Final Fantasy Job Restriction Challenge

I haven't done a challenge in a long time and I've decided on another one. This challenge isn't meant to be as hard as it is fun. The idea is that I will assign each character a class and only junction stats applicable to that class and only assign abilities applicable to that class. For example, if I made Squall a knight I could equip things like Str+20% or Str bonus, Vit+20% or vit bonus and perhaps HP+20%. I could not equip Magic+20%. I could junction magic to HP, Vit, and Str but I could not junction anything to my Spr or Mag stats. I could use special abilities like counter and maybe even auto protect but I could not use auto haste or auto shell. Also I could use attacks like Attack and Renzokuken but I could not use Magic or summon GF's. And so one with each class.

However I haven't completely decided on the rules yet. I want to make this similar to FFVs crystal shards. Basically, every time I obtain a GF it allows for the acquisition of a new class(es). With that in mind I want anyone interested to help me come up with a list of jobs for every GF. This should be based in part upon what the GF allows the character to do. For example I have decided Ifrit will allow the Knight class because of his strength abilities.


Also, I am considering restricting classes for each character based on both abilities and personalities. I am not sure if I want to do this though. For example, Squall could be a knight or any assault based class but I would restrict him from becoming a mage of any sort. Should I implement this restriction?

And another thing, I need to come up with a list of abilities each class can perform, as well a what stats they can junction.




I will start by listing the GFs and the classes they will unlock. I will fill this in as time goes on, giving me time to think about this. So far, these are my ideas. If anyone wants to add or suggest changes to this list please do. Give reasoning if possible. Any ideas are welcome.

Bahamut: Chemist
Cactuar: Ranger
Tonberry: Berserker
Eden: Gambler


Odin: Blue Mage
Gilgamesh: Dancer

Thats where I am at right now. If anyone is interested help me edit these rules so I can get this thing started.

would this be like ff5 and ff3 where you can change job classes or like ff9 say where the job classes are permanant?

i dunno which of those i would prefer tbh

If Eden unlocked the summoner job you wouldn't be able to summon gfs till near the end which would make the game incredibly difficult. Wouldnt it be easier if unlocked a number of jobs by obtaining certain gfs eg. ifrit unlocks knight, black Mage and White mage evloret unlocks summoner and alchemist etc. and interchange jobs between characters once they are unlocked?

this sounds like awesome, nik0. If/when we ever get around to eyes on plays ff8, I think we should include it :D

i have no idea how to even attempt that. Junctioning and the like baffled me so i never went near it

Suggestions:

Quezacotl: I'm not sure I'd go with Alchemist. I think some form of mage would better fit.

Shiva: I agree. Monk.

Ifrit: Warrior.

Siren: Why Black Mage too? I'd say White Mage only. Maybe you could make Quezacotl Black Mage.

Brothers: If it wasn't for the lack of magic, I'd say Paladin definitely, but I'm not quite sure. Geomancer is a magic class, and Brothers supplies way too much HP, so I don't agree with Geomancer from Brothers.

Diablos: Hm. I'd say Dark Knight, but I dnt think Diablos is high on the DEF scale. I think I'd go with Time Mage too.

Carbuncle: Definitely not Blue Mage (Uh... Quistis?) Not summoner either. I'd think some sort of specialized combat-based class, like Knight. Yeah, Knight sounds good.

Leviathan: Scholar. Black Mage + White Mage.

Pandemona: I'm not quite sure. I don't think Sorcerer would fit though. STR+, SPD+, Initiative, and Absorb don't quite craft a single class, I don't think. Absorb is what throws me off. If not for Absorb, I'd probably say like Black Belt or something like that, like an advanced Monk class, but Shiva pretty much has Monk covered.

Cerberus: I'd say Thief. Ninja would work well.

Alexander: Paladin works fine.

Doomtrain: Dark Knight ftw.

Bahamut: Eh, lots of mixed buffs here. My initial thought was Alchemist, tbh.

Jumbo Cactuar: SAMURAI SAMUAI SAMURAI (I was waiting for this one XD)

Tonberry King: I think like a cross between Corsair and Beast Master. Dunno really :S

Eden: I was thinking berserker, but only because that's all that comes to mind.

The only problem is that some of the classes would pretty much mirror other classes. Sounds interesting though.

I would make each GF multiple classes.

Shiva could be Warrior (strength and Vit), Paladin (STR/Vit + SPR) or white mage (SPR).

A huge factor I would take into account is the special battle command abilities each GF gives. Many of them are near-superfluous, but I would still make them mandatory for each job. That would be a very FFIII-thing to do. I might make Pandemona Dark Knight because I think that's the one with souleater or something like that.

This sounds like a lot of fun. It actually makes me wanna pick up VIII again. I love the junction system.

I was thinking I could equip any GF to any class but just be mindfully to junction appropriately. That way I could have all of the necessary abilities and still have the class restrictions. As I obtain a new GF I 'unlock' a new usable class in a sense, but I don't have to equip that exact GF to use the class. Until I get the corresponding summon, though, some classes would be off limits.

Alternatively I could require the GF to be equipped and I could use ability medicine to teach them new moves but I dont think I have that ability to the end of the game if I recall.


Also, I will be forbidding limit breaks unless they fit the class. A white mage squall cannot use renzokuken but a knight could. Just as a knight Zell could not use Duel but a monk Zell could. This would effectively make blue mage a quistis exclusive class though unless i can think of a way to give blue mage other abilities.

Chemist: Can junction to spd. Can use all items. Can equip Medical Data.

Knight: Can junction magic to Str. Def. and HP. Can use Str + 20 40 60% and bonus. Can use HP + 20 and 40% and Vit + 20 40% and Bonuses. Can Equip Defend. Can perform Renzokuken. Can junction fire magic to elem-attack if squall has cutting trigger and fira magic if he has flame saber.

Monk: Can junction magic to HP and Str. (possibly spirit too?) Can equip HP+20 40 80%. Can equip Str+20%. Can use potion, potion+ (Chakra) Can equip Counter. Maybe can equip Spr +20, 40%?? Maybe Med Data as well (to make chakra useful later on)

White Mage: Can cast all curative magics. Can cast protect/shell and double/triple. Can junction to Mag and Spr. Can use Mag and Spr 20 40 60% and bonuses. Can use cure magic and shell/protect with slot but not full cure, wall, the end or rapture or other magics. Can use White Wind. Can stock magic and can cast all above magic with draw. Auto Shell, both expend abilities. Move Find. Can use recover and revive if I don't ban those abilities for being cheap.

Black Mage. Can cast all attack magic except Demi. Able to cast status magic. Can junction to Mag and Spr. Can equip spr, mag 20 40 60% and bonuses. Can use attack and status magic with slot but none of Selphies special abilities. Can use Angel Wing. Can use dark and fire shot. Auto Shell, both expend abilities. Can use Status and Elemental Attack Junction. Can stock magic and cast all above magic with draw. Move Find. Maybe stat defense x 2. Maybe Doom.

Red Mage: Can junction to any stat but only one stat. Can cast Fire-ara-aga, Blizzard-ara-aga, Thunder-ara-aga, Aero, Water, Drain, Poison, Cure, Cura, life and double. Can stock and cast all above magic with draw. Move Find.

Time Mage: Can junction to Mag and Spr. Can cast all support and time magic except quake. Can cast and stock all above magic with draw. Can equip Auto Haste and Auto Reflect. Move Find.

Geomancer: Can junction to Mag, Spr, elemental att and def. Can cast Aero, Tornado, Quake, Water, Fire-ara-aga. Can Summon Pandemona, Brothers, Leviathan, Ifrit without boosting. Can use Flarestone, Gysahl Greens.

Blue Mage: Can Junction to Magic and Spirit. Can cast any magic with draw but cannot use magic in battle otherwise except for scan. Can use Blue Magic limit break.

Thief/Ninja: Can junction to speed and luck. Can Equip Mug, Alert, Initiative, Enc Half/None. Can use Kamikaze (maybe?)

Berserker: Can junction to HP, Str and Vit. Can cast Berserk. Can use Mad Rush. If not using mad rush or berserk you must be in berserk status. Can equip HP + 20 40 80% and str/vit 20 40 60%. Can equip Auto Haste.

Sorcerer: Can junction two of four stats. Your choice of Str, HP, Vit, Spr. Can use Elemental Attack and maybe Defensex2 junction. Possibly allow absorb.

Paladin: Can junction to HP, Str and Spr. Can equip cover and defend. Can junction holy magic to elemental defense and attack if the game allows that. Can equip HP + 20 40 80% and str + 20% Can use cure, cura, esuna, holy. Maybe allow for summoning of Alexander without boost.

Dark Knight: Can junction to HP, Str, and Vit. Can use status attack and defense x2 junction. Can use Darkside. can equip str + 20 40 60% and hp + 20%. Can use Renzokuken. Cannot be under aura effect. Must be Zombie at all times. Maybe Kamikaze.

Hunter: Can junction to hit%, speed, luck. Can use Lvl up and Lvl Down. Can equip Initiative, Rare Item. Can use Shot. Can use Degenerator (maybe?) Can use Angelo, Phoenix, Moogle, Moomba.

Dancer: Can junction to spd and defense x4. Can junction status attack. Can cast confuse, berserk, haste. Auto Haste.

Summoner: Can junction to Mag and Spr. Can use all summons in battle. Can boost all summons.

Gambler: Can junction to luck and evade. Can equip Luck + 50% and evade + 30%. Can use all limit breaks. Can use card. Can use Mad Rush. Can use Devour.

This is 18 jobs. One for every GF in the game if you include Odin and Gilgamesh.

And I'm off! (sorry for the triple post guys) I thought of this challenge a little after I started this game so the challenge officially began in the training center. I am now fighting Diablos with a monk, knight, white mage party.

Edit: I lost and now I am going at it with a black mage instead of a white one. Im hoping blind will help me out.

Double Edit: And I've won. The blind strategy worked perfectly, as usual. It's fun having no ability to revive my characters since I can't use items until Bahamut. Also, I am thinking of reversing thief and summoner, mainly because i want to use enc none and half earlier to get pointless battles out of the way.

Triple Edit: A rule has been introduced: Classes can only be changed at save points or when you reach a new location. I think I will disable class changing on the world map. Also if anyone can find a flaw in any of my rules please point them out as I will be tweaking this challenge when I finish it for playabilities sake.

Quadruple Edit: beat Gerogero with knight, monk, white mage.

The knight is far too powerful if he is allowed to use Renzokuken. I am banning renzokuken from knight class and I am allowing the Ninja class to use it.

Edit: I got pwned by brothers twice because of this restriction. I quit for now.

so basically your saying only irvine, quistis, or rinoa can be a hunter?

No anyone can be a hunter but certain characters get an advantage for that class.

Also, I am about to fight Seifer and Edea and can't decide if I want to spend any time leveling up or not. I want to learn mug so I can steal stuff in the upcoming battle but it's 75 points away. I've put the game on hold for right now and ill probably play it again tomorrow.

I'd say you've got White Mage and Black Mage assigned to the wrong one, you should have switched them over since Quezacotl does mag increases and Siren does status healing and effect with her RF abilities.

If/when you lose Odin, will you lose access to the Blue Mage class?

I agree.

I assumed that you meant the classes to be strictly based on what they could learn, rather than a set of limitations that would define what each one would learn after you obtained the necessary GF.

I would say to cut down on the amount of classes and simply use two GFs for each class. Then you could define what stats could be junctioned when you had one GF equipped and what stats could be juncioned when you had two GFs equipped. You would have to be careful to balance it out though so that you don't get two GFs for a single class too soon. I suppose you could do one GF from the top row and one from the bottom on the GF menu for each class.

There would still be some conflicting skills and stuff of that sort, but, with the already conflicting skills that each GF can learn, I'm not sure it's possible to get around that. Well, unless you Card Mod to get skill teaching items.

This idea is absolutely awesome. It's a very creative challenge. But it looks really complicated to keep all the classes, which GF's they are represented by and their abilities/restrictions in the head. xD

Also, FF8 is more heavily dependant on Limitbreaks than any other FF, so I can easily see how the classes that allows "Renzokuken" and possibly some of the other's Limitbreaks will become the most powerful ones. In the worst case, completely overshadowing other classes.

...how about banning Renzokuken completely? xD Of course, it might not be quite that bad thanks to other restrictions (I haven't tried this challenge, so I wouldn't know).

Also, since Odin/Gilgy are both random and allows no junctioning, how can you use them for possible classes?

He said obtaining a GF unlocks the class, but a character does not need that GF junctioned to use the class after that. Thus he will unlock Blue Mage for all his characters when he acquires Odin, and Dancer for them all when he acquires Gilgamesh.

I have extremely bad news. My external HD seems to have crapped out and it had everything on it, including the emulator i was using to play this game. I don't think I'll be able to complete this challenge until I can figure out how to get it working again if thats even possible.

I did beat edea though, using a party of Ninja, (squall) White Mage (Irvine) and Black Mage (Rinoa).

And then my computer magically shut itself off for no reason whatsoever and now my HDD works again. :p

Edit: I also think I should create a armor/weapons list which would restrict what each class can junction. I'm thinking elemental armor and weapons could be created by junctioning two of the same magic type. For example fire armor for a knight could be made from fire junctioned to defense and fira junctioned to elem-defense or fira/firaga. This would make the game a bit more interesting. Restrictions will also keep high HP classes like knight and monk obtain 5000+ HP at level 10 or 15 via magic like regen. I'm considering having no restrictions on what magic a mage can junction, though. Does anyone like this idea and more importantly does it make sense?

Sounds like a good idea. Makes perfect sense, and restricting magic for classes that can otherwise get too good trough junctioning should make it more fun.
