FFVI Live Wallpaper for Android

Hey guys sorry if this is spammy (probably is by definition), but FFVI is a gravity well of nostalgia from my SNES days so I made an Android wallpaper with one of my favorite activities, flying the airship around! Check it out if you're interested. It's free, no ads or other crap:

Only has the world of balance for now. Working on getting the world of ruin map and the falcon working. I used OpenGL to try to recreate the mode7 effect and used an additive gradient to simulate the horizon shine from the original. My only complaint is it looks a bit too sharp. I need to find a way to make it look more low-res.

Let me know what you think. I was thinking about making one emulating the intro (Terry, Vicks, and Wedge walking in mechs).

This is actually really good. Might I suggest being able to adjust altitude?

Yeah, I actually have the graphics for climbing/diving already in place, I just need to figure out how to align the 3d ground plane with the sky and additive gradient planes. Once that's in place I'll issue an update.

Heh, I figure this would be more of a show off to your friends with iPhones type of background.

I've mostly implemented climbing and diving but find it to be a little disorienting. I'll probably make it more subtle than the game and have the option to turn it off.

That is really cool. It is tough to compete with my Suikoden IV Rune of Punishment background for the long term, but I will have to download this.

Very cool. The tilt control is not functioning on my G2x. I really don't care much, cause this is awesome. Downloaded and +1'ed.

This is pretty cool, indeed. I can't get the airship to tilt or turn on my Galaxy S2, either though.

Hmm, someone with a galaxy tab reported a problem where it was always turning left. Are you guys have problems with it turning the wrong way or not turning at all? Did you make sure to set the steer method to tilt under the settings?

Oh awesome, well that's one less thing to worry about, maybe. A guy post a comment on the market about it always turning left on his tablet. I think it's because the aspect ratio makes it always turned sideways, maybe. I'll make a tilt calibration tool I think just in case.

You can also set it to autopilot if you want it to turn randomly on its own.

Dude, seriously. Tilt steering rocks! I am all pimping around the WoB in the blackjack, bringing back some of my best memories in life (Sorry kids).

I would say this is not the greatest thing ever, but my wrist hasn't been this excited since I learned how to lock my bedroom door.

Seriously, this is like the coolest thing ever!
Also, I'm not asking for any favors, but it just occurred to me how kickass a World of Ruin version would be. That's just me thinking aloud though; the fact that you made the blackjack a wallpaper is great enough!

Hah, I didn't even know there were settings. Problem solved, and now it's even cooler than ever.

I was thinking this too. You could even do something like on December 21st, change it to the WoR. Or Day/night settings for WoB/WoR. :)

Can you set up the wallpaper to show a wide screen view when the phone is flipped? Not sure if that's possible.

Hmm. I'm not sure actually. I think some phones support rotated backgrounds, but the two phones I have access to (Nexus One and Evo) don't do that. Is your phone capable of that?

Actually on thinking about it, I might be able to manually invoke a rotated view by reading the accelerometer values. I'll look into that and see if I can get it to work.

The wide screen works for my phone when I use the keyboard, but it constantly steers to the left when I hold it, so when I don't feel like steering, I put it on auto pilot.

Ahh, OK I think I got it. I might need you to test some changes later then. But it sounds like the rendering flips correctly, I just need the Accelerometer to adjust as well. Thanks!

Alright, tilt should work now with rotated screen. If your phone or device doesn't autorotate the home screen then obviously this wasn't an issue. However, I downloaded a program called ADW Launcher that let's me have an auto-rotated background. I used this for testing and steering seems to be working great, plus it looks cooler widescreen I think.

Thanks! I'm currently implementing a minimap which is nice cuz you can steer to the places where you want to go. Should be included in an update tomorrow.

I've noticed that eventually I run out of map after a few hours of leaving the phone on, and the Blackjack is just flying over a blank space endlessly. The sky's still there, the Blackjack is still there, and still moving normally, but there's simply blank space underneath. The only way to get things back to normal is turning the phone off, which I don't usually do.

Yeah I noticed that too, but the ground will come back..eventually. Or I just change the wallpaper and change it back. I'm looking into it though. I think it's some optimization that's come back to haunt me..

Just issued an update to the market that fixes that issue.

Also, there is a minimap :tongue:

Oh yes, this is awesome. And I splurged on the $0.99 version for the Falcon and WoR. Money well spent. I can now do the one thing I was never able to: Fly the Blackjack around the WoR. :)

One minor comment is none of the screen shots in Android Market have the mini-map on them. You might include a shot or two with the mini-map so people know it's there.

Will be purchasing the 99 cent version. Would gladly play 5 bucks for the same thing for all the final fantasies World Maps/Airships. OF course, by all the final fantasies, I mean anything prior to VII.

Thanks Mullet! And yeah I agree I need to update the marketing materials. I have some newer videos I need to edit and I need to take new screenshots. Can anyone think of features they'd like to see? I was thinking of adding esper Terra as an option in place of an airship..

I was looking at some airship gameplay of FFIV and noticed the mode 7 seems less extreme. Trying to think if I could include it in the same engine (I think so). FFIV was the first RPG I ever played but for some reason I only really want back to FFVI so my memory of IV is a bit hazy.

I made a java tool to rip any world map and create the texture atlas plus map info. So I might test it out on a FFIV map in a few days or so.

Airship going for vector. Magitek heading for Narshe. :)
