This will be the final single-round thread, we're getting into the closing stages now! Some nice tough matchups for us from here on in... a few movies have caused some major upsets and managed to edge their way into the final 16 alongside the big guns, and here's what we're voting on this time around. Return of the King or Return of the Jedi? British comedy takes on British comedy in the third matchup, which will prove interesting.

Holy crap, Empire Strikes Back got knocked out by Return of the Jedi?! A New Hope I might've understood, but Return of the Jedi? I also feel that Shaun of the Dead is somewhat overrated these days. It's a fantastic film, but far from the best British comedy ever. Also, where's Life of Brian? :( Raiders of the Lost Ark better win this now!

While I definitely agree that Shawshank is better than Shaun of the Dead, I personally find the latter to be better than the Monty Python movies, which if made today wouldn't be as much of a hit. Just a matter of cult classic vs. cult classic, really.

I reckon it was rather evil making Gladiator face off against Pulp Fiction.

Why? Gladiator was good. Pulp Fiction was not.

Ah, but when it comes to pure comedy films, greatness is measured in popularity. By 'pure comedy' I mean 'films where the comedy is the main point of the movie, rather than the story'. A comedy film where the story takes priority over the comedy would be something more like Forrest Gump.

Shaun of the Dead, as I've said previously, is just as good as Life of Brian, which would not be as big a hit as it once was if it were released today by people who weren't already world-famous from a TV series. Not even close. Although the singing was a bonus for sure.

Of course, as far as I'm concerned, neither deserve to have made it to the last sixteen, but they've had a good run and have beaten some pretty incredible movies, possibly down to the votes of people who haven't seen movies such as Shawshank Redemption or else people who simply prefer comedy to drama.

The only movie I've not seen of the final sixteen is V for Vendetta, but I'll get around to that someday. I'm slowly working my way through the top 250 IMDb films. :)

Remember a few rounds ago when I voted for movies I had never seen? I vote based on what I know about the movie, not 'whether I saw them before lol shawn of the dead > citizen kane' (actually that was a false comparison since I haven't seen SOTD)

If people vote for movies they've watched you just have a graph of information of some random statistics :P

If! Sadly, I can't tell such things for certain, although I know I have on a few occasions. That's mostly down to me being the host and wanting to encourage voting, though, I'll admit.

I've seen Citizen Kane and didn't think it was that great. Maybe I'll watch it again someday, because I can't remember much of it now. I just remember thinking "What? That's it?"

Shaun of the Dead is as good as Life of Brian? *splutters with disbelief*

Life of Brian is one of the best comedies ever made, it's easily the best of the Monty Python films, and it's even more relevant today than ever before with the points it makes about the idiocies of organised religion.

Agreed.

You can argue it all you like, but simply some people enjoy certain films more than others. Life of Brian certainly made me laugh at points, but not as much as many other films. As for pointing out everything that's wrong about organised religion, no, not really. Dogma does that a thousand times better.
