Dethy Mafia!

Introduction
Welcome to the inaugral Dethy Mafia game! If you want to know what it is, it is a very quick and easy game of mafia that will last no more than two days, so if you all sign up tonight it could be over before the weekend is!

Set up

• 1 Mafia Goon
• 1 Paranoid Cop
• 1 Insane Cop
• 1 Naive Cop
• 1 Regular Cop

We will start with a Night 0 investigation.

I hope you're not all mafia'd out! This will be quick and fun, I swear! No crazy roles, no mindsmurfs, just logic and common sense. Perfect to hone your skills and have some fun. :greenie:

Flavour
Everyone hated Gold. That smug bastard. Swanning around the town, thinking he's so fancy because he looks like a precious metal. Disliking someone is one thing... murdering him is quite another. The town woke up to find he had been melted down, and his remains used to write the titles in this thread. :(

The rest of the colours must work together to find out who killed Gold! CAN THEY DO IT...? Luckily there are several Police Academy attendees in town. Unfortunately, most of them flunked out.

Um... I guess.

This is rather sudden. Why is it called dethy?

Are you signing up Formalhaut? All the other competitors are anonymous but if you want to forego it you can. I need just one more sign up and then we will start RIGHT AWAY! The accounts are all set up (yes I am using accounts for mini mafia!) and ready to go as soon as we have one more person.

Ugh, I have to use the inferior Firefox while I'm playing this, as I'm doing the next community update on Chrome.

Anyway, I've never played Cop before, so I've no idea what the protocol is. I'll go ahead and announce my result.

I investigated myself, and I got Innocent. Make of that what you will.

Remember that we don't know our sanity yet, but from the results so far Red must be the paranoid cop.

I'd like to know what Green and Red investigated. There HAS to be one guilty result. Unless our paranoid cop didn't bother doing an investigation.

Bear in mind there's a Mafia goon, who is going to lie.

I know this because all 4 of us have innocent as our reading, so none of us can be paranoid.

Well we already have confirmed Red's identity, so it's very likely he'll be the first nightkill, meaning we can either choose to go ahead with the night or do a lynch, since Red can't offer much insight.

At least in regard to investigation.

My bad, must be going blind. Red isn't doing much, and hasn't shown up. Yeah, we could just go with red.

Also I can already prove that I'm also one of the cops.

There must be an insane cop amoung us. Since there are only innocent results so far, the insane cop must have investigated the goon. Because nobody investigated me, therefore I am not the goon.

Lets get to work folks, we have to find Gold's killer. I loved Gold... He was such a great guy. Always bringing us Skittles!

As far as I'm concerned, I've had the most investigations, both being innocent. So I most likely got the naive,the sane cop, or the goon investigating me, so who's who? Do you wanna work out who we'll investigate the next night?

I swear, I feel like an absolute Rookie compared with you guys.

Well, I can always go ahead and investigate Green. I've got that I'm innocent, obviously, so I'm either naive or sane.

We can go two paths. Everyone can investigate myself or Red to verify sanity as we are already confirmed town. Or we can all investigate Blue, Yellow or Purple and go from there.

And I can go ahead and investigate Blue.

No, I like the "let's all investigate Red or Green" idea a whole lot, as it all but confirms everyone's roles.

I'd like to investigate green, but it doesn't show me much. If green's innocent, I'm still either sane or naive. If green flips guilty, then I don't know what's going to happen.

I might investigate either Yellow or Purple. Probably leaning towards Purple.

I like the odds for lynching, as we already have a 1 out of 3 shot to get the goon already. Wanna try it?

Now lets look at the possible combinations of roles that myself, Yellow and purple can have.

If yellow is the goon.
Possibility 1) Purple is insane, Green is naive, Blue is normal
Possibility 2) Purple is naive, Green is insane, Blue is normal

If yellow is not the goon
Purple is either normal, mafia, or naive. Green is either normal or naive. Blue can be any role but paranoid.

It's a gamble, that "might" pay off. Who do you want to hit?

The only thing is we don't want to lynch the sane cop.

Gosh, I really don't like suggesting death while we're all so civil to each other. :lol: Blue or purple is my vote, obviously.

Well, I'm the inexperienced one. I can't tell you guys one way or another. I'd like to have another night to get another investigation in. That is, if I'm not offed by the goon.

Well, Red had to have confirmed his/her existence to Psychotic, so unless he/she had to quickly leave the house, maybe Red is still reading the thread, and just abstaining from posting until getting some investigations under the belt.

Well the player who is the goon made a big mistake with his fake investigation. Everyone should investigate blue tonight.

Yep, Red is alive and kicking. Somewhere. I do think it'd be funny if the entire game happened without him/her.

No offense blue, I flipped a coin to pick you for investigation, purple was the other one. Having everyone investigate you would be the most informative for the town. You should investigate yellow as you already investiated yourself.

If everyone decides to investigate purple instead then yellow should investigate myself or red.

Here's why:

I can't be insane (as I would be guilty in an investigation).
I can't be paranoid (I got an innocent result).
I can't be naive (I got a guilty result).

That means I MUST be sane.

I investigated Yellow, who got a guilty result. Unless I'm being a stupid rookie and missed something, which, lets be honest is entirely possible, that means Yellow is guilty as I am Sane.

Easy enough. He investigated Yellow, got innocent, therefore Yellow is guilty.

This was mildly entertaining. I think if we try it again we should force there to be a lynch each day and also not reveal the role upon death. That gives the mafia at least a fighting chance.

I think so.

This was my first mafia and I really enjoyed it! Even if I didn't have the bloody foggiest about what was going on, I rolled with it and survived, so... happy days!

You did great Locky. Deathy is unique because it's a logic puzzle.

The good news is, big proper mafia is even more crazy!

I just focused on my own sanity. I didn't get much of the other stuff either. I just focused on my own sanity. And then just went from there.

I might do another Dethy or I might do a Nomination. I'd do Dethy with forced lynches and no nightkill reveals as Del suggests. It won't be tonight though! Maybe tomorrow or next week. If people let me know what they'd like I can cater to demand! Maybe there is no demand at all, who knows.

Seriously though, I thoroughly enjoyed this. While I wouldn't join in with the big mafia, this was really fun - and as it's so quick it doesn't require a great deal of investment!

I might get involved in a Dethy if you run another one.

I wouldn't mind taking part again next week. I've got a busy schedule enough as it is without playing mafia every week :p

Here is how it works.In Deathy, there is one regular cop (investigation is correct), one insane cop (investigation gives opposite result), one naive cop (investigation is always innocent), one paranoid cop (investigation is always guilty) and one goon (when investigated he is guilty)

Since Nobody claimed a guilty result, the only person left to claim was the only possible way for someone to be paranoid, and that was red.

The cases were the only possible setups that would allow for the results given. As you can see, it was possibility 2 for the yellow goon scenario.

I guess the good thing about Dethy Mafia is that it gives you practise for both in-game mafia play, and allows others to host who perhaps have never hosted before.

I'm definitely interested in these at some point. I like the concentration on logic over emotion/frenemyships/etc. It looks like you have even more than the five you need, but I'm definitely interested any time in the future there's an opening. PM me!

Any of the others too. The nomination version in particular sounds absolutely wicked in its simplicity.

I'm game once there's a game with an opening. Quick, fun and awesome.

I think these short sharp bursts of mafia over an evening are a lot of fun. Don't get me wrong, big ol' week long mafia is fun too, but it becomes a real bloody commitment after a while!

Ahh! I wish I knew more about Mafia to be able to host one of these! I'd love to host a Mini-Mafia!

I think I'd like to host a mini-mafia at some point this year. It seems like a big job, even for a mini-game. You've got to organise accounts, send PM information, keep the thread up to date... blah blah blah. That's commitment enough for a evening, let alone for a week (or more) game of Mafia.

I guess it would be nice to co-host a game, and share the responsibility.

I don't think I can play today, sadly. :( Unfortunately, there's a bit of stuff that needs my attention at work, and I probably won't be able to play til 1p CST.

Disney Deathy is now full. the game will be later today at roughly 5:30 Eastern Daylight Time

Those are the easy parts, Formalhaut! The hardest part is coming up with a set up! Here's some pointers.

General

• Less is more! If you have too many power roles (and, of course, you'd put them on both sides to balance it out) then you're leaving the game wide open for gross inbalance if a couple of one side's power roles die early. You always have this risk, of course, but the more power roles they have, the wider that gap becomes.
• Consider also back up roles! Cop, Doctor... hell, given their unfortunate track record in EoFF mafia (I can think of at least four that died before Day 2 was out from the top of my head) maybe a back up Serial Killer!
• Not every role in the mafia flash is worth using at all. Naive Doctor, for example. Doctors have no reason whatsoever to claim unless it's the endgame - it's not like a Naive Cop, when the Cop should and must claim.

Mafia

• A mafia goon is a power role! It absolutely is! There's been a bit of a shift lately towards packing mafias to the brim with Prostitutes, Framers and whatnot. Let's take a game of 18 players. If there were 3 Mafia, I'd expect all three to have a hax role. If there were 4, I'd expect two goons, two extra powers. If there were 5, one power, four goons. This is a rough estimation of course and all other roles should be factored in too, but you get the idea.
• The absolute best way to balance things for the Mafia is to use the town. Beloved Princess is a great role to help the Mafia, as is a Miller (see below!) or a Bomb. You could also make a Mafia Bomb. They don't have any special night ability, but if it goes poorly for the Mafia they can even the score.

The Cop

• The town strategy relies heavily on the Cop, and the Mafia live in fear of the Cop. At some point, the Cop MUST claim - even if they find no guilty results, on Day 3 or 4 it is best to tell the town what they know before they end up being night killed and nobody knows. The Doctor-Cop axis is unbreakable... so how to nerf it? Most drama comes from disputed cop claims. Come up with one or maybe two ways of making it not so cut-and-dry
• Millers and Framers work well. The weirdo Cops are all interesting in the early game, but do fall away later.
• The Jailkeeper is a lovely little role because it forces a choice. Do I protect the Cop, at the risk of losing his result...?
• Alternatively, load the Town up with a couple of other investigative roles that require more thought. Watcher, Gunsmith and Tracker all require different lines of thought - "why did this person do this/why do they have a gun?" rather than "Am I sane?"

Craziness

• Mindsmurfery is always fun for a host, but there's pros and cons. It can add life and excitement to a dull game, but remember it increases reliance on luck as opposed to skill, and can dramatically unbalance your set up!
• Serial Killer and Vigilante are both randomisers. Yep. Vig is not a particularly good town role, unless it's a competent one-shot vig, which it rarely is.
• Bus Driver is a hugely dick role to put in, but fun for chaos. Use with caution.
• Inconsistencies between nights are good for confusion, so consider one-shot abilities. Jack-of-all-Trades, one-shot Vig, etc.
• Never lie to your players. Death Miller and someone having more than one account are examples of this!
• Having people change alignments (eg recruiting mafia/cult) is also a dick move. It does add chaos which is good, but don't use lightly.

Pfft. I'd definitely co-host. Maybe be a part of the in-game runnings of the game thread, like time left, vote tallies (I have quite a reputation for them apparently).

I'd like to help assist a set-up of roles, but given my inexperience, I'd need an experienced host guiding me around the park. :p

I think the problem with having pre-sign ups is that you need everyone on at the same time. You may also want to make a new thread actually q-ball as I think this'll get tangled up quickly.

You'll also want to make sure that people from different time zones get to host, because evening time in Britain would be peak work time in America, so people might not be able to sign-up. :)

Currently watching the Holiday Special version of Mafia.

Going well so far, though it's quite funny how the lone Mafia Goon got killed off first!

I had just been waiting and jumped in. Super excited to play and everything. I figured 'No sense in not voting right away' since it is suppose to be a "quick" game ;_;

I know, that was so harsh on poor ed. He was the first to sign up and had to wait ages and then that happened. I was gutted, much less him.

So, what did we all think of the set up? Particularly compared to Dethy?

Dethy at least gives you something to go on with Day 1, whereas on this people were just pulling random stuff out their ass and wasted poor Halloween for no real reason xD However, as the game went on people were more about suspicious behaviour which was good - Dethy focuses on more of a logic puzzle than reasoned arguments.

I loved this, it was so tense and awesome. I only wish Jen's computer had been working so we could have seen more of Easter.

Wow, didn't expect the day to end so quickly. Nicely played once again Chionos! Winner of XXV Mafia, winner of this game. Crikey.

THE SHAME

I liked it just fine. I have not played Dethy but I would like to.

I don't know how Dethy is even a game really. Is there any way for the Mafia to actually win? It would take either a bunch of terrible logic, or some poor investigation choices to give the mafia a chance at all.

Disney Dethy is of course still going on athough I'm not quite sure what's happening in that.

Maybe we can do an IRC mafia sometime. That'd be crazy.
