I'm so desperate for conversation with anyone that if I were to be asked something like "how's your mum?" I'd probably take it as a serious question. Seriously though, I don't strike up conversation with people unless I'm drunk, or they talk to me first.

I'm not very good at initiating conversations, but if there's an awkward silence going on I'll usually just say "Good day for weather."
I seriously try to talk about pokemon in any conversation. I was involved in a super cereal conversation about [see my eoeo post] with a girl at the office, and I posited that it was necessary for a girl to like pikachu for me to like her back.
Awesome.
I'll try to talk about Formula One. If they're not familiar with the sport, I fall back on rugby league.
If it's a girl, I do a really good job of pretending I've watched True Blood.
