I'm just about at my wit's end with my current living arrangement - the guy leaves the place a mess all the time, doesn't clean up after himself, I have to pressure him to get rent/bill money, doesn't ask before using stuff I own or ask if I mind that his girlfriend is moving in with us (again). If I could afford to move out I'd leave in a heartbeat right now.
Has anyone else had bad house sharing experiences? Share them here!
I hate them. I did it once, and never again. Towards the end, I wanted to seriously stab someone in the eye with a straw. It's just not worth it.
I guess I got really fortunate as the people I lived with before were all nice and friendly, largely kept themselves to themselves - helped out with everything and were generally polite/courteous and - above all - fun to be around.Quote:

I had partier roommates. Sometimes they had nights off during the week, so we would have parties during the week. Two times a week was a minimum. If I didn't stay the night at home, I'd come home and find people (couples) in my bed.

I live with a girl who last year bullied me relentlessly and is an absolute bitch. Is unclean, is rude and passive aggressive to boot.
One day I snapped and told her what I think of her, and that she should go smurf herself. The look on her face was priceless and now she leaves me alone.
Despite us not interacting with each other, it would be nice to not have to share a roof with that fanny, but eh, finances do not allow. I'm moving out in 9 months though!!
Guy rented room.
Was on welfare.
Guy kept to his room.
Guy became less and less of a presence in the house.
Stuff goes missing including 300.00 watch, bottle of vodka, various food items and ALL of my ps3 games.
Guy leaves huuuuge trouts in the toilet and doesn't flush.
Last straw
We leave a note on the door: Will - tell us when you wanna come pick up your trout.
Changed locks.
His mom calls 'I can't keep him at my house'
WTF mom, can't have your son sleep on the couch a while?! Sketchy.
Mom says they'll pick up his stuff on a tuesday.
We get wasted then decide to go through his room... combined value of dude's belongings? -$15.00

found trunk full of cheap porn including mags like '40 and smurfed' and a dvd that was a picture with a cell phone number on it....wtf
desk drawer full of cigarette butts collected from the ground.
random stains from bongwater in carpet.

Tuesday comes and it's raining, mom asks if they can move his stuff another day.
me: come get it or it's going to the dump.

Lived with a dude who charged me crap tons for a room and a bathroom. Told me my bathroom was the communal bathroom and refused to let anyone use his bathroom. Refused to let me move out initially. His gf basically lived there and used stuff from my bathroom and her friends used my room for god knows what. One of his friends got wasted and was grabby and he told me to be quiet about it. Thats when i moved out. While he was at a gym. And left a note saying i'm in lack of money purgatory.
FUN!
Most of the housemates are pretty cool, and then there's a young couple couple living in the basement. They're messy, and sometimes when I'm eating, I could hear them shouting and stuff. Usual couples type of crap. I just leave them be since the basement is considered off limit to me. :p The others, I can get along with fine. In fact, I get along with each of them quite well. No big problems to be had.
I hate my housemates, they're absolutely revolting. That and they wake me up early every single morning and I don't appreciate early wake-ups. They're inconsiderate, selfish and arrogant. I generally keep myself to myself now. I live in a house of 7, though, and some are okay and I'm indifferent to them, but it's just the mess I can't stand; the kitchen is a biohazard. What's most annoying is I'm one of the only ones in the house with a job aswell as doing a degree, so tonight for example, I've just finished an 8 hour shift whilst they've all sat around, not doing the kitchen. That really grates.
smurfing housemates, how do they work?
my roommate in the US just had his clothes smurfing everywhere but he was a great guy so it all balanced out
The only people I've lived with, aside from family, have been awesome. I sort of feel bad whenever I hear flatmate horror stories because I don't have a bad word to say about the experience. xD
I'm always smurfing my housemate.
My previous roommate was a piece of trout who ended up disappearing after owing me, the landlord and the energy company a bunch of money.
Right now I live in a very comfortable arrangement. Living in a great apartment, getting along with all my flatmates. We cook and have dinner together most days of the week and we go out on trips together. Don't think I could've asked for a better deal (well except for also smurfing the girls living here. That would be the ultimate package).
I've had one room mate situation with a guy where I didn't want to kill him for his poor living habits and we still ended up having drama.
I lived by myself for a year between room mates and I still look at it very fondly despite all the depression and insanity I dealt with otherwise.
I now live with my girlfriend who is a fantastic room mate because we actually have the same standards of cleanliness. It's nice to live with someone I actually click with.
I don't think I'd ever live with a guy again ever though. I'm not sure I'd even want my children to be males after my experiences.
It's so weird to me how many people complain about dirtiness when it comes to roommates. I've had so many friends rant to me about dishes staying in the sink for days, mold growing on trout, etc. Like, I'm a fairly messy person, but I'm not DIRTY. And when I lived with roommates, I tried my best to keep my trout in order. You know, rather than flinging my dirty clothes on the ground, I would pick up after myself, keep things tidy, even though that's really not my natural inclination. Because when you're living with people, you have to be more considerate, not less.
Are people really that dirty? And if so, aren't they at least a tiny bit self-aware enough to not act that way in front of other people? If you live by yourself, by all means, allow ants to come swallow up old pizza left to die on the kitchen table, but when you live with other people? Doesn't somes sort of embarrassment kick in?
Had a conversation about this with a friend before.
Friend: Dude, why don't you just move in with me?
Me: Nah, I'd rather stay friends.
A lot of people come from households where either A) their parents took care of everything for them or B) their parents didn't give a trout and were filthy. Either way you end up with kids who don't clean for crap once they're out on their own.Quote:

I'm extremely messy and leave stuff everywhere and have food wrappings of various stuff all over my desk etc. But I never ever let trout lie around long enough for it to start smelling bad. Either my stuff is dry and therefore doesn't mould/rot/whatever, or I dispose of it before things go bad.
I seriously can not understand how people can live with the smell of old spoiled food.
I do clean things up before people come to visit me, though. I care too much about what other people think of me to let things just lie around.

We also had Lucio who was in his later years, why he decided to move in to a shared house with 4 20-somethings I don't know however he repeatedly pissed us off by complaining that he wasn't receiving enough signal in his room on the internet to the point that I informed him since it's in my name and not the land-lord's it's an amenity not a right in the house and I would gladly cover his share of the internet myself and denied him access. He complained to the landlord about that for about a month and a half whilst I outright said to the landlord that until he'd learnt his lesson I would accept no money from him and no service would be received. Lucio then tried to demand I pay him his lost income I told him to in no uncertain terms get on his knees and make like a circus seal. Lucio repeatedly even after I finally relented and allowed him internet access again complained and eventually I caught him smoking in his room (against the tennancy agreement and house rules) twice. I at that point apparently intimidated him enough that he left the house moving out without giving the landlord notice so lost his deposit too.
When I was younger and dating my ex, Ewa we lived in a house in East London for 6 months, the house was split with a fair few people there was us two, Aga (who worked with Ewa and was arguably the hotter of the two and tried numerous times to steal me on grounds of I was going out with Ewa), Monica and Monika (Monika was the hotter one of these two, liked to go around in a silk kimono dressing gown which didn't cover her nudity much) and the last room was Raphael and Innes (the only other guy in the house who was a dumb smurfer and his obese walrus of a girlfriend who looked like a Gommorrean slaver). Innes and Raphael did not get along with us, Monica and Monika basically flip-flopped between people more often than Mitt Romney did in the electoral race and Aga and Ewa loved to hate one another because Ewa believed Aga wanted everything she had on mere grounds of she had it (tbf she wasn't exactly wrong going on the few plays Aga made for me, paper thin walls and "accidentally" walking naked to the bathroom without a towel on when I'm about to leave/enter the room? yeah...) After Aga went home to Poland (which for me was a shame, I actually got along with Aga, wonder why lol) Monika moved in to her boyfriends place and we were left dealing with people we hated and who hated Ewa. I had a fight on Christmas day with one of them (Raphael) and on the 3rd of Jan we had moved having found a place literally days before Christmas. I spiked every last bit of food in that place and the kettle and the pans with laxatives, I also put itching powder on all the clean laundry in the house and on the sofa's and other soft furnishings around. I got revenge on those smurfers good apparently they were sick and itching for weeks (Ewa's boss was the landlord of the property)
I've lived with a lot of different people, and most of them were :bou::bou::bou::bou:s.
I find it really bizarre as well. I was brought up where I was rewarded with praise if I did some cleaning up without being asked, and used to see it as a way of 'doing something nice'. So I brought that with me to student living; I'll just clean the living room, or the bathroom, but not for myself, but so it's clean for my friend, just as a nice gesture. I'm considering finding the sluttiest bra/kinky outfit possible and just keeping it on hand so when his next belladonna comes into the kicthen for breakfast I can hold it up and be like "oh is this yours? The last person here left it here."
Not sure if that's being *too* bitchy or not though.
On the whole, the housemates I lived with at university were okay, but sometime they were bloody lazy. I don't think the house ever got dirty dirty, but it was certainly often untidy. One of the biggest problems was people not cleaning up after themselves, and particularly washing their dishes after cooking. In a house with a dishwasher of all things. I wouldn't mind if they didn't wash up if they'd used the dishwasher instead.

the biggest problem I have with my current housemates aside from their bitching about me is that when I was off work sick I cleaned almost daily in the house, I'd hoover and mop and wipe down all the sides. I did it because I would be dating someone and have them over in part but also because I like living in a clean house, the house was cleaner than after our cleaning lady comes in once a fortnight because I did everything, bleach mopped the floors the works. Now I'm back in work again I don't have time to do this every couple of days. Yet my housemates who have far more time off than me don't do it either resulting in a place that no matter how muddy it is outside gets mopped like once a fortnight unless I decide I can't stand it and find time to do so on one of my days off or before/after work. This means I can literally be mopping the house and sweeping at 1am because I can't do it when they're sitting on their fat arses in the lounge. But they will sit there and watch me clean rather than get up and be like "can I do anything to help?"
My housemates were like that too, Steve. Except, when I didn't do it for a while (because smurf those guys), one of them would huffily do the cleaner and then have the audacity to suggest I never cleaned. xD
Good God.
All my housemates ever seem to do now is make vague and pointed tweets/status updates at each other.
It's smurfing embarrassing. :mad:
I'd love to just knock their heads together, make them either sit and talk about stuff or drop it, rather than be passive aggressive.

Oh the classic one with Vanessa atm is to leave passive aggressive notes about doing dishes and not leaving them on the side to sit and how unfair it is on everyone to have to clean the dishes to cook something because someone didn't do theirs. I regularly do not only my own dishes but all the dishes left on the side in the kitchen, I never get any thanks for doing so and yet when I leave like 1 pan, 1 baking tray, 1 sharp knife and 2 bowls from where I've cooked chicken, rice and veg they gripe... some people seriously need to get over themselves, especially since she decided that despite doing no cleaning herself it's the boys job to clear the rubbish bin and take the recycling out. for some people it's a measure of being trapped unable to find somewhere else or unwilling to find somewhere else. I know with myself and my ex it took me working 2 jobs to get us both out of east london and that house we lived in. Currently I did really get along with my housemates until recently, I figure it is just whereas before we had other people living with us who would fit in between the differences between us making it work well now we don't and the guys who've moved in to the house in some ways exacerbate the issues.Quote:

I've always gotten along with my guy roomies. I've gotten along with a couple of my girl roomies; most of them, not. Guys tend to be much more easygoing and much less passive aggressive, in my experience. Like the chick I lived with in undergrad who cooked every single lunch and dinner and used tons of pots and pans. Then one day she made her boyfriend call me as I was driving home from college for the break to tell me that she she was upset that she was doing dishes more often than I was. He sounded supremely uncomfortable, haha. Considering that I was in my TV dinners and oreos phase, the only dishes I ever used was a cup occasionally, so I would hope that she was washing them more often than me. (I honestly don't think she realized that she was the only one creating dishes. We lived in a house of 4 people and none of them cooked except for her. And really, she didn't do dishes - she made her boyfriend do them when her pots and pans piled up too high to use the sink) And why not tell me herself, while I was still in the house? :p The whole year was full of passive aggressive fun like that.
