So I looked up this anzan technique on wikipedia, but it didn't say much beyond "it's basically imagining an abacus in your head." Well that's smurfing helpful. I'd be interested in reading up on it if it allows kids to add that fast, unless those two are prodigies or something.
I think the idea is that you start off using the abacus, and get so used to that, that one day you decide you don't need the abacus and do it from muscle memory?
I think a way to do it would be, if you have a good memory, to actually memorize all possible additions, somewhat like Allie says here.Quote:

How fast it would actually take me though, I haven't the faintest clue. I've become so used to using a calculator to solve stuff that it's retarded. I've taken plenty of higher level math classes, but that just made me use a calculator more, since it was about learning all the new problems and not how well you can add or the other basic functions.
I think you guys are missing the fact that not only are they adding this :bou::bou::bou::bou: up in their heads at such a speed, they're doing it while playing shiritori. :|
I can take derivatives in my head as long as they are not too complicated if that counts for anything. :p
Shiritori is fun. :D It's the easier task of the two.
