Well, there's only ever been two forced black mages in the party pre-X: Rydia and Vivi (well, and Palom, but he's temporary unless you play IV Advance or Complete Collection). I wouldn't say either of them are useless. Vivi has very strong spells that are much more useful than, say, the Eidolons in the game. Same for Rydia, though she did have summons to back up her black magic arsenal. You could argue that in the end game, other characters like Zidane and Steiner are better since they can do more damage with less MP cost than Vivi with his strongest spells, but that's more a flaw that's been hunting magic throughout the entire series than a flaw of Vivi.
Love Vivi! He's cute, adorable and for most of the game is fairly mysterious. :)
He's a rather iconic character. His personality is comical.
I like the character concept of Vivi a lot. I would have liked it if they delved more into his origins, but I think that his own ignorance to his history is crucial to the character arc.
He is my favourite character in FFIX.
Vivi is the most adorable Black Mage ever! His personality is unlikely for a typical black mage, but that is why he's so cute and relatable.
Oh, did I forgot to mention that he won a Ciddie for Best Character last year? Way to go Vivi, we love you! :D
