...Rinoa was hot?
(SPOILER)Okay, some of the music was pretty good, and as much as I despise it, at least it was ballsy enough to try new things. :p
The Ragnarok was badass. >_____>
EDIT: Oh, and I liked how Odin/Gilgamesh was implemented.
The music. FH is so calm and relaxing and so fitting towards the mood of the peaceful city and then there's songs like The Extreme which is a awesome final boss theme and really underated.
Seifer's character and his relationship with Squall. Well, for the most part anyway - it all does kinda fall apart at the end but it still worked for a majority of the game.
Rinoa and Selphie were both very bangable.
The ending is actually quite touching and I do tend to tear up during the part with Laguna and Raine.
Several moments in the storyline were genuinely heartwarming. The ending, as mentioned, the scene with Squall and Rinoa on the Ragnarok, a good chunk of their scenes on disc 3, actually. I think VIII is tied with X as the most emotional in the series, though VIII seems to be on the happier side while X is more bittersweet.
Laguna is an awesome character, plain and simple.
Triple Triad is one of the best FF minigames ever, right up there with blitzball and Chocobo Hot and Cold.
The summon designs are probably the most badass in the series.
The FMVs are GORGEOUS even today, the intro and the waltz scene in particular.
Those humorous moments that I could have never seen coming. The ones that weren't suppose to be taken so seriously.
Laguna was a good character and the soundtrack was interesting and unlike anything in the series.
The setting had potential, and I actually really liked some of the character designs. Squall is one of Nomura's best designs, and with a few exceptions, the entire look of the game overall was very unique for the series.
The music. The battle themes are among the best in the series.
Music, graphics, world design, pacing, combat, junctioning, triple triad, the story until disc 4.
Laguna, Selphie, the music, and the graphics.
You forgot to list Triple Triad, bro.
I will only admit that Triple Triad worked in the fact that I kept me addicted. I detest that game. But... its so addicting T0T
The spaaaaaaace scene. And the Ragnarok is awesome.
For me, you get pulled into the game pretty quickly. The entire 1st disc I liked but hated disc 2. It picks back up again for me on the 3rd disc (which is my favorite) and disc 4 isn't too shabby, either.
I mastered the trout out of the junctioning system and was able to manipulate battles pretty well because of it. It's my favorite FF battle/magic system.
It has some awesome cities. I loooove Dollet, Fisherman's Horizon, Deling City and Esthar.
Triple Triad is pretty fun, but can be annoying as trout.
Yeah, it gets really annoying in areas with the random rule, and even more so if you accidentally let that rule spread.
I really like the junction system too, although it could have used a bit of balancing. Now don't get me wrong, I love figuring out systems and taking advantage of everything I can, I just feel it should have been a bit harder to do so than it currently is.
The random rule is abhorrent.
It took me a long time to understand junctioning. I feel like it's the same as any game, though - once you get to know the feel for it, it becomes a little too easy.
I'm cool with that, though. Instant kill with hitting those goddamn T-Rexaurs is extremely satisfactory.
Oh yeah, I had forgotten entirely about 100% chance to petrify/death stuff with the right magics junctioned. That was pretty neato for random encounters.
My favorite thing to do when playing 8 is when Squall's limit break comes up. When he rushes forward and it's time to start hitting R1, I scream "REN ZO KU KEN!!"
...Yeah.
Eyes on Me.
I'm listening to the song after a couple of years of not hearing it and it is a really beautiful song. The lyrics could of been translated better; but it still a rather touching and emotional song.
IMO is one of the best FF vocal songs.
Many of the locations. The Gardens. Many sound effects. The FMVs. Obviously the music. And yes, triple triad.
I like Laguna and his story, I really wished there were a few more dream sequences that set up Reine or Laguna's life in the military, or even at Timber Maniacs.
I do like the locations designs, despite the game never giving much incentive to explore, I do love the art of the cities.

The one exception is Esthar which looks like something out of the Jetsons or some old Astro Boy cartoon. It's like a cartoonish looking future city and it really doesn't gel very well with the rest of the games art design.
I love that Tonberry and Gilgamesh became summons.
I like the Gunblade and how it works in the game, it was a nice touch.
I really love Edea, she had a much greater stage presence than the other witches and I feel this is why so many people were disappointed with Ultimecia cause despite acting through her... well image is everything.
I really love the whole SeeD test and how different things you do can affect your rank in the beginning.
I also love Triple Triad, its still my favorite Mini-Game in the series.
I forgot to mention Edea! She's a badass <3
I actually like doing more in combat than telling my character to hit the creature in the face with their weapon? Getting the timing down was fun, especially with Seifer's Hyperion cause that weapon has a funky rhythm compared to Squall's Revolver. Even though the concept of a Gunblade seems silly, I felt the game did a good job of making it a practical weapon without resorting to the obvious "oh it shoots bullets and hit things hur hur".
Latin Lyrics. They get my attention. :p
I agree, definitely in the top tier. While I found VIII's soundtrack to be hit and miss with the songs, in particular it's world map theme can just go away, the airship theme was just brilliant. The Man With The Machine Gun was good, and the Extreme was also a surprise hit with me.
It still forced me to pay attention in combat which I respect and I actually did like how VIII worked out the concept of a Gunblade. The initial concept out of context sounds silly, but I really felt the design team did a good job of making it an interesting and original weapon. Besides its no sillier than Paint Brushes, gambling cards, Combs, Megaphones and whatever the hell Rinoa's weapon is. :p
What's wrong with the gunblade?
Triple Triad and everything you could do to get and modify cards. I loved that aspect of this game so much.
Actually the grip is not a pistols, it looks like one but ultimately its designed to be more of a sword.

Balance would still be off but its not like the game doesn't mention its a difficult weapon to master. Granted Seifer's version of the weapon is pretty unrealistic...
Attachment 39307
...Yeah, it's still a stupid and nonsensical design. That is an aweful way to grip a weapon that one is meant to swing. The problem is, difficult to master or not, that is capable of doing nothing one could not do with a sword.
Not to mention the silliness of actually loading it with bullets. Mind you, it's less goofy the a smurfing blitzball or fishing rod as a weapon, but dumb none the less.
It's a weapon that reaks of trying to hard to be cool.
But hey, I can at least appreciate the way it's limit break works, even if I don't really care for it myself. :P

I'm telling you guys, Seifer is the man. He undergoes arguably more character development (well, regression but it's still changing) than any of the main party.
He has the most interesting motivation and personality.
His design is the best.
This game would have worked better if it was just Seifer, Fujin and Raijin.
I could argue with you about everything else you said, but I will concede that the game might have worked better with just Seifer, Fujin and Raijin. But I think that's maybe just because the other characters were so bad.
Yeah, I think that if at the time you beat Ultimecia at the time you defeat Adel and then went on to fight Seifer (perhaps not Fujin and Raijin at the end, though, as I like how they weren't inherintly evil but more so were just faithful to their friend) it would have been great. It would be like Lord of the Rings book spoilersSauron & Saruman - just because Sauron is gone doesn't mean his corruption on Saruman is gone. It would be great if they did that with Seifer - have him corrupted by the sorceresses but perhaps unlike Saruman, have him become a global threat as the new leader of Galbadia (equivalent of Mordor). Perhaps near the end Fujin and Raijin could abandon him because he has become too evil even for his closest friends, just to add to a bit of story. Finally, upon being defeated, perhaps there would be a way to remove the corruption from him and have him actually live on beyond the final boss battle. That would certainly play things out differently to most Final Fantasys and would have made for a much better and more personal fight than that experienced between the party and Ultimecia.
what I like about this game
1- IMO is the FF that is most close to the reality. Of course you have magic and GFs but, the rest is pretty convincent.
2- monsters level up along with you. The game will be not too hard and not too easy. This is good and bad, but mostly good. (good because of the fun and bad because you get to lvl 100 way too easily)
3- I find the GF system great. You can put magic and boost your character the way you like, instead of having a pre estabilished status like in the other games.
4- amazing OST
The only thing I HATE about this game is that the magic is counted and you have to draw/produce it instead of learning it. For example, if I have 100 Full life and I put it in my HP status I can't use the magic that much, otherwise my HP will decrease.
