Guys, there is a room in Otacon streaming live Metal Gear Online gameplay all over the world. Now, I was just in there and in a few minutes there will be maintenance so it probably won't be up. But before and probably after is all live.
So, what do you guys think about the gameplay in Metal Gear Online?
Metal Gear Online is great! I can understand why it wouldnt be everyones cup of tea but for me its probably one of the best online games I have ever played. Now if Konami could just sort out their damn MGO shop I would be a very happy bunny!
Metal Gear Online isn't so great. MGS4's gameplay isn't suited for online play. Plus Konami are ripping you off by having to buy extra characters, which for a game which isn't great to begin with, it just feels like a scam.
Although MGS4 didn't even need online so it's still a nice extra.
Whats everyones PS3 tags so we can arrange a few games?

I play it a lot, its fun but has its issues. Firstly, there are way too many team death matches. The people should put more variety into it.
Also, the free version only has a few maps, which get old quite quickly. But the upgraded version aint worth the cash IMO.
But other than that, its very addictive.
In all honesty, it wanted me to register for a second ID so I just didn't bother with it. xD

I'll have to check out that room, I think MGO is great, I've gotten my Assault Rifle skill to level 3. As far as gameplay goes, it really emulates alot of stuff in Metal Gear well. Pulling off a CQC grab-and use as a human shield on a couple of enemies is exhilarating. The cardboard box is a surprisingly effective technique. There's so many different play styles and it's really fun once you start getting the hang of it.
Yeah, MGO is terrible. It's impossible to even get the damn thing running. And when you finally do, thats when the problems start. MGS4 controls were not made for online shooting. The user base is retarded and can't realize that you're supposed to utilize stealth. And a few of the skills are retardedly powerful (Snpier+ 3 LOL). And then Konami wants to charge me just to have a second character? Forget it.
Its not bad, theres a lot of people on there who really get on my nerves though, like when i first started i went in the beginner rooms and theres still people who wipe you out constantly before you even get a chance to pull the trigger:mad2:
It's alright, but just cannot compare to CoD4 online, so I still play that
I enjoy MGO once in a while. I'm not that much of a die-hard online gamer so it's great for just a couple of hours a week. I love the maps, some of them are really diverse like Urban Ultimatum for example. I usually play Team Sneak (very original game mode imo) or Team Deathmatch.
MGO is a perfect example of why Japanese developers know little to nothing about online games.
Team sneak is the best.
My abilities are usually:
Sixth sense (lv2)
Assault Rifle (lv2) - lvl 3 takes up too much space
CQC (lv1)
And I have no idea how good I am, because it automatches people. Only problem is, half the time I'm number one since Im paired up against people who are too easy. Anyway, its my first online game, so it might actually be lame compared to others. But it did get pretty good reviews (in the 80s)
I don't think they necessarily did anything wrong with MGO itself but the registration process was god awful. I couldn't even get into the beta because it was so screwed up. Other than that, the issues with MGO are more to do with the style of gameplay that MGS uses rather than how they turned it into an online game. Anyway, I do think some of the typical MGS elements in MGO work well. The other day I rescued a teammate who was being kept in a CQC chokehold by giving the enemy a headshot from a roof. Never done that in an online game before.
^ Done that before!!! That's one thing I really love about MGO, it's the only multiplayer online game that I can say facilitates moments that are truly "cinematic".
In Midtown Maelstrom, the alley with the building you can go in, I would snipe on the bridge, then HANG off of the ledge so that the enemy wouldn't be able to see if I was even there, although you still get to see who's coming. Then I would pop back up and snipe them.
That's another aspect of Metal Gear Solid that translated perfectly. MGS is all about spotting the enemy before they see you, and adjusting to the situation. That's one thing that 3rd person shooters accomplish that FPS can't - being able to see around corners, beneath obstacles, or HIDDEN IN A CARDBOARD BOX - all without them being able to see you.
I hate goddamn snipers. The good ones are soo annoying.
I also use the assault rifle. Snipers are for pussies. ;)
With an assault rifle in hand, I reckon there are few that can match me in a 'fair' fight. But of course, I have my own tricks to play. The most obvious being the sneak behind the enemy camp and gun them all down in a line. I once did that to about five people just straight.
MGO is quite fun. I'm level 8 in MGO. I'm just trying to get the Foxhound emblem >_>
My tips:
Wall hiding
----------
One of the great things about MGO is that when you hide behind a wall, (move around by using your R3 button), you will have better sight surrounding everywhere else around that wall, checking if there are enemies or not. Those enemies won't be able to see you.
Since I'm offensive, I usually jump to each wall, making sure there are no enemies, then I move on.
Hiding behind a wall is advantageous. When you hide behind a wall, and there's an enemy going past you, all you gotta do is:
1) Aim for the enemy's head.
2) Then move out of the wall, and shoot his/her head fast. You have better chance of surviving after the kill, since that enemy cannot tell if you were there or not.
When you hide behind a wall, don't use the Triangle function because it's ineffective. If you use the function and shoot an enemy via a wall, there's a good chance that the enemy will see you faster before you move out. Aiming and shooting an enemy while hiding a wall beforehand (without the Triangle function) is much more effective.
Enemy tag

From my exp, there are a lot of rooms that have this function enabled. This method can be useful as a sniper.
Enemy tag is when your crosshair is on an enemy, his/her tag will display. This is an indicator to show that if you shoot him/her while the tag is still displaying, there's a 99% chance that the enemy will recieve bullet damage from you. Assuming a room has this function enabled, if the tag doesn't display and you shoot, he/she won't recieve bullet damage from you. Why? Because your crosshair is not exactly on the enemy. Basically, use this method when you always aim for head, you aim for head, tag displays, shoot quickly, boom dead! This can be useful as a sniper.
Skills

While I don't use other skills, I use Narc lvl 3, Monomania lvl 3 and Assault lvl 2. With Monomania lvl 3 and Narc lvl 3 combined can be crazy. This combination allows you to see enemies much better than before. You can also SOP link, so that your team mates will see the enemies' as well.
Buttons and settings
--------------------
You should set the sensitivity to 10, don't worry, you will get used to it. This allows you to aim enemies faster.
Change the setting to ''Recall'' for changing items in your L3 and R3, Recall allows you to change faster. Just press L3 or R3 gently, your item will be changed with another item faster.
If an enemy is shooting at you out of no where, just don't stand. The enemy will kill you faster if you stand, so intead, just use your card box or use X (roll) which can evade the bullets, run and hide or whatever.
For me, there is only one disadvantage in MGO which is spawn camping.
It sucks, however, if you're a good player, you shouldn't have any problem killing them. Run to places where there are no enemies in your base, giving you a better chance of not getting killed again. Either do that or just quit the room, simple as that.
Just got tot level 3 just now and upgraded my sniper+ to 2, love sniping! I'm getting quite good at using handguns aswell. The other day I say some dude pretty much pwn everyone with the Desert Eagle which was awesome since no-one really uses handguns as their main weapon.
Anyway, would be interesting to see what your favourites are, like guns, maps etc.
I really like Midtown Maelstrom, although for some reason I tend to get personal best scores on Ambush Alley. SVD and GRS combo ftw! Oh btw, what are your kill/death ratio's like? Mine's 225 - 165-ish :choc:
Midtown Maelstrom is my favourite map as well.
m4 and ak are my favourite guns.
Serapy, those are alot of good tips which I use as well. Definately the around-the-corner pop out for headshot is one of the most effe ctive ways to get kills. Like I said earlier, the seeing enemies before they see you aspect of MGS is really important in MGO.
Ambush Alley's probably my favorite map, as my guy has mostly black, sometimes I mix in dark green on the holster/vest, so I blend in pretty good there. It's also interesting how camoflage plays into the game, how different colors allow players to blend in better on different maps. AK is my favorite gun (Assault Rifle+ Level 3), on Drebin points I use the G3A3, I've found it to get headshots like crazy.
Serapy, did you say you use Narc lvl3 and Monomania lvl3 at the same time? I thought you can only have skills of a combined score of 4?
A few skills like Monomania and grenade toss etc only take up 1 space even at level 3.
I generally use Knife lvl 3 and CQC lvl 1 for throat cutting goodness ^^
MGO's gameplay is a playground for people who like to do very exploitive things. Knocking somebody out and laying porn mags/sleep gas mines all over them (just to piss them off) is one of the more obvious examples.
^Lol, that pisses me off. Especially if its during something like capturing bases.
I hate people who cut my throats, but thankfully I usually headshot them first. Unless if they sneak up really well behind me.
Anyway, good tips. For those using Assault rifles (my expertise - I suck at everything else, but its good enough to make me come top a lot), my main tip would be HEADSHOT. Seriously, its ridiculous how much more damage you do with one headshot.
Also, never play a game with lag. It ruins everything. And whenever possible, never face a fair fight. If you spot a bunch of enemies, and they spot you, you know what they'll do. They'll cover the immediate area, ready to blast the hell outta you if you appear. So dont be the macho man and walk out. Instead, try and sneak round and gun them down from behind. If thats not possible, just wait round the corner, and hope that they get overly curious. If you want, you can even place a trap.
We should get some EoFF deathmatches going or something...

When you kill higher level players, you will gain EXP to level up. However, EXP is not visible, but you can pretty tell. Just play good, and there's a good chance that you will level up, basically.Quote:

If you use M4 with grip and want to use narc lvl 3 and Monomania lvl 3, go for it! With the Assault skill, it doesn't make a big difference when it comes to accuracy, anyway.
I'm addicted to those skills :( I need to level up CQC, sniper skill, or something else. Actually I'll start with CQC first.

Like I've said, I really like MGO alot, and it's a blessing that Konami was actually able to make a good online experience of MGS, especially after what I feel was not that good at all in MGS3, but their handling of the online system was atrocious. I mean, you need 4 ID's to play in the championships: PSN ID, Konami ID, Game ID, and a gamebattles.com login. Damn.

When I played this, I don't think I ever had that happen. Of course, I obsessively use the camera to check my surroundings, and shoot into every cardboard box I see. Also, Bolivar Sniper Nests are hard to do. Only a fool snipes from teh ground. And an intelligent sniper puts sleep gas mines at the top of the ladder of their vantage point. I used sleep gas because it was far quiter than a claymore, and since a claymore isn't lethal like that, I'd still get points for the knock out.
Thats because not THAT many people use CQC or throat slits since it takes a while of levelling up those skills to be any good at it.Quote:

And sniping from the ground can be effective, if you're good (not me).
It does'nt really matter whether you're sniping from the ground or from higher ground. There are enough places to get some easy picks throughout every map, although it sometimes depends on which side of the map you start.
Being a stealth game, I didn't anticipate sprinting through it anyway. The core idea behind MGO is brilliant but the execution of the skills, and the way they used MGS4's controls killed it for me.Quote:

I've just discovered a new tip today. Basically, when you're behind a box (the wood crate ones) and aim at an enemy through the box, the enemy's tag will display. Same applies to when an enemy is behind a box! The former method is useful against snipers who are aiming in sight. They cannot see you because you're behind a box! Just shoot away through the wood crate!
The latter method is useful against people who are hiding behind boxes.
I'm not sure if it's considered as an exploit, because your bullets can penetrate enemies through a box, even though the enemy tag will display when in fact that you cannot see the enemy (directly).
Is it just me or is it way too hard for Snake to win a sneaking mission? I've never played a round as him, but I've never witnessed anyone collecting enough dogtags to win.
^Ive played about 10 times as Snake, and won twice.
Another time, I was just about to pick up my third tag when some idiot shoots me in the head.
It can be very hard if the people are good and there are loads of them. If its only 4 or 5 a side, then it can be quite easy.
Its also really hard to do on Gronzyi Griad (or w/e) and Bloodbath, but easier to do it on Urban Ultimatum and the other, grey one. (forgotten its name)

So I bought the Gene expansion and played survival this past weekend, and I gotta say it was pretty fun. Always having a 6 on 6 match for tons of reward points, knowing who's doing good and who's not, it was pretty great. Although I wish they would open up a second night, because Im not really trying to play Metal Gear every saturday night.
I have the expansion as well. Survival sometimes isn't fun. Before I was level 5, and I've tried to join random teams, usually, they have kicked me because my level was too low. That was stupid and annoying and I have kind of lost respect in joining random teams. However, I can understand the leader's decision for kicking low level people because with low level people, they are likely to lose against teams with higher level people, but still...Quote:

I've just lost two levels (was 8, now 6) because I was enjoying leveling skills. Now I'm done with leveling them, and I've got a level back. Whee~
^ yeah, that's a problem I had, not to mention the fact that I was on losing teams, so I was losing levels, then had to go to lower level teams, so begins a spiral of failure! I still had a great time though, to me I enjoy just playing right-size matches at a fast pace, although I wouldn't mind the extra reward points for winning.
I've been floating between levels 4-6 and its hard to keep up because there's not really alot of higher level servers in the Freebattle lobbies. Once I hit level 5, there's maybe 2-4 yellow servers so it's not long before I'm back to 4...

Since I live in Europe, my IGN is Serady and its clan is Horizon. If you live in NA, then I don't think we can play together because I think the servers of NA and EU are different :(. However, I'm not sure, there may be a way to log into the NA side from here, but I doubt it.
I have 3450 reward points, I'm thinking about saving more points for a black beret. I dunno yet.

And those berets are craaaaazy expensive, but it's a status symbol i guess. I'm just trying to get a real cool camo set, get my swagger up.

Yes, play in some higher level rooms, and no, you won't lose a level. If the players are higher level and killed you, then you won't lose any level. If you do well against them, you will gain a level. It's like this, if a lower level person has killed you couple of times, you will lose a level. However, if you keep getting killed by higher level people, it's not worth it to play any further as it may mess up your online stat (K/D and W/L ratios).Quote:

Automatching is great, I personally prefer it sometimes because it creates varied matches with just the right amount of people and no lag (sometimes, but rare). The only problem with automatching is that it always gets characters lower to your level in addition to ones higher, so if there's alot of characters lower than you, it might not be worth it since your level can only go down. You get 50 reward points for every match you lose, and 100 Reward points for winning your first match. If you can manage to win successive matches in a row with that one team, the amount of reward points you get will dramatically increase, up to 500 i think. Basically you're in a lobby where you can browse teams, how many players they have, what the average level is, whether they're casual/serious, etc. You can leave a team any time you want and join a new one. All the while, MGO is displaying who has just won, and how many matches. You need the GENE expansion to play, and it uses all of the new maps and all game modes so that each encounter with a new squad is different. Basically, at the end you've accumulated so many reward points that you can then go to the reward shop and trick out your character however you want.

Vivisteiner, I usually play in the 'Free Battle' server and I think it's pretty good. A lot of people usually go there, especially higher level players. I find Auto Matching a bit pointless, because there aren't a lot of lvl 4+ people who play in there, most of them play in the other servers like Free Battle.
My titles so far: I had to go through my introductory "Sloth" (headshot susceptible) period starting out, then moved on to "Water Bear" (high survival rate). However, I actually haven't had any current title for quite some time now. I'd like to be FOXHOUND, but apparently you need a high kill:death ratio which I don't think I'd ever be able to get... unless I just lurked in level 1-3 free battle servers.
One more thing about lobbies - if you get the Gene expansion, you get 5 points per round (10 points per match) for the Reward Shop for playing in the Expansion Automatching lobbies. I'm usually there for the reasons I stated about automatching that I like, plus it builds a little community, I get to know all the people that I'll be seeing Survival night.
News Flash: in the latest Dengeki Playstation, Kojima Productions revealed a few details for the upcoming MEME Expansion pack:
3 Maps:
1) Snow Map - People are speculating its Shadow Moses or the snow map from the original MGO.
2) Jungle Map - apparently they stated it would have a color pallete similar to Svyatogornyj, so we could expect a Snake Eater map.
3) Map with a ruin in the Middle - most are expecting it to be "Ghost Factory" from the original MGO.
New Character - said to have a real killer ability, many are thinking its Raiden.
New Game Mode - no details, but its supposed to "blow your mind"... I'm hoping for a co-op Metal Gear experience, but that's just something I'd like to see.
^Oooh, nice. I might get that one if its not too expensive. I'm assuming that if I get Meme, I'll get all the stuff in Gene automatically as well. (I havent bought Gene)

The snow map, huh? Buy EVERY snow cameo you can find off the Reward Shop! Now that might be a huge advantage towards the Snow map!
Same goes for the Jungle Map! Buy jungle cameos! Lol.
Yesterday I was level 4 for a couple of rounds, but now I'm back to 3 =/ Got my sniper+ to master though!
It's not that bad, Pete. Most of the time, I have dropped my level but later on I got them back. I'm pretty sure you will too, just try to be better! You need to know the maps well, like where enemies may be, etc. That's the key. When you know a map well, then you probably know where to hide, giving you a better chance to become better.
Oh, I've just found out that if I buy the NA version of MGS4, it will allow me to play the NA online. I would have to buy it, though...
Another piece of advice I would give is to always switch your camera view over your soldier, if you're coming around a corner which is to your right, make sure the camera is over your left shoulder, and vice versa. that way you can take cover faster, aim with a little cover, and just aim at your enemy easily.
That's a good point about the camo, Serapy. Getting a headstart and then being able to pwn everyone when those new maps get released!
Also, when you have fire on you, just use a cardboard box, after getting out of your box, you no longer have fire on you. :p
