That is both horrifying and incredibly fascinating. I've heard of flesh rotting due to a bad bacterial infection, but not within the brain.

Meth does the same thing, although not as quickly or as severe. I had a friend who died as a result of heroin usage when I was younger. He had actually been sober for nearly two years, but he accidentally walked into a door and his brain literally just stopped working.
