Horror movies! What are your favorite horror films? What do you consider the worst? Any in particular you'd like to see that you haven't?

I've been watching a bit of foreign horror lately. These are my favorite that I can think of right now.

High Tension
Martyrs - absolutely awful. Beyond a doubt to be what I consider the most visually gruesome scenes I've ever witnessed.

The Ruins and The Happening are the worst I've ever seen, aside from all the films Mystery Science Theater feature. Drag Me To Hell was awful, too (shame on you, Sam Raimi).

I've been told I should see Cannibal Holocaust and Rosemary's Baby. I've never seen classics like Psycho or The Exorcist, though I'd like to, as well as The Wicker Man.

I get very into scary movies. I grip my seat or whoever is closest to me. I scream and jump. Afterward, I'm not much bothered, but during, I'm sure I'm pretty annoying in theaters.

Topic #2 - what are some scenes you consider to be the scariest? Remember to use spoiler tags if you're going to give anything away!

Ahh I know what you're talking about with Martyrs. That scene where she was (SPOILER)pulling out those things from the gross girl's iron mask was one of the most physically disturbing scenes I've seen. And where mentioned girl was (SPOILER)trying to cut off her own arm. Ugh xD

[Rec] is a good movie. Pretty damn scary D:

As for crappy horror movies, all I can think of right now is Mirrors. That was really tacky. I'm sure there are others that I've simply repressed, though.

The French are the best at making horror movies! "Inside" and "Frontier(s)" are worth a watch too.

Frontier is actually on my to-watch list! I have quite a few, but didn't want to list them allll.

I'm a terrible coward so I don't watch much horror but The Thing is one of my favourites, as is The Fly (the David Cronenberg version). I remember being terrified by Candyman. And it's a boring choice but the Japanese film Ring is great.

If Scream counts, definitely that, though it caused a lot of rubbish to come out in its wake (including Scream 3).

I kinda liked Paranormal Activity. Cloverfield was a good concept. I love Final Destination as well.

I watched The Strangers the other day. The entire time I was like, "WHY ARE YOU DOING THAT?! NO, DON'T LEAVE THE ROOM!"

[Rec] Was pretty great. The Spanish version that is.

For horror, not jumps, not scares, not torture porn, but for genuine horror that stays with you, there is one king and his name is The Thing. Dear god. Never have I seen such a beautiful example of paranoia and fear and tension. I think one thing that helps a great deal is that people aren't retarded in the movie, they actually act fairly sensibly throughout. And it does not avail them.

I loved Drag Me to Hell. It was so funny. The Evil Dead series is great too. Hrm, let's see. Paranormal Activity meh. The Strangers was horrible. Midnight Meat Train was meh. Audition was interesting, but not my favorite from Takeshi Miike. Haute Tension was fantastic. The original Psycho is one of the best horror/thrillers of all time.

It's really intense. =O

There are a few very unnecessary, overly gruesome parts, though (concerning wolves).

The series is not what it once was, but the original Saw is one of my all time favourite movies, let alone horror. Also, The Orphanage made me cry, such a beautiful horror movie. :'(

Was it The Hottie and The Nottie? I haven't seen it but I've seen a lot of reviews call it a horror.

Is it House of Wax? I don't remember how she died in that, but I remember she was just awful.

High Tension was SO GOOD. When the twist happened at the end I had no bloody idea and was totally WTF MY HEAD OMG

There needs to be more films like that. I like a good slasher but HT made me :mymelomfg:

As for Cannibal Holocaust, it isn't a very horror movie type of thing. You may not like it, tbh. If you are going to watch it, watch it like 'day of the woman' in that it is historically relevant.

The only scene in film history I've watched that genuinely scared me is [get this]: (SPOILER)the painting that moves in the hotel: in the mouth of madness. After seeing the first scene I could not look at that painting ever again. WTF!

Moving paintings are ALWAYS terrifying. Even friendly ones.

Yeah, High Tension is a really good movie. Funny thing is that when I watched it, by coincidence the last two movies I watched utilised the same twist ( namely: character x is actually an alternate personality of main character y! and when x hurt y it was actually y hurting him/herself!! [ the other movies wereFight Club and Martyrs :D]).

I really love horror films when something really creepy happens that not everyone notices.

I remember watching this one film (which I sadly cannot remember)which was just another horror film until at one point the camera panned across a character speaking and right in the background was a painting of a woman in normal dress with a normal look on her face. Two minutes later the camera panned back briefly to the character and the woman had a horrifying look on her face and was in a different pose.

I wasn't sure if I saw right, it was creepy as hell. They never mention it or bring it up in the film again.

Mentioning a few that hasn't been mentioned.

Misery, Orphan, The Others.

All of them with a strong element that not many horror movies are blessed with; good acting.

Since I first watched it many years ago, Kathy Bates terrifies me no matter what role she plays. Each time someone opposes her character in the slightest I expect her to get out a sledgehammer.

Misery was so good. Silence of the Lambs was also great though that's more of a thriller than a horror...unless if you count the cannibal scene.

Spice World was pretty scary. (I liked it.)

I hate blood and gore in horror films and I can't watch films witho horrow that isn't psychological. THere are two famous films from the last twenty years that fit this description.

Yea it was called that.. Oh don't get me wrong...That movie was awful..But that scene was the best!! XD Off with her head...

She even gets loped off in the previous season of Supernatural...

I tell ya, a good Paris Hilton is a dead... When it comes to horror movies!!


Donny Darko was particularly good movie..But I don't if I would classify that as horror.

Scream was is a neo classic for horror genre.

Just finished watching "Frozen", and it was okay. There were some good moments, but for me, it didn't really thrill me all that much. Also, Shawn's character was really annoying, and I kinda grinned when...yeah, so it was good, but not nearly as good as "Canyon", which is a very similar movie, only that it is taking place in the Grand Canyon.

The Nightmare On Elm Street (the original) and New Nightmare

Audition (The only film to legitimately creep me out.)

Paranormal Activity (Though I thought the theatrical cut ending looked really fake and wasn't remotely scary. The director's cut ending was creepier.)

I liked the concept of the original Final Destination, though I felt I would have liked the movie more, if they had kept the alternate ending and the deleted scenes that led to it, which were provided on the DVD, rather than making it solely about the interesting ways for people to die. Human drama was sacrificed to make it easier to franchise.


That's about all I can think of right now.

I don't think The Day After Tomorrow really counts, but there were a few moments in there that did it for me. Nature can be every bit as scary as some dude running around with a chainsaw.

I loved The Orphanage! It was beautiful and sad and just great. <3

I thought High Tension was okay,but they gave away the whole big twist at the very beginning of the movie when (SPOILER)the main character talks about her dream of being a murderer in the car. Seriously?

Drag Me To Hell was pretty entertaining and what more can you ask in a horror movie?

The Exorcist, Seven and Jacob's Ladder are my horror movie classics.
Although they are fairly slow, the visuals are so haunting that they will stay with you forever.

I forgot about Seven! I realllly liked Seven.

I don't know. I just found Drag Me To Hell to be awful. The best part about it was Jason Long, and he is not the best part about many movies.

I saw The Last Exorcism recently. It made me jump quite a bit, and it was pretty intense, but then ending ruined it for me. Other than that, I mostly liked it.

I thought Drag Me To Hell was great, and so is Rosemary's Baby - if you haven't seen it yet, do it!

How could you guys miss out on the classic Texas Chainsaw Massacre? the original when Leatherface (SPOILER)jumps out and hacks Franklin nearly in half with his chainsaw

Or another classic comes to mind: Braindead, one of the funniest horror's I've seen like the scene in the house when (SPOILER)Lionel runs through the house with the petrol lawnmower and kicks the dismembered body parts into the kitchen where Paquita picks them up and puts them through a blender lol

I hate it when things are spoiled from the beginning. eg starcraft 2

I should re-watch HT just to see what might be 'really' happening rather than what appears to be happening.

If there's one thing I love more than a horror movie, it's a really bad horror movie. Luckily for me, those aren't tough to find. I was watching Jason Goes to Hell (a great movie if you like a deliciously awful flick) and right from the start, it was typical and stupid. Generic hot girl goes to the cabin by herself and gets naked for a shower. Typical. Then the power goes out. Typical. Then she puts on nothing but a towel and walks around the house, wide-eyed and scared, trying to find whatever caused it. Typical. Then Jason comes out and throws her over a balcony and she starts running out into the woods, falling completely onto her face every ten feet, just like you were talking about, Shorty. It was like they wanted you to know what would happen before it did. It wasn't done well, but it was definitely golden, purely for the comedic factor and predictability.

As for my favorite horrors, those aren't really scary either. The Evil Dead series will always be my top favorite when it comes to horror, if you can even call them that. I think a close second down the list would have to be The Shining. A young Jack Nicholson is one of the best assets to any film in cinematic history. And I definitely enjoy something that will crawl into your mind and have you creeped out for the rest of the night, as opposed to something that will jump out and startle you.

ALSO I cannot ever re-watch the japanese film Ring - the feeling of doom and dread that is generated throughout the film, and watching the television scene at the end truly creeped me out and I cannot bear to see the television (in the film) - since the tv shows up many times in the film I usually quit long before the actual scary scene.

It's funny bc usually horror movies get less scary as time passes.

Just watched "Trick R' Treat", and it was half-awesome. Not much of a story going on, but I suppose that's what they intended. :D

Trick R' Treat is the best movie to watch around Halloween time. It's a tradition I intend to start!

I'm more a fan of creepy movies as opposed to gory horror movies.

Some of my favorites:

1) Peeping Tom: Made at the same time as Psycho, but reviled instead of praised. The killer is one of the most sympathetic monsters in movie history. It makes a direct connection between his voyeurism of other characters and ours of his life.

2) One Hour Photo: Purely psychological horror, but still a compelling account of one man's gradual descent into total insanity. One of Robin Willaims most intense and best roles.

3) Eyes without a Face: Not just a song title, a demented surgeon tries to (SPOILER)restore his daughter's face using transplants, from live victims. Not particularly bloody, but very squirm-inducing.

4) Hellraiser II: Yes it falls prey to some silly horror conventions and is too gory in places, it nevertheless does two things really well: it has the best treatment of the Cenobites, and it has an awesome dipiction of hell and Leviathan.

5) Event Horizon: Visually a masterpiece, plotwise a mess. Love the ship and design.

6) Silent Hill: Same as above. Beautifully done visually, huge plot issues. It's worth rewatching just to drink in the ambience.

7) An American Werewolf in London: One of the best balancing acts between horror and comedy. My favorite part is the way the wisecracking best friend (SPOILER)comes back as a wisecracking zombie.

I actually quite liked Paranormal Activity. I saw it when a friend hosted a Halloween party and showed the bootleg copy with the original ending (someone described the theatrical ending to me, and it sounded pretty sucky, in case anyone is interested in seeing this).

I absolutely cannot stand gory horror. I just can't look at it. So when something like Saw is on (Saw is super gory, right? I didn't watch.) I spend half of the movie with my eyes shut. Such a waste of time!

I don't know - It might be because I'm sick, or because I let it get in my head, but Paranormal Activity spooked me out at night. I was sick so I woke up a few times, then I kept imagining somebody was behind me/in front of me/at the foot of my bed (I tend to do this regardless of scary movies - I'll imagine something watching me, and in the dark, it keeps increasing in how it manifests in my mind until I start to actually freak out)

I don't like fixing it - it's pretty cool to wallow in non-logical frivolousness.

No other film can do that to me because most hollywood horror has a physically manifested entity as the antagonist, and unless I see the guy/bat/thing in front of me, I won't be scared by such movies.

[this is also why the movie リング scares the pee out of me :(
