I really like Super Princess Peach.
All you need is Contra 4.
Go with the Ace Attorney series.
I don't respect you if you don't get Pokémon Diamond or Pearl.
Well, to get Mario games out of the way, Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart DS are great titles. Mario VS. Donkey Kong is another good one.
Try out the Castlevania games if you can find them. They're great adventure titles.
Star Fox DS is good in my eyes, but a lot of people really hate it.
Edit: Oh, stupid me. You're already getting Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart. Well, get New Super Mario Bros. as well!
Elite Beat Agents, of course. :P
Ace Attorney, and of course FF IV when it's out.
Elite Beat Agents, Yoshi's Island DS, FF III and IV (but also V and VI for the GBA, remember that you have also the entire library of the GBA at your disposal).
Avoid like the plague: Harvest Moon unless you're an obsessive completist of the series, Puzzle Bobble Double Shot.

IF you're into Strategy RPG's theres always Luminious Arc. Great fun, all your units are unique and have their preset jobs, though if you like building that kind of stuff up yourself you might not like it.
I like it that way though. :p
Final Fantasy Fables Chocobo Tales
I think this game deserves more attention than it gets.Sure,it may not have the best story ever created but it is really fun to play.The game is full of minigames (and microgames) and most of them are very addictive to play.Some of them are easy but some of them are viciously hard!
It's also a nice game to take with you in the tube and play a couple of minigames until you reach your destination.
Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Worth a good 7+ hours
Doki Doki Majo Shinpan and Duel Love are the only games you need.
Just recalled another game that I don't think was mentioned here.
Lifesigns Surgical Unit.
Those who enjoyed the Ace Attorney series and Trauma Center may find it interesting.
Warioware Touched was also a fun little addiction (no relation to Lifesigns).
