Disney Movie Marathon

Let's watch a major animated Disney film once a week in order from oldest to newest! I wanted a list of no more than twenty movies, so I excluded some.

I'm starting this Saturday, because I'll be seeing The Princess and the Frog on Friday/tomorrow! :sebastian:

I disagree with the lack of Rescuers and Emperor's New Groove. xP They are awesome! But, I won't be joining in anyhows. I'm on my own Disney binge atm. Watchin' Pocahontas right now.

You haven't seen Mulan?? It's one of my favorites.

I've seen all of these films more than twice, I don't have any of them on DvD :(

I might just break it to you right now; I've only seen 6 of the movies in that list previously. I was a Disney starved kid. All the more reason for me to participate in this, though!

Jeremy and I watched it just now. Pretty animation (possibly the most beautiful ever)! Grumpy is the best dwarf! The queen is probably the most evil Disney villain, too.

Yeah, not many of the Disney villains head straight into murder.

Especially the murder of a fourteen-year-old stepdaughter!

Plus, there are human remains in the dark depths of her castle. :kaocry2:

Aww, come on! Why didn't you include Pinocchio on that list? Don't you want to wish upon a star? :(

The idea behind the list is a nice one, though: it's always fun to revisit Disney's animated canon. :D

I really wish Disney had found a way to keep the prince escaping from the Queen's dungeon subplot in Snow White but sadly they had to cut it out. Thankfully they included a somewhat similar scene in Sleeping Beauty, though. :)

I forgot about all this shadowy stuff with the live orchestra. Love it.

This movie put me in a trance as a kid.

Love fantasia! It is amazing.

Oh! I need to watch this. Maybe later tonight, or tomorrow!

Wow, I saw Snow White in the theater before most of you were born.

I despise Bambi with a searing passion. I first saw it when I was about 6 or so and remember being really traumatized 4lief. Alice in Wonderland had the similar effect cuz Cheshire cat is really creepy, but I dealt with it because the storyline is cool.

I was really, really, really young when I watched Bambi, so I don't remember any of it. Watching it next week will be like watching it for the first time!

Even though it's not on the list, I watched Mulan II again. I forgot how much I disagree with the principles of that movie. This whole "my duty is to my heart" theme is just irritating. So we all follow our hearts and (SPOILER)marry only someone we love even when doing so basically guarantees that (SPOILER)your freaking country will be invaded and people will die seems pretty damn selfish to me. I do not think the Chinese would approve.

And, of course, (SPOILER)the dude the princess is arranged to marry, and her father, are made to be totally gross so that their choice to be selfish hos is further justified. Not to mention that the freaking bad guy is (SPOILER)Mushu, whose selfishness reaches epic proportions.

Other than disagreeing with the entire moral of the story, though, I thought it was pretty well executed. I still like it. *shrug*

I saw Bambi when I was 5! I cried a lot. During the sad sad sad scene, my Mom told me that Bambi's mom went away to go food shopping for Bambi and that she'd come back after we left the movie theatre. I was satisfied with that answer! XD

I wish I could appreciate old Disney the way you guys do. I love The Black Cauldron for its lack of song (I -really- don't like songs in old Disney movies) and epic fantasy nature

I'll maybe join in, in a few weeks. The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin were awesomeness :] And Mulan

3. Bambi

Bambi is boring.

The animation is really pretty, but the dinosaur segment was putting me to sleep.

I still can't believe that Mickey brutally murdered the broom that he brought to life. I was shocked to see such a thing.

Yeah that's some crazy :bou::bou::bou::bou: right there.

Mulan II was one of those DTV sequels that I actually liked. I found its story interesting (even if Mushu's role in it kind of surprised me) and the overall love stuff was handled well. The animation looked quite good throughout most of the film, and there were some beautiful songs mixed in. Joel McNeely's score is stunningly beautiful (almost on par with Jerry Goldsmith's score for the original Mulan), and Haley Westernra performing the love theme "Here Beside Me" is awesome. :love:

Fantasia is actually one of the few Disney films that nearly made me fall asleep whenever I've watched it all the way through. As much as I love the gorgeous animation, its seamless mixing with powerful music and the iconic scenes (e.g. Mickey as the Sorcerer's Apprentice, the dinosaurs during the Rite of Spring sequence, Chernabog during the Night on Bald Mountain sequence) it's also one of the longest Disney films and has some mind-numbing bits that really require one to be in a proper mood to fully appreciate them. :p

Bambi is one of my favourite Disney films. It has a wonderful and poignant story, some of the most stunning animation from Disney's Golden Age, great voice actors, fascinating and memorable characters, gorgeous songs and score ("Love is a Song" and "Looking for Romance (I Bring You a Song)" in particular are still some of my favourite Disney tunes) and beautiful impressionistic artwork. :)

Yeah. I might have appreciated Fantasia more on another day in a different mood, but today I honestly didn't have the patience to enjoy it as much as I felt I should.

I just watched Bambi. It's cute, but it could be better! I don't think I would watch it again.

I was disappointed that Flower grew up to have a manly voice. I thought that Flower was a girl.

I loved Fantasia :(

I always wanted to rent it because you know, I'm into classical music and :bou::bou::bou::bou:, but everyone's like 'it's not a REAL movie, you won't like it'

4. Cinderella

Lucifer is the true hero of Cinderella, and basically the only redeeming thing in the whole ugly film.

I always feel bad for the mice when they tear up her dress, they spent hours on it :( Also I always love it when she gets her new dress and the cute little choker and it's totally blinged out :heart: I am easily led by sparkles. Also the pumpkin journey home is lovely. Also yes lucifer is magnificent. Lady Tremaine is a perfect bitch0r character too.

I like the Brandy version of Cinderella too.

Cinderella 3 is pretty fab though.

Bambi was okay, I suppose. Didn't think much of it.

Cinderella was my favourite so far! I laughed at the king's dream.

I'm glad you like it! I like it, too! Cinderella isn't a character I love, but I do like her voice a lot.

It is from Cinderella! Right after she flees from the castle, the Grand Duke goes to inform the king who is sleeping. This is what he's dreaming of!

I thought maybe it would be from one of the sequels. I thought the king looked familiar though, but "who are those kids"

I absolutely hated Mulan II, its one of the worst (and by worst i think i mean best) examples of disney getting lazy with it's backgrounds. It looked like it was drawn as an episode of a spin off series rather than a movie, the detail just wasnt there. Also the whole love thing was horribly cliche'd (I know its stupid to complain about cliche in a disney movie but i felt like they kept rubbing it in my face). Only 2 or so songs are memorable.

On that note the only sequel which comes close to being better than the original imo is Jungle Book 2.

Cinderella is one of those fine Disney films. Mary Blair's art is pretty in its simplicity and gives the film a dreamlike quality. Cinderella herself is very relatable, and the mice, the king and the grand duke are great comic relief. The different levels of villainy in the film are also a refreshing touch as we get the wild antics of Luficer and then it's contrasted with that terrible, calculating menace of Lady Tremaine (the bit where she locks Cinderella in that room is still a chilling scene after all these years). The music is downright gorgeous with many memorable songs, particularly "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes", and the score is very pretty too. :D

As for Alice, for some reason it never really struck out as great to me. Perhaps it was because of its seeming randomness which makes it a difficult film to enjoy at least to me. It has beautiful animation and gorgeous music and some really fancy voice acting, but it doesn't quite hold up when compared to the highest echelon of Disney classics. Still, a film worth watching.

I like TENG for its silly premise and funny characters and scenes, and it has a kickass soundtrack. The one thing that makes me sad, though, is the "what might've been" scenario. Originally Disney envisioned the film as Kingdom of the Sun which was a lot more epic in scope, sort of like an Aladdin type of film in a way. Sadly that premise was scrapped halfway through production and TENG as we know it came to be. I wouldn't mind Disney revisiting the concept someday in the future because the story looked really interesting, :)

I'm glad they changed it to something funny. I still laugh out loud when I watch it. And I've watched it about 20 to 30 times, at a guess. Epic is good, but I can only watch epic a couple of times. Hilarious is awesome and I can watch it again and again. :D

While I do love the Alice in Wonderland world very much, I found this movie too dumbed down and hysterical. I don't mind dumbed down and hysterical in some cases, but I don't think it fit with Carroll's world very much. The 1999 live-action movie remains my favourite Alice adaptation to date!

Miranda Richardson made a far more entertaining queen. :D

I didn't consider Peter Pan to be very good before, but, of the films we've watched so far, I think it's second best only to Snow White. It suffers from poor music, but the movie itself is great! Tinkerbell is growing on me (she's really evil, you know).

The only thing Alice in Wonderland has going for it, I think, is the cuteness of Alice. I like the Cheshire Cat, too. Overall, Alice in Wonderland is a little boring, though.

What? No love for especially "You Can Fly!" and "The Second Star to the Right"? I love those two songs to bits.

Anyways, I think both the songs and score are very strong in Peter Pan even if they don't quite reach the heights of Disney's greatest music. Some of the unused songs are quite catchy too, particularly "Never Smile at a Crocodile". What I'd do to hear a Finnish version of that one!

What? That song was made tongue-in-cheek and it's so over the top that I just can't see (or hear) anything "offensive" about it (because that's what its function is, so yeah). The film makes fun about a lot of things, and Native Americans are no exception. It's a hilarious song, though. I really like that guy singing it. What a voice. Oh, and you really need to watch the movie: it's great. :p

Anyways, as for Lady and the Tramp: This is one of my favourite Disney movies. It's a wonderful commentary of the times back then and has one of the most controversial plot developments in a Disney movie. The scene where Jock and Trusty consider proposing to Lady to save her honour (since she got pregnant, y'know) is a very touching and adult scene which I've learned to appreciate the more I watch this movie.

The characters are wonderfully nuanced and memorable, and the animation is downright stunning in many scenes with vivaciousness rarely seen today. Just check the famous spaghetti scene or Tramp's furious battle with the rat. The plot itself is quite interesting with nice developments and it keeps one in its grip.

And the music? Oh boy, the music. The score is very sweet with lots of themes and is heartwarming most of the time and furious when it needs to be. Also, there's a reason why people keep talking about "Bella Notte" which is one of the most memorable love songs in Disney's animated canon. There are many other underrated songs, particularly "La la lu" which accompanies the almost magical scene with Lady and the baby. Speaking of voices, the voice actors do a great job in their roles and bring warmth and depth to their already fascinating characters.

Overall Lady and the Tramp is a fine movie which every Disney fan should watch. :)

I forgot about this, with school starting again. I'll try and catch up!

I might have seen Lady and the Tramp, or at least parts of it, now that I think about it. I guess we'll see!

I really dig Disney films but Sleeping Beauty is not among my favorites. Really the only thing I find truly memorable about it is the visual style and the villain. Aside of Maleficent, the characters are terribly forgettable. Soundtrack is decent, but again, not among Disney's finest. That's not to say it's a bad film; it isn't.

The film is gorgeous, like watching a moving painting. If you can see it on the bluray Disney released it on a year or so ago, you should; the level of detail in the film, for a traditionally animated film (of it's age no less) is simply incredible.

I don't like it at all, to be honest.

I haven't seen Sleeping Beauty in about 10 to 15 years but I always remember enjoying the scene where they are dancing and the little fairies keep changing the colour of her dress.

Ugh now I want to watch it.

And Prince Phillip's (Sleeping Beauty) japanese voice actor is Sephiroth's voice actor, Toshiyuki Morikawa. At least in Birth by Sleep.

There are many disney characters who have the same voice actors.

I watched it a couple of weeks ago.

I might. I'll never be put into that position so I can't say for sure, but I can't imagine sacrificing the lives of thousands just to keep from being married to someone I didn't like.

OK so I watched it. I haven't ever seen the whole things so it was pretty much new to me. And it could have all been solved had they just invited poor maly to the party.

I like how the prince is actually doing something unlike many other Disney films. He doesn't just marry her at the end "OH MY true love!" No he's like "smurf this :bou::bou::bou::bou: I want my lady!" and fights his way to her. Phillip is an awesome prince because of this.

I love the animation in this one. You have to give props to old school disney cause it's beautifully done.

The way Aurora moves is hypnotic.

Is it just me or do all Disney owls turn out to be pimps

Ah, Sleeping Beauty. Although Aurora's mostly a cardboard cutout, there are a few scenes that make me like her, and Mary Costa's singing performance is freaking phenomenal. Animation and art look gorgeous (it cost a lot of money, and it shows!), the music is sweepingly touching, and the villain is among Disney's most memorable.

I still gasp in awe at the dragon fight scene, but some of Maleficent's most terrifying scenes were the subtle gestures and looks she had (just check the bit where Phillip gets captured). The combination of Eleanor Audley's terrific voice work and Marc Davis's stunning animation elevated Maleficent into the cast of epic villainesses. It's quite creepy how Audley voiced both Cinderella's Lady Tremaine and Maleficent in this film; it shows her skills as an actress.

I liked the three fairies. They're basically the protagonists of the film. Prince Phillip also has a great personality and has some great character-driven scenes. ;)

The soundtrack is one of the few cases where Disney actually used an earlier composition. The way composer George Bruns adapted Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty ballet into a film score was a daunting task and should be commended. As much as I love Tchaikovsky's music, I have to agree that it's not Disney's finest, but it's still a hauntingly beautiful work, IMHO.

It looks very gorgeous on DVD that I got as a present. Perhaps once I'll have enough money I'll consider double-dipping. This film certainly deserves nothing less. :D

Definitely. The animation is top-notch, and I really dig Eyvind Earle's visual style. Too bad its lush, angular look kind of drowns the animation in a way and doesn't work as well as it does in stills. Still, Sleeping Beauty is among the most visually stunning films in the Disney canon. :)

Vertical stripes wouldve been more slimming

This movie never appealed to me. I've seen it a few times but it just felt so... dull. One thing I always liked about Disney movies was how colourful they were, but this one bucked that trend.

It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but I really like its style.
