What does England mean to you?

So I was thinking about my country today, and seriously started to ask myself what's so special about it. I mean, when I think of America, say, I think of the land of dreams and whatnot - land of milk and honey..or something like that. I've always thought of it as one of those places you had to go to before you died. And loads of places have really nice accents, and usually bear good looking people with nice skin :mad:.

What do you foreigners tend to think about when you think of "England". No football talk please. It's embarrassing. If you (for some reason) want to move to England or come on holiday, why exactly? Take me back home with you :( I'm here against my will!!

If you reside in England atm, do you like it here? Why, you madman. Would you rather be somewhere else?

Also, not admitting that because it's false. Germany wouldn't have been defeated if it wasn't for the Russian and Americans, absolutely not. But would Britain have been invaded? Would it bollocks! Germany tried, and they failed. And they failed before either of the two great powers got involved.

The battle of Britain was an unexpected loss to Germany. He then made his biggest mistake and invaded Russia. History's biggest lesson is you do not want to ever invade Russia. Napoleon also tried and failed a hundred thirty years earlier. In fact the only one to actually succeed in a war invading that area was Genghis Khan, and he came from the other side to invade.

The Royal Navy was the biggest navy in the world at that time. However, if the channel was not there, it would not have mattered. Germany's navy was miniscule due to the Treaty of Versaille's restrictions.

But as far as landing craft and motherships FOR landinmg craft, they all had to be made during the war. They did not really exist before then due to their specialist role. These were mostly paid for by US dollars as Britain, was broke.

If I had to side with anyone then I guess 'd be a Russian. 'm a raging socialist. Not so far left that I wouldn't allow you to own your own tractors mind, but still. Anti Facist Anti Capitalist.

My perception of England is COMPLETELY different from what it was before I came here. I thought it was quaint and grey with polite people. Not true.

In my 6+ months of living within England, here are my thoughts:

England is inconvenient and has rude children and I want to slap them. I like the weather, but everything closes at 5 pm and the people are extremely rude in the built-up Southern areas. The food gives me the runs, constantly. (TMI!!!) When people go out, the girls wear skirts and dresses so short their clams show. I was shocked. They wear this even in snowy weather. And I'm from NYC originally, so I'm not from a quaint area by any means.

I've been laughed at often for being overly polite. I had thought coming here that I would have to be on my best manners to fit in, but it's not so. Saying "have a nice day" is considered an overkill here, which is bizarre for me.

With that said, all of my best friends and people I love the most are from this country, so I keep find myself coming back. When I'm in the Midlands, I quite like England overall, but I hated the South, as I said. My favorite area in England is Leicester, by far, which people would probably find hilariously bizarre.

Rye, I think your problem with politeness may be the divide between America and England of positive and negative politeness. That is, you Americans are positively polite, meaning you're more open and friendly, where as we're negatively polite and so try and avoid conflict and making people lose face as much as possible, which can seem a bit aloof.

I live in the South of England and have never really been anywhere North, so I can't comment on that. I don't think it's that bad down here, it's probably the least violent place in the country, it's pretty boring but the little part where I live in my city has nice people, that is until you go over to where my school is where it's full of chavs and pikeys. :stare:

What an ignorant person you are. We all know that the war was not won or lost by 1 nation but the collective efforts of many, mainly Russia but England served a massive prt of the war effort with its navy, army and air force. As well as our involvment with Enigma and intelligence.

People like Churchill stood up to Hitler long before he went to war and had Chamberlain done the same we never would have had war. Russia did not enter the war until Germany had broken its non aggression pact.

I can see already the mind blowing ignorance that you possess to disregard the efforts of England and try to paint it as if we did nothing in that war, it is not only an insult to me and my country but to the thousands who died, you ignorant sack.

As for Ireland, a country divided and yet you choose to play the blame game. protestants, Catholics and all the other troubles over there are Ireland doing, and yet I see the Irish parking down the road from me time and again in their caravan's. It can't be that bad here.

It is frustrating when people try to say England played a minor part when it is clear we didn't.

Onto other issues, England has become a dirty word because people want us to say sorry for 10000000 things from the past, but you may as well start blaming apes for hunting the banana, it is irrelevant.

England created a number of sports including football and Cricket, sports people enjoy yet still knock our country. We were and will be again, pioneers. My country has done a lot for this world, as much as people like to knock us for things we aren't proud of.

In the end, like the poster above, it all comes down to jealousy of my country. USA get their fair share of jealousy too, as does any nation that has pioneered, led or advanced mankind.

My country has nothing to be sorry for. Everyone should be grateful that we were around. I won't deny England today has problems, sadly caused by this defeatist attitude and poor politicians. Society as a whole has dumbed down and England as it was is lost, but it will be back.

I am grateful to live here, I suggest the poster above just learn to deal with us, and if he hates us so much, stop playing football and everything else we invented.

From what I experienced in Manchester/Blackpool area (though I didn't go out much when i was there), people were pretty well polite and friendly, even the immigrations officer when she wasn't interrogating me. It probably really is just the location, same as any place.

For example, when I went to NYC, I accidentally bumped into someone while briskly walking to my next destination and I apologized but she just barreled on passed me. Around where I live, a smile, quick apology, and a shared laugh, then departure when such a thing happens.

Then again, NYC is a very busy place, and Northwest Ohio as a whole is not in the least :redface:

People who love England probably haven't traveled much. As I type this all I can see out of my window is grey skies, grey towerblocks and a few shady characters loitering around my house. Kind of sums up England in a nutshell really.

Ok now we're setting the mood correct for this post. Cuch I love you normally but right now you're talking so much outta your ass when you speak I see right through you like a damn polo mint.

Going in to world war 2 which btw, England initiated because we refused to back down over the ultimatum of "Invade Poland and well it's war" England had a much smaller military force than Germany at the start of both world wars however England was world class in terms of military size. We were in fact THE most professional army in the world at the time. Our airforce rightfully scared the crap out of the Lufftwaffe because whilst they had the machines and the pilots to launch a blitzkrieg (which translates literally to lightning strike) which could crush the opposition of a country in a matter of hours or days. (look at how fast the blitzkrieg tactic worked against France, Poland, Austria and other nations in Europe which fell to the Nazi war machine) and the tactics to win the british RAF had something what made their previous successes moot, they had radar, planes on an equal playing field and more experience than any of the previous airforces the lufftwaffe had come across in the war so far. They also were fighting for their homes, their families and I don't know about you but if I was flying for that? Knowing do or die, victory or your family could be blown to hell? I would fly my smurfing ass off regardless of whether it was safe to do so and if I made it back alive well that'd be a bonus.

England never fell to the Germans and not because Hitler didn't try, he failed because he wanted to use the same tactic as had worked on mainland europe on England. Bomb us in to a submissive state (infrastructure and industry was his primary targets and the morale of the populace a close secondary) and then march in the tanks and infantry. His tactic failed at the get go because even discounting the fact that he made his foolish move to attack Russia at this time too (you don't fight Russia and America at the same time, you get them to fight each other and mop up the survivors ~ Quote in the Tom Clancy book The Sum of All Fears says this nicely, though the quote easily can be changed to the west or England considering the time point we were talking about, Russian strength lay in numbers of "disposable" troops they could basically force in to taking and holding objectives by sheer force of bodies and will, British strength lay in tactics and equipment) Russian forces didn't really press Germany back from Stalingrad until after D-Day when Hitler was forced to move more and more infantry away from the eastern front to protect Berlin from the advancing allied forces to his west. Though Russia did force the Germans out of Russia and all the way back to Poland they did not do so alone. Eventually the men of Russia would have been exhausted and the Germans would have won had it not been for D-Day which is way after the Germans had failed to defeat the English, in fact by then the war was all but over one way or another he was already defeated.

England succeeded where others failed not just because of the channel but because they were professionals who realized the value of the tactical withdrawl from Dunkirk and who had saved their planes and kept their pilots training for such an occassion. Our pilots were as good as they could get, their training solid and whilst the tactics weren't always sound we had more victories in the air than any other country fighting against the Nazi warmachine.

I will also point out that if England had fallen to the Nazi warmachine, just how long do you believe your precious Ireland would've lasted? I'd measure it in the number of hours it would take for Hitler to have his planes refuelled and reloaded and some ships on the otherside of the country to invade you I'll give it 24 hours from official surrender of England to the defeat of Ireland. That is if Ireland didn't surrender immediately upon England falling to the Germans.

With units like the SAS, SBS, Ghurka's and the Para's we still are one of the most professional and powerful armies in the world even though we are still much smaller than armies of many countries. God forbid being on the receiving end of such forces even in modern warfare, Just look to our recent historical victories in theaters where we fought alone. Our parachute regiment earnt a truly fearsome reputation against the Argentinian's in the Falklands war. Hell we have the Ghurka's and frankly the idea of pissing them off makes me more afraid than the idea of pissing the SAS or SBS off. Our special forces for years have educated and cross trained other nations special forces including those of America, Germany and Austrailia (all of whom are known for having some of the toughest special forces in the world but they still have a healthy respect for the training our SAS and SBS boys go through to be the best)

Ofcourse Cuch you could be trolling us brits or you could just be acting like an ass but just because the irish got the raw end of a deal you gotta think that without us, you'd be speaking as much german as any of us.

England to me is home, I've travelled to a few countries now and whilst yes, I could probably live somewhere else and enjoy it England is home. I laugh when people like Dennis ect say bad breath because yeah some people do but so do people in their countries too and believe me having served enough tourists I can tell you aside from old people, the smelliest are always tourists :P

I don't always like England at times I wish I could just flee to any other place on earth as it could be better than here. However I know if I went there and done that I would in all likely see that "the grass is always greener on the otherside" visiting a country is very different from living in one and whilst many people visit America ask them how many of them would want to actually live there, to abide by the laws and to have the same opportunities as the americans there. Ask them if they'd like to give up things like the NHS (bad mouth it all we like, we get world class medical care for "free" just by paying our taxes which really aren't even the highest in Europe) most people would say no.

I stand by my position, however, that if it was not for the English Channel, Hitler would have swept through France, Belgium, Holland AND Britain in May 1940.

The British cause was helped by Hitler in the Battle of Britain when he switched from bombing RAF facilities and ports to bombing cities in response to the RAF bombing of Berloin. RAF papers stated that it was on its knees until then.

I am not taking ANYTHING away from the heroic deeds of the British back then. Of course I'm not. I'm making an objective viewpoint that is hard to argue against. Churchhill said in 1940 'Thank God for the French Army'. It was huge, well equipped but badly run. The German's cut throuigh it like knife through butter. In 1940 Britain was struggling almost everywhere. She had inadequate tanks, an aging Navy and an air force on its knees. I'm merely stating Hitler's forces would have oberrun the UK if that land mass was still there joining it to Europe.

I kinda agree with Rye that the southern part is very rude and the girls do wear micro skirts in cold weather..Hell girls did that in toronto as well so its not really that much of a shocker....

about the trampy girls, yeah unfortunatley there are quite a few. Bad food. English food is the absolute worst food I have ever experienced in my life. Sorry guys, but I totally despised it. :sad:

Great sense of humor. The English are a riot and a half. Never before has someone insulted me to my face and I feel all the better for it.

The English are normally friendly, but mean English people are about as mean as you can get.

When I went to London, people were tanning 70 degrees farenheit weather. LOLOLOLOLOLOL. Sorry, but I find that so hilarious.

Much better music. Seriously, I really do not like modern American music, but when I listened to English radio, I enjoyed it so much more than when I normally listened to the radio. And no Nickelback! :D

The food problem extends to Ireland too. If I lived in America I'd be a fat bastard. In the 3 weeks I was there last July I gained 6 pounds. Your food..places? have ze tastiest food.

We've also taken pleasure out of beating them in cricket and rugby in the past, though that's not so much the case anymore. It's also the home of Top Gear which is just about my favourite show (the Australian version isn't as good).

Mo, no one else's version of Top Gear is as good as the original. You just cannot beat Clarkson, May and Hammond and lets not forget The Stig.

Haha, good thread. I like England, and like any country it has its good and bad points. I lived in London up until a month ago; which was cool. Nothing like being where loads of stuff is going on.

I think the problem with English food is we have very little that's traditionally ours and a lot of it is disgusting or not that common any more (like blood pudding).

When I think of England, I think of colonies, French hatred, pluck, inspiration, all of which has kind of disappeared because Health & Safety has gone mad and prevents you guys from doing anything cool.

But the place is still cool. Top Gear is obviously awesome. The football clubs are great (the national team is another story).

I agree with Rye about people in the South, although I think that's more London than the South as a whole. Manchester was much friendlier.

EDIT: And using the Channel as the reason that Germany didn't win the war is like saying that the Atlantic Ocean is the reason America gained its independence and Russia being cold is the reason both Napoleon and Hitler had epic fails. True, but it's kind of a natural feature you expect when invading a country.

Where to start... being from the south myself and always managing to say "have a nice day" to EVERYONE I speak to I have to say not all us southerners are rude, however I do find that most people do not wish other to have a nice day and agree in general that there are alot of rude people out there, though in retrospect I have seen alot of people who are the same in different area's from the whole world and while there are a many places I would like to go on holiday there isn't many places I would rather live... considering it cost so much money for medical bills in other country's there are not alot of places that are better off.

Taking into consideration the fact that I know someone who in his country was a qualified biologist and ran his own campus moved into England to take a job as a Pizza Hut Support Manager where the money isn't all that great I would have to say there are hundreds of places I would not want to live in, and apparently there are alot of people who though not being from England feel the same way.

TBH I find working as the only English person in in my shop to quite refreshing as the people I work with all like me and the way I carry myself in my roll as manager at Pizza Hut and on the whole are a friendly bunch of people as you are like to meet.

As far as English food goes, you really shouldn't damn our country based on the limited experence's that you have had with out food, just come round my place and I will cook up a storm for ya :bigsmile:

So in short: I love my country and lot of people being from this country or otherwise feel the same as I do, and our food be it curry or roast dinner we do know how to cook, you just need to know where to go.

EDIT: with reguards to our weather, I remember there was more rain in Spain (or some other country well known for its sun) then there was in England last year (or the year before, can't remember the date to well.

Well this is more of a European thing in general, I pick England because English is the native language and the only one I speak. I want to see some of the especially old architecture. I'd be neat to see buildings that are centuries and centuries old! USA was only established about 300 or so years ago. We're still a baby country!

Actually that isn't true. In 1908 parliament declared that the Union Jack should be known as the national flag.
I found this quote on a website:

Honestly, as a Canadian I think that England contained some of our ancestors and that your (our) queen is just a relic from past. Basically right now you mailed us your lawn ornament and she's on display in our country for some reason.

A great deal of Canada agrees with me on that last point (that the Queen is pointless).

I also refer you to Cz and my discussions (although how much of it was in jest I don't know) about the Royal Family.

I live in England and whilst i call it :bou::bou::bou::bou:e the majority of the time i guess theres far worse places i could be right now.

We have some fantastic comedy shows, over here and i find our tv to be infinately better than the American tv programme quality and picture quality too.
When I was in New York last year i found the quality of the TV to be shocking, looed like it was all filmed 10 years ago!!

I do love England though, always will do, its my home :D
