene....

Agreed, the battle theme still sounds good:)

Man, I can't wait for this game to come out, and for a good DS emulator and a ROM to appear :D This game just looks so cool, so nice. So far, I love every moment I've seen of it. ^^ Even the lack of FMVs during the playthrough won't ruin my impression, I think, because of the nicely done cutscenes.

Those videos are awesome. I really like the new versions of the FFIV songs.

What I'm really hoping for eventually is the translation of the lyrics to the Theme of Love Song. (or even better having the lyrics of that song translated in the English Version)

Here's a new Creator's Voice whateverish, all in Japanese, so no good for those of us who can't understand Japanese. Howeve, this site contains many videos of the game, including Golbez' grand entrance in Fabul, battle footage, naming way (he can still change names it seems) and other stuff. You can also hear the in-game music in the videos, so it's worth to check it all out.

It's interesting that bosses have a different battle-view than normal random encounters...

There's links in the texts. It's easy to see, they are yellow and have a grey box in front of them with a play-button on it.

Too bad that I couldn't understand a thing they said... but the voices were great :)
I hope English dub voices will be as good as Japanese... Or that there'll be an option for Japanese voicing with English subtitles. Now that would be great :)

The best news here is that they are introducing more variety in the ability system. One of the FFIV's main problems was that the class system was complete inflexible. Combined with the fact that you end up using the same 5 characters at the end no matter what, there wasn't a whole lot of variety when it came to stratagy. Even if you still can't change party members at the end (which is a little strange since they allowed it in the GBA version, abet in a half-assed manner) if you can choose which characters inherit which abilities it should substantially increase the replay value.

There's a sequel coming out.

I transcribed Ai no Theme's lyrics in Japanese (romaji) while listening to it on YouTube, and I know only a little Japanese. It's likely that I made mistakes, though! =O
