They come off as snotty?
What do you think about them.
They come off as snotty?
What do you think about them.
I think you'll just have to deal with it?
What's the big deal.
I think their sexy?
Psy, I can't believe you hate anime?
They're pretty awesome when T-rex uses them, though?
Why are you guys so shocked.
Because you used to be the resident anime fan? All the threads you posted in went off on wild tangents about why Sailor Moon was super kawaii?
Why so serious.
I really don't see the whole hoopla about all this, like what gives?
Sometimes they are necessary when you are asking a question.
Otherwise, yes, there is a sort of situation where they can be pretty pretentious but that's relatively rare
This really annoys me because why would you end a statement with a question mark.
Ambiguity?
Certain statements require it depending on the tone you're trying to present. Mostly when you end it with a question mark, though its not a statement anymore, but a question.
"You like cheese." - This person is saying you like cheese.
"You like cheese?" - This person is expressing disbelief that you like cheese. Probably following after "I like cheese".
lol
I like the Reverse Godwin technique?
I guess I'll bandwagon on the joke?
Why not?
...wait, that's not right... D:
I don't understand?
I see where you're coming from, it can come across as being a bit sarcastic, I'd never really thought about it though?
?The questi?on m?ark is? my friend?, I lik?e to put hi?m rand?oml?y in my po?sts wh?e?never I f?eel ?bored.
I'm not good at talking so like, don't make fun of me?
Upwards inflection?
The worst is when people think any sentence beginning with "I wonder" is a question. It's not. It's a statement that you do, in fact, wonder.
(SPOILER)I always feel like Brian Carper when I make a post like that. It's a little uncomfortable.
I thought turning all your statements into questions was really just insecurity that people wont accept your statements as true?
Now your telling me its because Im snotty or pretentious?
The point of question marks is to ask questions? It would not make much sense if it wasn't, and that would be quite confusing?
XD This is stupid?
word dawgs
I just add "yeah?" to the end of every statement so I don't sound weird, yeah? The butchering of the English language in this thread is quite saddening, yeah? It has feelings too, yeah? *punches self in face, yeah?*
I think exclamation points at the end of questions are worse. Do you think so too!!!!!
i like to end everything with an interrobang
You what!?
It's just not the same :(
Your mum goes to college? /:
Agree! I hate this "0 Hypothesis" or what you call them.
When you do a project and "Is it true that training makes you stronger?" or "Training doesn't make you stronger" And then write the project based on the statement.
Yeah, having a question mark after a statements makes me think that the statement is considered somewhat doubtful by the speaker. I also imagine it's said in AQI (Australian Question Intonation). Sometimes it can annoy me, especially when the statement is clearly something that shouldn't be doubted or when it's used excessively, but I've gotten used to it a bit now. I'm sure I do it myself sometimes. Things that are questions and aren't followed by a question mark annoy me more.
Reading this thread actually made me nauseous. I never knew I hated the statement-ending-with-a-question-mark so much!
I know some English people who would often complain about Australian people having that upward inflection at the end of some sentences, but that's often part of the accent.
The wiki article you have there, Heath, has a good explanation as to why it is used, 'Its use is also suggestive of seeking assurance from the listener that he is aware of what the speaker is referring to.'
