I vaguely remember it being an actual concerted effort to break the record and I was asleep.
The bots loved us more back then. Now most of them are ignoring us like the emotionless, metal bastards they are.

It was indeed the bots, but not the spambots that have been mentioned. Yahoo! Slurp Spiders infested our forums in a big way. And I mean big! Couldn't move a foot without standing on them.
