I now officially hate FFIV DS

For the following reasons:

-Every boss is impossibly hard
-Rydia doesn't learn Meteor until level 80
-Every enemy has an incredibly annoying counterattack move
-Many enemies have an overpowered non-magical attack (scorch, anyone?).
-Cecil's Dark ability has been nerfed--it no longer hits all enemies
-For that matter, EVERYTHING has been nerfed
-You can no longer play as anyone at the end of the game, and the Lunar Ruins stuff has all been omitted

Am I the only one who feels this way? I don't mind a challenge, but when a game is too difficult, it simply ceases to be entertaining.

Nope, just you.

Besides, the Lunar Ruins and getting to play as all of the different characters in the end was a GBA thing only. The other four versions or so didn't have that.

As for Dark being nerfed, in the FFII SNES version, Cecil didn't even have Dark.

As for playing through a game a second time, if you like the game enough, you will. (I know I did.)

If a boss is 'impossibly hard', go back and levelgrind. A few levels do make a difference.

Counterattack moves are common in any version of the game, later on.


Basically, the only true annoyance I see in this is that Rydia doesn't learn Meteor until lv. 80. But then again, at that point, you should be able to kill anything...

I know only the GBA had the lunar ruins. The augment system was made to replace that. This isn't really a major complaint of mine, I guess.

FFII SNES didn't have dark, but it also didn't have recall, salve, or ATB. FFII US was not very truthful to the original in terms of gameplay.

I've beaten plenty of the bosses without level grinding. I'm in the lunar subterrane right now, and everyone is somewhere between level 66 and 68. It's still too hard.

I know counterattacks are common. I've seen them in other versions, too. But this time, the counterattacks are BRUTAL. I can't think of an example off the top of my head, but the bosses are already too hard to begin with. How long does the game expect me to level grind? Once again, this makes the game much less fun. Too much level grinding ruins it for me.

Well, the Lunar areas are supposed to be hard...

One of the major critiques/praises of the Final Fantasy series is that it's difficulty is set up so that minimal level-grinding is required. Perhaps they chose a different direction with this game in requiring more level grinding. With so many versions of the game out, it's likely that they geared this game to the more hard-core gamer as there are plenty of other versions that cater to those that aren't keen on the increased difficulty.

Also, are you spamming the attack/magic(black) commands to try and obliterate your enemies? If so, try to use more of the support skills and magics to compliment your battle strategy.

I like Dark better in this one. Almost every boss is by itself. And who uses skills on random encounters at that point in the game.

Meteor is kinda terrible anyway.

The enemies were programmed to counterattack certain actions in every version of the game. It's just now the game outright tells you it's a counter.

Yes, now it hits one enemy for extreme damage, even more so when hitting a weakness.

GBA version only.

-Squeenix has the gall to think you'll play the game through a second time (okay, that's not really an argument).

Like Momiji said, it's just for people who enjoy the game enough to play it again. And, to be fair, the optional bosses almost require you to play through two or three times to get the augments necessary to defeat them.

I would do that, but it would drain me dry of MP. Any way to get around that without killing my ether supply?

Unless you really want to grind that high you don't need Rydia to know Meteor. Many enemies just counter it anyway. My Rydia did not learn Meteor. Bahamut ftw.

You couldn't play as everyone in the original. That was a special addition to the GBA just like augments are to this one.

I'll be playing through it again for EoFF Plays next month. I intend to play both the DS and then GBA version for speed completion. Sometimes there's also a "SNES on a SNES" completion so I might need to do that, too.

Also, FFIIUS did have ATB just so you know. ;)

They counter EVERYTHING. There have been battles in which nearly every action I take is countered. It eventually becomes very annoying.

Either run away or fight these enemies and get to higher levels.

I do run away from the battles with the non-magical attacks, but it kind of damages my EXP gain.

Dark was useful for large groups of enemies. I am a dark knight enthusiast, so if I only have a dark knight for three hours, I don't want that dark knight to be so completely different from most other dark knights in the series.

That wasn't a very good argument, and I've deleted it. Especially considering that I'm going to be doing New Game+ too... guess I'm a glutton for punishment.

I don't hate FFIV DS per se... I just have a love-hate relationship with it. It's a good port, but it can get really frustrating at times.

The game is hella frustrating. At times I thought we'd see an airborne DS. I died to Lugae like 20 times.

Can I just ask, what are your levels and where are you?

I've actually struggled with a few bosses. It actually got to the point on the Dark Elf and the Bella Sisters, that only my Cecil was alive. For the Dark Elf, I literally healed myself every turn. When he attacked, my Cecil had counter. Eventually I won and gained 5 levels for Cecil. For the Bella Sisters it was similar, except I had protect and shell at that point, and they intelligently cast reflect on the reflect, giving me reflect. I was basically invulnerable to magic, and countered anything physical. On top of that, the first time I fought Barbarracia, she kicked my ass. The second time however, I owned her, and I didn't do any level grinding, I just went back and tried again.... strategy makes a HUGE difference.

Sadly though, I will be starting over. I didn't get Doublecast cause I didn't give enough augments to Palom/Porom, and I want to get that skill my first playthrough. I literally just beat the Bella sisters though, so I only have like 9 hours on the game.

I must say, as much as I liked the choose any character thing, the augment system is may more customizable, and I'm liking this version of the game more than any other version.

My characters are all in the high 60's and I'm in the lunar subterrane. No one's responding to my other thread, so I'd like to ask now: am I underleveled?

Oh, and Dr. Lugae was rage-inducing. I eventually just used elixirs on him.

You're ready to beat the game. I beat it at 63-67. Try not to fight every battle in the core until you find a save spot.

If you feel underleveled, this is the place to beef yourself up.

It's a heck of a lot better than the snes version, which was what I played before this one.

Begging your pardon but the US version most certainly did have ATB! It just didn't show you the gauges! In case you didn't notice enemy commands occured if you waited, and some abilities took longer to happen than others. The difference is that the US version was set to "Wait" by default and couldn't be switched, but if you just sat there on a character's basic set of commands (Attack, Item etc) enemies still attacked.

I'm guessing that you didn't read anything about FFIV-DS before you bought it, because if you did, you would have known that this game is massively "harder" than it's original.

The second my husband bought it, I told him "You're lucky you like leveling, because you're going to need it on bosses" and... yeah guess what, he plays the game like a game should be played, what ever you need to do to beat the game you do.

When he got Edward, Cecil was lvl 20, Edward comes along being lvl 9. Sure, my husband complained for.. oh.. 2 hours about Edward being useless, but he leveled him up to everyone else and hasn't had the need to complain since. When Cecil went pally and got back down to lvl 1, yeah he complained, but he leveled him up and got him back to normal.

Last time I checked, all of his chara's are atleast lvl 40 (I think the highest at lvl 46) and he's at Golbez in dwarfen castle or what ever.

Either way, he loves that game more than anything now, I could see him easily play it a million more times.

As for me, I hate level grinding. I'll prolly have all my chara's under leveled and dying constantly through the game, but that's not about to make me hate the game so much I'll only do one play through.

But again, everything you're complaining about was well known before the game even came out in america, clearly the game sells and people love it, so they're not really big enough of a deal for people to want to play it through once and never touch it again.

Smurf this game. I officially retract every positive comment I ever made about it. It's no fun unless you level-grind, and if you actually find that enjoyable, something is seriously wrong with you.

I really do not see how it is a level grind. I have done absolutely no level grinding, just fought all the random battles that occurred going throughout the normal course of the game and have not had a problem with the game at all. The only way I can see someone not being high enough level to kill a monster is if they run from a load of battles.

I never had to level grind. I already told you, you are at the levels I was when I beat the game.

Maybe move on to other parts of the core and get the other legendary weapons? Then go back and try again.

FFIV DS hard? I must have missed that part. I only died twice through my first play through. When I died I grinded some levels, which leveling seemed way too easy compared to the original. The Dark Elf, Golbez, The Wall and Zemus have always given me the most trouble, but I beat them all on my first try. I was remembering SNES FF4 being a tough game, but the DS version is a sinch...maybe too easy. Just grind some levels before a boss fight, and there you go. No, I had no trouble with the DS game, and love it. The voice acting is the only thing that I find weak about this version, but even that isn't that bad.

Not underleveled, but if you are having problems then buy a couple hundred Sirens and use them on the moons surface. Fighting the worm with level lust will boost you to level 99 within a few hours.

Try this next time - have everyone except Rosa defend cast(dualcast if you have it) Slow, then Berserk on them. It helps alot, and berserk prevents them from using icestorm. I've found that many of the lunar sub enemies are susceptible to status effects. Gold and silver dragons are weak to stop, the wizards(can't remember the actual name) are weak to toad and you can prevent the other dragon's attacks by using berserk and slow to slow em down. Also, if you use slow and give cecil both the counter and draw attacks augments w/ the combination of berserk, u have no one to heal but cecil and you can have him defend every turn and still attack.

for 90% of the fights in the game... slow works
one of the best strategies for random encounters
Cecil with Draw Attack, Counter, use Brace... cast berserk on enemies.

THE JACKEL

Slow is a very viable spell in Final Fantasy IV. In fact, it works on every enemy in the game and gives players more time to execute decisions and commands.

Rydia is meant to be a Summoner rather than a Black Mage; similarly, Yuna is meant to be a Summoner rather than a White Mage. Meteor is a symbolic spell by that point as Rydia is able to cause more damage with Bahamut for less MP and time cost.

If you feel that the game is too hard, you may want to approach every battle like a boss battle. Use your status effect spells. Use Defend. They work!

If you find yourself running out of MP, there are two things you should use.

1) Osmose. A great spell that steals MP t(Black Magic)

2) Pray. It also restores some MP now.

Bless
Ability: Slowly increases entire party's MP.
Location: Crystal Palace
How to Obtain: After the CPU is defeated and you watch the events that
precede the battle, go to the Crystal Palace and there should be a sparkling spot near the entrance to the crystal room.

It is more difficult, but nothing to the extent the original poster is ranting about. I think everyone who's played it can agree to that.

It was fun with the extra difficulty.

Most times it wasn't leveling that one needs, but stratagy.

Like Scarmiglion, I used Cecil as an item user soley, since that Elegy counter messes you up. Basically sat around de-silencing my mages and healing. :p

Scarmiglion, the first time I fought form 2 however, killed me. :_;

I rather liked being able to use any of the characters at the end of FFIV GBA and would have liked it to return, but I'm not too heartbroken if it's not in the DS version. Which I've still yet to play.

an old dog can't handle new challenges ;) I got killed by the 2 ice dragons too... Instead of getting angsty, I leveled a few times and figured out that I could paralyze or stop them. Then, the red dragon handed my toasted buns to me on a platter... Power level again, get the rest of Kain's Dragon armor, challenge.

I got this game about 2 weeks back now and i LOVE it, m totally addicted, am at the dark elf at the mo, keeps kicking my ass so shall go back to get some levels in a mo :)

I never played the original version but may see if i can D/L it somewhere and have a go.

I havnt found the bosses to be too hard in this one so far but i lways make sure i over level myself so i can breeze through pretty easily.

agreed. on the other hand, our characters are over powered to begin with(F.Y.I, if YOU were Cecil in real life, would YOU make it pst that mist dragon. probably not)

i was also disappointed in this, but they have Legit reasons,BTY, LUNAR RUINS WERE POINTLESS TO BEGIN WITH. go buy the GBA version if you want it that badly.
