Screen resolutions

I decided I will make a website ^_^ I'm typically used to designing for 800 x 600 resolutions and higher, but last time I seriously made websites was back in 2005. I sort of want to do 1024+ resolution size designing now.

So does anyone still use 800 x 600?

1440 x 900.

Lunar still uses 800x600 because he's a nub.

1024 x 768 is the low-end standard now.

Actually, I have a very old laptop that is 1024x768. Imagine that!

Oh and I use 1024. If I use 800, I won't be able to se all of my desktop icons (there's like too many to count)

800x600 is much to small...practically the default resolution for Windows XP if one does not have proper video drivers. You would have to try to find a screen that small.

1280x800 for widescreen and 1024x768 are good normal baseline resolutions now.

I use 1360x768, but it's not very common for a computer resolution. :p

1920x1200, laptop :D And yeah, no-one should be using 800x600 these days on a typical PC, although I can't say for those ultra-portables around now :p

I use 800x600 for the TV attached to my computer.

If you're not a company, a web professional or the like who has an image to keep up, you don't have to worry about it. However, it never hurts. There are still low-res screens out there, and Internet use via mobile phone and other handheld devices is increasing rapidly. Besides, tons of people don't have their browser windows maximized, which might actually bring the actual available size closer to 800x600 than you might think.

If you know some CSS, it's not too hard to pull a few tricks that makes the design adapt to the browser window's size automatically. Here are some common resolutions, if you want to delve deeper into the subject.

I'm using 1024 by 768 at the moment. Don't know what Daniel's using. :mog:

1680x1050 on one monitor and on my secondary I use 1440x900.

1600x1200@75Htz, i like to have screenspace for several applications at once... no one has used 800x600 in ages, no one that i know anyway except for the occasional newbie's who have just bought their first computer and don't know any better...

1280 x 1024.

I don't think I've seen an 800 x 600 in years. :p

I made a fluid layout with a 1024 base, but it's going to look so bad on like... 1400+ resolutions because the text is just gonna go all across the screen. xD

I dunno now. Do you guys browse with the browser not at max size or something?

I know, but I wanted the text area to expand with the browser. I spent all afternoon coding it into a fluid layout. Bahh I'll just make it a set width *dies* So much easier. xD But less spiffy.

just set it to like 1200 px xD and then have plenty of margins and paddings and then it'll be all spiffy up to that width and slightly lessthereafter!

Oh I get it ^_^ max-width rocks. Is there any way I can get it to do that with IE? :( I already set width to 100% so I can't do another width: setting.

Edit: Wait, what am I saying. My width is not at 100%, it's at 90, and I don't need that anymore for firefox now that I have max-width. *thinks*

For your audience I reckon you can go larger and forget 800x600. We're currently redesigning our site (at work) and making it a bit larger.

I think mainly people working in banks and schools have tiny screens :p

To emulate max-width (or max-height, min-width or min-height with some modification) for IE, you can use:

width:expression( document.body.clientWidth > 500 ? 500 : "auto" );

Where both 500's are the max-width you want to use. "expression()" is IE-specific and will be ignored by other browsers. This means it's browser proprietary code, which is generally frowned upon, but readability goes before code perfection in my opinion.

I'm browsing this page in 240x320.

1280 x 800 on my laptops, and 1280 x 1024 with my desktop.

@Rantzien: Thanks, that works but... when I add that in, it overrides the max-width I have for Firefox. >.< How do I make it work for both browsers?

I've always heard that 800x600 is more of a courtesy for people who don't browse in maximised windows.

I use a 1440 x 900 resolution but I am currently browsing in a 1300x720 window (just the website not the nav bar or anything). However I change my browser size (width especially) quite frequently depending on what other programs I have up and which sites I'm viewing.

My biggest issue when I was making a website was Mac vs. PC. I had the whole thing absolutely fantastic looking on both Safari and Firefox on my Mac, but when I switched over to my PC, IE and Firefox had their own issues. I was running up and down stairs to switch between computers for a long time. Who says there's no such thing as geeks exercising?

Now I just need to fix one more thing in IE... so let's say I have a table and I set a height and width for the <TD>. Then, with no cellpadding or cellspacing and div-right and top and all that good stuff at 0... I put an image that's the exact same size as the table in the <TD>. How do I get it so that IE doesn't add extraneous borders?

And ah Kes, websites look different on Macs and PCs? o_O

Only in the sense that the browsers are different. Like I mentioned in the browser thread, I'm pretty sure that even if you use Firefox on all your OSs it will have at least subtle differences, but it's been a while.

border-style:none;
for the table or the image, depending on which has the border.

800x400 and 1280x1024, also you suck JoJo!

FInally don't forget to set up a second stylesheet which you can use for lower res', bug me on MSN sometime and I'll show you what I mean :p

Work: 1600x1200

1024 x 768. Anything else looks weird on my compy.

My screen made a resoultion to quit smoking this year but it didnt turn out too well :(

Anyway i use 1024 * 768 but dont feel you have to design a website for this resolution just because everyone uses it. It depends on your website. If you dont need that many pixels then just go with 800 * 600. Pick the one that leaves you with less clutter but not too much blank space.
