Gaming Language/Sociolect

I'm writing a piece on RPG's and wondered if you guys could throw me a few words and phrases that are part of the gaming sociolect, typically RPG gaming.

So far I have "questing" and "level-grinding"

Stuff from WoW would be good, I don't play it you see so I have no idea, stuff like "level up".


Ooooh! I just thought of another.... "Raid"!

And, if you can't think of any, answer this! How do you think that words and phrases we use when gaming affects the gaming experience? Is it nice to have a your own specific "language" when gaming? What words and phrases from gaming do you use in everyday life?

You can just say grinding instead of level-grinding, btw.

AC, AoE, Build, Cooldown, Farming, LFG, PvP, WTB/WTS

General MMO Terms. I have a wide variety of other RPG Terms if you want them too.

WTT/WTB/WTS (want to trade/want to buy/want to sell)

PST (please send tell)

LFG (Looking for Group)

Instances (Dungeons)

Pretty much all the Instances in WoW get abbreviated too like DM (Deadmines) Stocks (Stockade) Gnomer (Gnomeregan) DS (Dragon Soul) WC (Wailing Caverns)

In general RPG terms the stats are always good places to start and then things like Party, Turn Based, ATB etc - and that people also talk about things in terms of skill levels (i.e. 525 tailoring, or maxed materia etc)

Then there's also the calling things "epic" which largely stemmed from WoW and spread into pop culture with things like Epic Fail and things that have almost obtained cult status like Leeroy Jenkins.

On the US servers you're correct.

On EU it's never been referred to as VC and always as DM. Dire Maul was often only referred to as Tribute Run, DM East etc

We never called Deadmines VC on Horde side...it was always DM. Dire Maul was just "LFM dreadsteed".

10-11 is average, and 18 is the highest attribute score that a character can start with (without racial modifiers). And every race that grants bonus to charisma also has a level adjustment. :colbert:

I think abbreviations for specific raids/instances/whatevers is too game specific for this kind of thing, Lockharted. Just saying.

Anyway, I don't really care about the words I use because of a connection between gamers or anything. It's just a more efficient way to communicate with people who know the terms.

I use "noob", "pro" and "imba" in the life of reals, but that's about it.
