So, that new kid character shown at E3? His name is Hope and he fights with a boomerang. There's friction between him and Snow and he has a short temper. Apparantly, he also hugs Vanille.
And Vanille fights with a fishing rod.

Oh, really? That's funny cause I've seem to lost hope for XIII.
Actually reading the article it describes the fishing pole as "Enemies are struck by a needle on the end of the wire", something which conjures up some sort of whip/flail hybrid. At least I hope, because a fishing pole is so incredibly lame.

Weapons sound amusing. Names... Screw the V haters, I feel XIII is definetly the game with the worst names :p "Hope" is already getting on my nerves and I still haven't played the game yet.

Took me a while to find out Larsa was a boy, and after I found out my respect rose a hundred times when it meant that he basically told his guards that Penelo was his, bought and paid for.

Hope? Universal or not, it's still mainly, overwhelmingly a girl's name.
Meanwhile, any news on his Eidolon? Lightning has Odin (which is weird, since I'd expect a thunder-based one for her), Snow has Shiva, Vanille (supposedly) has Carbuncle, Sazh has Brynhildr, and Fang has Bahamut. What's Hope's gonna be, I wonder?
I bet his Eidonlon is Pegasusmon, Flying hope!

I think the pairing fits. His name can be associated with holiness, and Alexander is of the holy element.
Hope = Holy? Maybe very loosely in English because they both start with "H" and have four letters.
And I think part of the shame is that FF main characters have in many of the last half of the FF saga been either annoying (Squall, Tidus) or afterthoughts (Vaan). Though who knows how this hero will turn out.
I'd love it if this guy turned out to be the most loved character in the history of FF now. :D

I try not to think of it as one, but ultimately end up thinking of it as one, anyway.
So he'll apparently, on occasion, get scared and run from battle, leaving things up to the player to train him into getting more confidence and becoming a strong, powerful warrior who won't run from battle.

Reminds me a little of BoFIII where the main character starts as kid and is afraid to fight (he has a hilarious attack animation) but once you get hims some levels his confidence grows and he actually starts to battle like other heroes. :D
BoFIII's hero doesn't randomly run from battle, though; he's just a little kid. *BoFIII nostalgia*
EDIT: Actually, this kind of reminds me of FFT's Brave system. If Hope gets too confident does he just wander off?
How about Edward from FFIV?
He was an immensely popular character to use, I can see why they felt the need to bring someone like him back.

I don't think that's true because of color issue. Hope looks fully white, whereas Sazh is black.
Sazh's son is Dajh, not Hope.
Hope isn't Sazh's son, as mentioned before.
Actually, the idea of him running away from battles - whilst it has the potential to be REALLY ANNOYING until you get his confidence up - is actually quite accurate. More accurate than 14-year-olds just diving into battles when they've never fought in their life. I mean, he's just a kid and of course he's going to be scared.
Hopefully you can just fight a load of weak monsters and boost the confidence that way. I can imagine it would be VERY BAD to enter a boss fight and have him run away in fear :|;
He'll apparently be voiced by Vincent Martella, whom Disney fans might recognize as the voice of Phineas and Ferb's Phineas.
