Eyes on Plays Final Fantasy VII!

This is it. The moment you've been waiting for. Enough with these cheap cartridges and tiny sprites. We're in the Next-Gen era now. Bigger. Flashier. Better.

It is now time for Eyes on Final Fantasy to take on a new quest. A new era. It will be unlike anything we have attempted before.

Behold as we unleash the self-proclaimed greatest FF...

no wait... greatest RPG

no that's not good enough... GREATEST VIDEO GAME OF ALL TIME

That's right, it's time for

Eyes on Plays

Silver Star challenges:
- Beat the game
- Acquire all level 4 limit breaks (including Aeris)
- Acquire all 4 Huge Materia
- Breed a Gold Chocobo
- Get the Barret date in Gold Saucer
- Acquire Final Attack at the battle arena
- Post the best score for Snowboarding, Motorcycle, or Submarine mini-games
- Defeat Ruby and Emerald Weapon
- All characters level 99 (except Aeris)
- Acquire all characters' ultimate weapons
- Acquire all E.Skills

Gold Star challenges:
- Beat the game using initial equipment
- Beat the game without using materia
- Beat the game using a single character (Cloud->Tifa->Cid->Cloud)
- Beat the game with all characters under level 20
- Get all four dates at Gold Saucer (will require four different games to be started, please keep character names consistent)
- Acquire two sets of Master materia (the set from Emerald counts as one)
- All characters level 99 (including Aeris)
- Come up with the most bizarre method for reviving Aeris

Kishi's Platinum Star Challenge:
Winners will receive Kishi's secret salsa recipe
- Acquire 5,000 points in Speed Square

EXTREME Challenges:
- Beat the game using a single character, no materia, and initial equipment
- Master at least three of every materia (including E. Skills)

The Challenge to End All Challenges:
- Revive Aeris

In addition to these challenges there will be a special troll contest that will be set up later.

Hey, everybody, make sure you get the super life-saving potions off the first Red guard that is easily obliterated as soon as they get off the train. It's very fortunate for us this place's initial defense are the weakest guards Shinra could find.

What emulators are you guys using? I'm on pSX, since it's actually been updated in the last seven years, but I definitely can't get it to look that pretty. Just not sure if I want to deal with ePSXe's finickiness.

No pix yet, but I'm not too far. I'll probably take a while to get through this but I'm going to try some of the challenges.

You have to make sure to use the correct plugin for ePSXe, namely Pete's.

But yeah, doesn't look too good.

You can always just dl the PC version, I posted the patch for vista on the previous page.

Nah, I just decided to go with ePSXe. Just hate how when you change your config and launch the game, you have to exit the emulator fully in order to change anything again. It's pretty tedious.

The dll error requires you to download something, this to be exact. The problem is, after that, when I run the game I got some "No WLM" or something like that error. And by then I was just fed up D:

My high score is 9144, BTW. Still haven't been able to break 10k, but maybe if I work at it more. Which I'm not willing to do due to the time constraints.

I enjoyed Tseng slapping Aerith across the face and Tifa exclaiming, "WTF!" I'm quite immature enough to find something this stupid funny for the rest of the game. Especially once I name Cait Sith STFU.

Edit: I also didn't realize Prez Shinra has a cigar in his mouth until this playthrough.

People bitch about the gunsword, but I find this one to be just as ridiculous.

Anyway, after beating the crap out of the little machines with a 400 pound sword, we save the game.

Next time in Chapter 2: Will Dick escape the reactor in time? Will several soldiers gang-rape him in an alley? Will he enjoy it?

Yes, all my playthroughs are PC versions. Only way I can make screenshots.

My PlayStation version strategy guide says that the propeller is a valid target (although worth ???? points), but looking it up online, it seems that it wasn't a valid target in the PS version due to a glitch in the programming, but was added again in the PC version. Apparently it was a target for the Japanese version as well.

Some people say that it is in the PS version, but nearly impossible to hit in that version due to a change in the screen dimensions. In the PC version, as the coaster moves around, the zeppelin propeller passes at the very lower-right corner of the screen. If you move the target as far down and to the right as you can, and ultra rapid-fire the laser button, you will hit it most of the time (I sometimes miss due to not being fast enough on pressing the laser button). But the only way I have seen it hit is by that method, even though it is on screen for quite a while at other times. It is simply too small and moves too fast to target at any other time. So a shift in the screen aspect when it went from PlayStation to PC might have caused it to line up perfectly in the PC version, which is why only PC players are effectively able to hit it. Anyway, it makes getting the Parasol (which was renamed to Umbrella in the PC version) and the Flayer much easier, as due to poorer controls on the PC version, getting high numbers is very difficult.

Finally got ePSXe working the way I wanted last night. Also ran into a weird glitch that was fixed by a more recent version - in the 7th Heaven, when I'd use the elevator, it would automatically bring me back up when I hit the bottom.

Haven't made much progress at all, suffice to say. I'm being kinda lame and just using default names. I'm going to try to get the date with Barret for sure though, I've never done it before.

Maybe just to spice up the names I'll take suggestions for what to name more non-vital characters like Yuffie and Vincent... any takers?

FFVII runs perfect for me in ePSXe 1.5.2, minus the pause that happens instead of a transition before battles. I could, probably, fix that problem with a change in my configuration settings, but I don't feel like looking it up (right now).

I searched Google for the settings I'm using now. There are a lot of forum threads on the internet that address common problems with Final Fantasy games on ePSXe.

Well, pSX emulates perfectly to a fault, including the PS1's low internal resolution. So if you're not trying to scale up pSX's rendering resolution too high, it'll look pretty great, but without any kind of post-processing (like ePSXe's plugins can do) it quickly gets pretty uggified.

also: Monda, try getting ePSXe 1.7.0. 1.5.2 is extremely outdated and might give you some hiccups. Also, some of Pete's plugins have specific hacks to fix the battle swirl in FF games. If you have a decent graphics card I'd go with his OpenGL2 plugin.

How to Revive Aeris!

In a spoiler tag due to length :p
(SPOILER) Step 1:
Translate all of Future Esthar's theories into a coherent chain of thoughts that can be understandable without even playing FF VIII. Then, a pattern emerges that will result in the appearance of a hidden number when carried out starting with the number of belts that Lulu from FFX wears (this trick was planned by square from the start). This hidden number is the exact time that must be of the in game clock upon scene when Aeris is killed.

Step 2:
Analyze the concepts behind Tetsuya Nomura's character designs. Once one fully understands them, they will see a number that is the hidden theme in all characters. This is the number of Hi Potions that are needed for the revival of Aeris.

Step 3:
Do not trade away the Mythril. Keep it and resist the urge to get Great Gospel.

Step 4:
Aeris must be KOed when completing the temple of the ancients, and her level must exactly match that of the high potions obtained in step 2.

Step 5:
After the party gains control of Cid, feed the fish in the City of the Ancients the Mythril. Because of the playtime at Aeris's death, the fish is actually alive and awake, so he gets out of the way. Go down and where the white materia is you will find an item called &*%^th

Step 6:
When you reobtain Cloud and Tifa, go to the sector five church, and use the &*%^th as well as your high potions on the Aeris ghost. You only have 1 shot at this or you can't ever revive her. This will trigger a boss fight with the Fate Keeper, who has seven times the HP of Penance and can only be damaged by the buster sword. When he is defeted, the &*%^th will vanish and an item called Fateth will be found.

Step 7:
Throw the fateth into the lifestream at Mideel. Aeris will rise from it at level 7 with all limit breaks as well as her true ultimate weapon, the Wisdom of time, complete with master Restore, Barrier, Life, Ultima, Knights of the Round, and full Cure materia.However, her name is also changed from Aeris to Aerith. Even if you named her something else, it will be renamed Aerith. She takes a slot of the party and never leaves again. She also glows because the lifestream is radioactive and glowing Aerith has red eyes. And longer hair. Cloud also decides to dye his hair black for the rest of the game.

Step 8:
The revival scene causes a glitch in the game, so you must then save the game, and on the same memory card as the FF save must have 7 perfect files of Spawn: The Eternal. Failure to do so will result in your Playstation exploding.

Step 9:
Enjoy Aerith. she has a max of 777 HP, 77 MP and is always stuck in your party. Also Sephiroth will cast Traitor on her at the start of the final battle, causing her to constantly heal him, as well as her being immune to all attacks. Defeating Sephiroth will result in a pin up picture of Aeris and Quina as a reward on the The End Screen. You will then be treated to the true ending of FF VII, where a chocobo lays an egg that contains a letter that states that the the Final Villain for the next Villain is none other then Gogo from FF VI. Also it is rumored that it even shows the true identity of Gogo, but this is yet to be confirmed.

Looks like I won't be able to record it, my laptop can't handle ePSXe and CamStudio at the same time! Oh well. On with the game~

EDIT:

lom, I have the same problem when I first get ePSXe, I don't remember what I did exactly, but I think it involved downloading plug-ins or something. Look for something like an FAQ at the place you got the emulator.

Yeah, it takes awhile to get the settings just right for your computer :(

Mine's still a bit laggy, but it's as good as it's gonna get.

As long as you have one designated mage (I used Tifa because she had the weakest attack), you can just attack him from the FRONT so he doesn't counterattack, and he'll quickly run out of ammo, from there, the battle is easy. He'll always just use his rear gun and ram attack, and won't be able to turn around, basically the battle will be piss easy.

I have a question regarding this All characters to 99 (including Aerith) challenge. Does Aerith have to be 99 in the same file as all your other characters who are 99? Because, I was thinking of doing this challenge, except I didn't want to have to level 2 of my characters to 99 way early and make the game way, way too easy. So, if I beat the game and get all Characters to 99, and then make a second file in which I level Aerith to 99, would I get the gold star?

I'm so happy to be done with Shinra Headquarters, because it's a big, time-consuming area. It's a really, really exciting area in this game, though! I was creeped out when Cloud and the others found the corpses and blood trails during the aftermath of Sephiroth's attack - especially because the background music was very eerie (I hope I don't have nightmares tonight). Oooh.

Hours of trying!

It's good to know which targets give the most points. Be sure to shoot the cacti (there are three or four of them), the yellow/orange boulder (200 points), the bunny balloon (70 points), the boat (point value varies), the big UFO near the end of the ride (1000 points), and a light on the left side of the track right before the ride ends (200 points).

You'll have to memorize where every target is/comes on screen!

By the way, I love the Mog game! =O

I got Beta. Yes. It took forever, power-leveling to be able to defeat the Midgar Zolom first thing, but I did it. All my characters are like level 23 with level 2 limit breaks (Cloud=Lvl 3 limit break), before even heading through the marshes. This is a good thing though, because I decided to go through with the Level 99 Aerith challenge.

The Wutai sidequest is a lot of fun. I'm glad that I did it during disc one; during my last playthrough I did Yuffie's sidequest during the second half of FFVII, and it felt weird to me that Yuffie was willing to steal my party's Materia after everything that happened. Horrible!

This game is depressing, though. Aerith is my favorite party member, and I prolonged disc one as much as I could (without getting bored), so I could keep her as long as possible. She's so cute. =(

At least Cait Sith has a replacement! Tifa isn't an adequate replacement for Aerith.

Oh man! Something corrupted my data. I didn't lose everything... but I did lose about 10 levels of progress, and everyone's limit breaks which took me hours to get this early. I'm really, really bum'd.

I don't even know if I want to continue now.

Story-wise, I'm about to enter Gongaga. Level-wise, I'm around 30 since I've grinded limit breaks. I've acquired all the limits I can have for now. I have all Enemy skills available at this point (for both ES materia), including Beta and Chocobuckle. Slowly but surely, I'm overpowering the party. :hat:

Depending on what version you use, you might be able to upload the save file from just before and someone can play you past the place where it crashes. If you're playing the PC version, send a save to me and I'll see what I can do.
