Zelda II, I agree that this game was impossible. I haven't tried playing through it in years but I remember getting so frustrated over this game as a child. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a complete walk in the part compared to this game.
I've beaten TMNT a couple times as a child. Tried to help my little sister play it last night and I ended up losing all four turtles in the dam. -_-
I was also never able to beat The Battle of Olympus or BattleToads.
Zelda II is very horrid and un-fun, but hell, I even have enough trouble with the first Zelda :o
Shining Force II is a game which I got on reccomendation on the Wii thingy, and it is also horrible and hard. I can't think of any others really. I'm a casual gamer, so I don't really buy games that are about to kick my arse.

I've tried picking this game up a gazillion times, thinking "Hey, I'm gonna beat this sunnovabitch" and each time I get owned by the first boss. He only has to hit me a few times before I crash and burn, and it's impossible to dodge his hits, I swear. D: Even with save states I couldn't beat him. Never playing this game again.

Oh my god, these games are horrible. While it does require skill to master these, most of all it requires memorization to stay alive from all the monstrous traps that the Addams Family mansion is infested with. The bathroom soaps are trying to kill you, the chandelier is trying to kill you, and even apples are trying to kill you! Good god.
The SNES version has harder gameplay, but the NES version outsucks it because if you get a game over, you have to start from the very beginning. The SNES version decided to be less cruel in that area, but made up for it by making everything in the world trying to kill you instead. Why have I beaten both of these games?

Maybe it's just me being stubborn and sucky at the same time, but this game is smurfing hard. When it comes to Mega Man games, I refuse to check which boss I should beat first, so I end up doing it trial and error. I also refuse to use e-tanks until the Wily stages. I usually figure out who the weakest link is pretty quickly, but not in this game. Oh no. They're all hard dammit. I haven't been able to kill a robot master yet in this game, and I've tried them all. If this game gets easier I might just never find out!

I mean, I honestly think they're fun, they have great music, I love the sound effects, but I'll always screw up and get killed at the first level somewhere and lose the desire to play.

The first Castlevania.
I almost beat it, once. Mostly using save states, but I did try to some extent to play it legit. Got to Dracula, on my last life, managed to get through and beat him with hardly any life left. Then he transformed into his demon form and I just gave up.
Heyyyy, Adam's Family wasn't horrible in it's time, it was non-linear and about as complex as a platformer could be back in teh day.
I must say the stages were extremely long but EXTREMELY tricky to trip through, soooo many traps, odd-platforming situations and enemies.
Am I the only one who found the original Rayman to be tediously difficult in some places?

Final Fantasy XII. It seems impossible for me to make it even a quarter a way through the Penumbra in the Pharos even after multiple level grinds. Those Damn frogs and blue horses gave me over ten game over screens.

Once you get Toxiguns the game gets incredibly easy*. And if you can ingratiate yourself with S.E.L.F. and keep your androids alive it's made easier, too, on account of the fact that you have basically got Terminators on your side.
* Edit: And let's not even talk about toxiguns + teleporters + shielding. You basically turn into a team of medics who just teleport around administering fatal shots to the aliens.
Comix Zone was hard as nails.

Legend of Legaia. Some of the bosses were just ridiculous, and my PS1 memory card was busted at the time so I was only able to see how far I'd make it without dying once. Answer: not very. I think I made it to that guy named Songi and could never beat him.

I Wanna Be The Guy. This is the single most sadistic thing you'll ever play. I'd spend countless hours on school nights trying to beat one smurfing screen for this game. I finally beat it over the summer and felt like I'd risen to the gaming Pantheon.
I'm playing Nocturne right now for the first time. My current game over recored, 10. I'm up to the Third Boss right now (Matador) The game is just plain mean sometimes, especially since I only have 1 demon with Sukunda and he likes to kill him first :(

The game gets smarter and introduces more complex attributes AND boosts the statistics of the enemy mooks. Thank goodness there are some ways to exploit* them still, else I wouldn't have gotten as far as I did(still haven't beaten it on hardest).
*For example Nuwangi can be stalled by using Eruru(who can only heal). Due to his feelings for her he will refuse to attack her. So just use her to keep him from ripping up your guys while they take care of the rest of the rabble and the other boss. Still not easy, but it is very close to down right impossible if you don't distract him(at least I didn't find a way to do so, I tried and tried because I didn't want to exploit the AI, though that exploit was most definitely put there on purpose, perhaps as the ONLY way to beat hardest mode? Still though it is kinda cheap to completely disable one of the bosses from being able to attack at all merely by blocking him with one of your frailest characters who can't even attack).
Civ 2 on anything but the lowest difficulty. I haven't played it for a while, so I could probably do better now, but when you're young:(

The Devil May Cry series is really hard. Unless you play on the easiest level (which I refuse to do, despite the fact that I can't get past one of the bosses in 3).

There's this part in Xenogears, in the Tower of Something or Other, I think. You have to jump and seesaw and do three backflips counter-clockwise while wearing a tutu to get past the level. My mom had to get a memory card from a friend past that point. I was like.. 6 or 7 back then, so I'm sure it's easier now. My mom fails at platforming and was the only one playing it, so I just remember it being hard.
Megaman. The first one. They wanted me to die. The game developers -wanted- me to die. Arcade games are like that.
Illusion of Gaia. That game got CRAZY HARD. It was fine, maybe even a little easy (except for the first boss). Then you meet the lovely vampire couple Jack and Sylvana. They killed me so many times and then ate my save file after I finally beat them. ;-; I've only finished that game on an emu with cheats.

Finding games with purposeful and respectful difficulty is hard these days. Ninja Gaiden tried, and fairly well succeeded. Most difficulties these days are from horrible programming. One game that I hate recently due to its wonky programming is Castlevania X Chronicles on PSP. It plays as crap-tastic as the original Castlevania on NES
NES games were mostly all hard though...
Well Xenogears did have that one boss fight that irritates everyone I know who played it... Anyone else remember when you finally got to battle Miang? ;)

Grandia 2: Valmars Eye... I remember my cousin useing a cheats disk so he could max out his characters and he still stuggled on this boss, I swear I never had so much trouble on a boss... first I tried to kill all of it and failing that 3 times I decided to go straight for the eye and only just beat it.
I guess I'm the only one here that has trouble with FFXII and Crono Trigger.

As for CT, you might just need a dedicated healer like Robo or Marle. Frog has healing magic but its a bit weaker than theirs. A Crono/Lucca/Robo party should have a fair chance through the Black Omen, just make sure to have plenty of items to restore MP. Once you get Crono and one of the healers a few more levels, it will be easier to bring in other characters but I'm assuming this is a first playthrough so make sure to only level characters you actually use.

I just picked up Street Fighter Anniversary Collection so I could finally have a console version of Street Fighter III. Gill and Akuma totally own my ass in this game... I finally beat it but damn it if Gill isn't Capcom's way of making an SNK boss. By that I mean, cheap and terribly broken. :cry:

I'm sorry, let me clarify, my advice is to help you get through the Black Omen. Also, what is your party equipped with? Have you gotten the Moon Armor or Prism helms yet? They will boost your defense greatly. The only attacks Lavos have that kick total ass are "Destruction Rains from the Heavens" (1st Form) and Grand Stone(Third Form).
It sounds to me like you may have skipped a few "optional" quests.
As for Completion in VII. Max Levels, all equipment and items, all materia types (including Master), All Enemy Skills, Defeat Both WEAPONS, and all Limit breaks denotes 100% Completion in my book. If you are really anal, I guess you need one Mastered version of every materia type but I feel this is a waste of time in the long run.

I find these two funny cause...This was the only megaman game for the NES I personally owned for awhile. And I LOVED Megaman. I played this game consistently. I can sit down and beat this game without dieing once now, and get everything in like an hour. My best suggestion is to start with Plant Man.Quote:

I can agree with some of the games listed:
Battletoads
Gradius
TMNT #1
Ghost and Goblins, Ghouls and Ghosts (whichever version you want)
Zelda II was difficult, but not overly so. And Zelda I the second time through was so much fun. The first time through was way too easy IMO.
Megaman 9 (the new one made in 8-bit) may be one of the hardest games I have ever played. Way more so than the previous megaman games.
