We Americans are getting a new president today. Oh, and he's black too.
So, if you live anywhere on the face of the Earth and are planning on watching TV today, you'll probably be watching the inauguration or related events; it'll pretty much be on every single channel.

I'll probably watch it live, but I still don't know at what time he's sworn in.
Swearing in is at 12:00 noon (eastern time, of course).
I should probably go to bed then.

I'm kind of bummed I'm going to be in class, and unfortunately (probably) not with a professor hip enough to cancel lecture so we can watch it. Le sigh.

A woman called into one of our local radio shows to say that she arrived at the capitol to for the inauguration at 4:00 am and she's already two to three hundred yards away from the capital.
I'm going to miss it. Damn it.
Oh well, it's not like it won't be shown again. I can probably find it recorded online somewhere too.
We're taping it to watch later this evening.
Congratulations, the United States of America has finally caught up with the majority of the world with regards to being able to put someone who isn't a white guy in charge of their country. ;) 'tis a big thing for America, though, and I'm sure I'll read all about it in the newspaper tomorrow. Better than reading about death, famine and rape as normal.
Hmm, I'll be in lunch, so I might go watch it in a teachers class and grab my food.
Not in that particular order, mind you.
It's airing midnight or 2 AM my time, so I'll just have to watch it in school tomorrow. D; They said they would play it for us, but you know how schools are! I'll probably just end up watching it at home tomorrow evening.

I was also halfway hoping for him to just bust out an evil laugh for 20 minutes, just because that would be such win. As it stands, that's one of the better political speeches made, though, so I forgive him.
I was just trying to imagine what it must be like to be a black person over the age of about 50 today. I mean, to remember a time of segregation like that, and today see a black man take the oath of office... damn.

Also yeah, his speech was awesome and I was quite moved by it. I'm not going to go so far as to say this is a revolutionary moment for the country, but it's definitely a large step in the right direction and I'm pretty pleased.

I watched it earlier today on several different stations and I found it touching. I enjoyed Aretha Franklin's performance, but that poet they had didn't even seem like a poet. It sounded like a speech and a dull one at that and if she wrote it then she wouldn't have to constantly look down at the paper. Oh man oh man we finally got a black family in the white house!

I knew he was a good public speaker but dayum! I did not know that it was to that extent. His inauguration speech was seriously one the best speeches I've ever heard and it wasn't just the content, but the way in which it was delivered was just wow. Although I thought his whole opening was a little weird. Felt like an announcer introducing a boxer. I expected him to say, "Coming in at 180 pounds".

The speech was amazing, the poem was just awful. And that guy who was there for Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech devolved into Doctor Seuss towards the end of his speech thing.
I am not impressed with our politicians, and I am disgusted with the way people are so often led to only vote within a two-party system. Though , in the grand spectrum of things, it matters not who you vote for. The powers that be will elect who they want, regardless. This country needs more change than an African-American President, who will not be able to fulfill an objective which economically and domestically uneducated Americans expect him to. Change will come, in time. However, I do not believe it to be the change Americans are hoping for.
People shouldn't feel proud as individuals for it, but they can feel proud of their society for doing it. And at least the US is able to admit to itself that it has a race issue and have a debate about it.Quote:
