Cue montage of bigging up how this is going to change everything again - you're going to have a relationship with your TV.

An all one in one system to align tv, entertainment and games - to solve a fragmented living room. The XBOX ONE.

It looks like a standard DVD player, all very sharp edges and angular - from the box itself, to the Kinect sensor and even the controller itself.

The new 'Kinect' sensor can apparently connect to all your favourite devices - including your TV itself allowing you to watch TV without having to fiddle around with inputs etc.

They call this feature "Instant Switching" - using voice commands such as XBOX GAME, GO TO TV, GO TO MUSIC you can instantly switch between all those input sources without having to fiddle around with controllers and remotes. Even hand gestures can be used to this.

Another new feature "Snap Mode" allows you to have multiple programs roaming alongside each other. So for example you can boot up internet explorer in a side panel mid game to look up hints etc without having to return to the dashboard. You can even have TV running alongside your game. Pretty nifty.

Skype is also coming to XBOX ONE utilising the Kinect camera - again can be used in Snap Mode - you can even have group video conferences running alonside your game.

More stuff about ESPN's partnership with XBOX allowing you to use snapmode etc and also get in-sport alerts for your fantasy football teams etc. Snapmode also allows on demand watching of highlights and replays etc - this isn't just limited to the ESPN content either.

The XBOX even has a built in TV guide for your local TV. Using voice commands such as WATCH CHANNELNAME you can switch channels or even ask WHATS ON CHANNELNAME and it brings up the TV guide for that channel. Much like Netflix it also has a favourites sytem to keep track of programs you watch frequently which also provides trending recommendations etc.

Now we're about to look under the hood!

XBOX ONE Architecture, 3 Operating Systems in one:
- Windows Kernel
- Existing XBOX Architecture improved

Kinect completely redesigned:
- 1080p Wide View Camera
- Better voice recognition, more chatty commands
- 2gb/s
- Lots of hi-tech sciencey stuff about how fast it's recognition is
- More recognition, more joints, better depth, it can even read your heartbeat

XBOX ONE Controller:
- better ergonomics
- Dynamic impulse triggers
- Precision d-pad
- Built in battery housing

Kinect is the binding power between all of these interfaces. It recognises you, and your controller - for example the controller can be used as a shield. If it sees you boot the XBOX up it automatically loads your profile etc.

XBOX Live:
- Uses the same membership as today
- Powered by 300,000 servers (a huge increase over the current 15,000 servers)
- Uses cloud computer
- Has built in recording and editing software to allow sharing of video content (ala PS4)
- Better matchmaking
- More functionality to allow achievements to be far more reflective of what you're doing
- Way more support to allow for bigger matches and even MMO worlds


EA sports confirms:
- FIFA
- Madden
- NHL
- UFC

New game engine for EA Sports called EA SPORTS IGNITE. Supposedly blurs the line between real and virtual - based on instincts, intellgience and emotion, speed and agility. Cue montage of going on about these principles and then images of the engine rendering this and taking all of into consideration. Very cool image of banners in the crowd rendered in real time.

Engine has 10x more animation details, making inches matter (giggle). The engine has living crowds and sidelines - everything reacts to how you play rather than set animations at set times.

Cue some trailers of gameplay footage from XBOX ONE - it all looks very pretty. The lighting effects are particularly impressive.

Now Phil Spencer from Microsoft Studios is bigging up the relationship with publishers, mentioning XBOX ONE exclusives but not dropping any names... yet. Here comes a look at a "blockbuster franchise"...

Forza Motorsport 5. Confirmed as a launch title.

Exclusive from Remedy (Max Payne etc) confirmed. Quantum Break. Interesting trailer, not much shown in the way of gameplay though.

Microsoft Studios plans to launch 15 games in the first year of XBOX ONE. 8 of which are brand new franchises.

Call of Duty Ghosts, made on a whole new engine for the next-gen.

Your squad contains a Dog! Storyline set in an America in disarray. The squad is made up of underdogs, remnants of all of America's disbanded Special Forces.

You can slide, lean out of corners and even automatically vault over terrain as you run toward it.

Multiplayer revamps - dynamic maps contain events such as earthquakes, storms etc or player triggered events that can cause explosions, bridges to collapse, buildings to fall down etc.

Impressive side by side comparison with CoD:MW3 and CoD: Ghosts.

XBOX REVEAL: Bonus Talk & Aftermath

Today I'm looking at the future of technology. In Gaming, one such pieces of tech is about to reveal itself from the shroud of miasma known as time, Microsoft will shed light & crystal clarity on the new Xbox soon. Its reportedly had been given many names including the most recent being 'Xbox 8" and then later 'Xbox Infinity' as you already may know. Although at the end of the day the name isn't as important as the Console's hardware and even more importantly Software or Games we are able to play on the new Xbox.

In order to bring you all up to speed I'm posting a few major features, including the main show. Those will be from the big reveal to Major Nelson to major news pieces from sites like CNet, Gamespot, IGN, Joystiq, Kotaku & Xbox's news site called Xbox Wire. I'm at work, so hopefully there's some stream somewhere that can be watched on a smartphone. Otherwise I'll be missing it.

I'm very interested in what they're going to show at this event though. Even though I own an Xbox 360 that I never play that's been sitting on my closet shelf for the last two years, I'm still keeping an open mind.

My biggest concern is that it's going to be more of a family entertainment box than a video game console, seeing as they've been trying to turn the 360 into just that. and neglecting their library in the process.

Nothing much there that got me excited. I'll probably take the Wii U and PS4 as my next gen consoles. In that order.

I'm not interested in any of them at this point. Which is good because I can't afford any new consoles right now. xD

Still waiting for the selling point. Saying "we'll get games a few days early" or "we''ll get extra features" is nothing revolutionary for me. Kinect already happened. Fish moving when you get close could be done on current gen. Where is the revolution? Urgh.

Bored, bored, bored. Apparently this is a great TV system, but I already have Sky and a PC, so I'm covered for that.

Dog is inevitably going to get killed off near the end of the game for mass tears amongst the gaming community. If this happens, I will feel justified in continuing to not bother playing Call of Duty.

Forza's not gonna do it for me. I'm more interested in that Witness game. Show me your exclusives, MS. >=(

I think the footage of the dog in the motion capture outfit was my favorite part of the entire thing :love: :squee:

Those graphics are immense and it looks like it has a lot of smurfing power to it. Will wait and see price points and what exclusives the One/PS4 have before making my decision. Don't think there's anything to really separate the two yet.

The most important aspect of this conference seemed to me was that it was all about the TV.

They will have to pay royalties to the Bluray consortium or whatever they're called. Sony is part of that, but not the only company.

Welp, it's been a good run, Xbox. Three generations, not bad! :p

PS4 vs Xbox will come down to which has the better user experience. It'll all come down to which console is cheaper, how much online features cost (if anything - lookin' at you Microsoft) and which has the better exclusives. If the above is true, then the Xbox is already losing in the competition to see what console I will inevitably get.

But, sounds like the reveal was lacklustre. Imagine that.

Although honestly RIP in peace GameStop ever since they decided to stop taking PS2 game tradeins next month :(

Purely speculating here but I can see it working the way PC games have for nearly the past decade except the CD Key will be on the game disc itself and become authenticated to the first account that plays it.

Then judging by what they are hinting at with reselling or trading used games you could use an option to revoke the authentication key and trade it in against a new digital download or sell it on the XBL marketplace and I imagine the publishers will probably get a cut of any resales etc.

If that's how it works then I'd be all for it really. These days I can rarely buy a disc copy of a PC game without having to authenticate the bloody thing through Steam or Origin and I often wish I could gift or trade my used licenses to friends elsewhere in other countries etc so if Microsoft are actually looking at a way of facilitating that with this authentication system (which likely also explains why EA is scrapping it's Online Pass thing as it makes such publisher enforced DRM unncessary) - then that actually excites me.

Anything that means I have to buy two copies of the game so Danielle and I can both log in and enjoy the game on the single console is balls and I'm not interested in any way whatsoever. Steam is rubbish for this in particular. You don't notice it when you're single, but I love console games because Danielle and I can both play them on our seperate accounts or in split-screen multiplayer without issue.

Steam games? No chance.

Steam is great for long distance relationships though ;D

BoB you do realize there's a difference between a split-screen game on a console and a multiplayer network game on the PC, yes? Well, I just finished watching the stream, and it went about as expected.

Two thirds of the show was spent showcasing "Hey, look, you can browse the net while you watch a movie then chat with your friend on Skype while you switch over to the price is right, via voice command! OH YEAH AND...IT PLAYS GAMES TOO!"

There was very little focus on games, and the majority of the time that was spent on games was spent on sports games. The one game that got actual in game showcasing was Call of Duty Ghosts, which isn't even going to be an exclusive. Hell, the biggest franchise ever exclusive to the Xbox brand, Halo, got a tv show talk.

So far I can't say I'm very excited. The fact that I play a lot of used/rented games isn't aided by the fact that they've confirmed you'll have to pay a fee to play used games.

The one thing that peaked my interest the whole show was that little snippet of Quantum Break they showed.

But E3 is just a few weeks away, so maybe they'll show us more actual games then.

Very annoyed, but it was always going to be that way with subscription games. We do have two copies of various games we both couldn't bear to go without, but that's for two different PCs and two different users. If it's two users on the same PC, I'd not expect to buy twice (and wouldn't have to - FFXIV lets you have multiple characters per sub)... but obviously with FFXIV, we both play at the same time, so yeah.

Pike: It's different because I'm talking about single player games, too. When I buy Mass Effect 3 on the Xbox 360, both of us can play it on our own logins. If I were to buy it on Steam, I can play it, but if Danielle wants to play it she has to either buy it on her own login or use my login, and I'm not cool with people using my login because I want my achievements to be my own.

Glad it seems to not be going down the Steam road, though.

Honestly I'm not exactly excited for XBox 3 (Screw their dumb name I've already got an XBox 1 knocking around somewhere) but what I've seen so far certainly puts it above the WiiU and PS4 in desirability. After all they mentioned some games at least.

I haven't seen the actual video because I'll be damned if I give enough of a trout to sit and watch any companies troutty press conference these days, but based on the lists of announced functions and features, I have to say that this sounds like a pretty damn awful console so far.

How much time and money did Microsoft spend on making their machine do things that Smart TV's are already doing, and will continue to do for the foreseeable future? Why do they assume I need my game console to do what, in no particular order, my PC, Smart Phone, and Tablet already do and often do better? And if I was a wealthier man like my parents are I could add Smart TV to that list. Why do I need any of this if the god damn TV of all things already does it? And why should I care about your game console if you seem more concerned with replacing the TV without actually replacing the TV than showing me the actual games I'll be playing? Or features that will actually benefit games? Should I be impressed with a higher resolution Kinect with better sensing and speech recognition abilities? Because the original Kinect didn't make much of an argument in favour of it's own existence when it comes to being used for games, so the prospect of a new one with no explanation as to how this will benefit the games more than the old one is not interesting.

So what about the actual games? Well, all we really know so far is that the hardware is pretty similar to the PS4, right down to building in your own PS Move in the controller, used games are out, online authentication is probably in (though not always online, though how invasive online authentication is seems to be up in the air), and you're making zero effort to improve the ability for indie developers to get onto the platform without publishing deals.

So from what little we know about the actual games, it's sounding to me like a trouttier PS4 that's trying to win people over by being even more of a multimedia box than the last console generation was. You know, stuff like the share button on the PS4 may be a complete pile of trout as far as ideas go, but at least they were trying. I can give them credit for trying something new to enhance gaming even if it was completely stupid and awful. But this definitely seems worse from all of the information I've been seeing.

Here's hoping they get their trout together by E3 because they're going to need it.

I'm going to rename this thread "The PS4 revealed" and I bet everyone will come out of the woodwork to say how amazing it is. By everyone I mostly mean Loony BoB.

He'd be the only one since the PS4 reveal was pretty awful too.

And really the people bitching about "oh they didn't show off any games" - well E3 is just around the corner and they have to keep something up their sleeves for that.

And the getting hung up on the TV thing and that all your seperate devices do what the ONE already does - that's the entire idea behind it, that the ONE can synchronise with all of those devices on the fly so you can easilly access anything whilst using it without having to faff around with remotes, controllers etc - you can do it all directly through Kinect.

Sure this might sound like a colossal waste of time but I thought smart phones were a colossal waste of time time at first and it took me nearly a year to realise the potential they had. This has potential too. It is frivilous for most people but it'll be handy for others.

As for me, I'm just waiting for E3 to see what their games line-up is. That will seal the deal for either of them for me.

Except, again, TV's can pretty much do that with most existing devices anyway. But even ignoring that, I can't think of a single time where I will want to use any of it. Do I really need to instantaneously switch from the TV show I'm watching to an internet browser? Using voice commands no less? No, I don't. I will never use this because I can simply keep watching my show while whipping out the cell phone or tablet if I need to suddenly browse the internet in the middle of my show. It's a neat trick, but it's not useful to me, it has nothing to do with what I actually use a console for, and they're devoting three operating systems and valuable hardware resources to pulling this trout off? And it's Microsoft so I wouldn't hold my breath on it even being well coded.

This is the big problem that I am having with next-gen consoles: everyone is trying to cram troutty tablet controllers, media functionality, share buttons, and everything else down my throats. But if I'm buying a console, I don't want it to be a troutty PC or a troutty tablet. I want it to play games really well. All of it's other functions are damn near superfluous to me since they provide me no direct benefit, and if they want to try and compete directly with Smart TV's by providing the exact same functionality they will not only lose, but they'll do the exact opposite of their stated goal of bringing all of this functionality into one box. Because that already happened and is happening. TV's have been doing that for a while now, and do it better by virtue of including it in the one thing you need in order to actually watch TV.

But apparently people suddenly need the Xbox ONE to become an all in one box to sit under their all in one TV. This might have been somewhat interesting five years ago. As it is, they've already been beaten to market by a product they stand pretty much no hope of beating if all they're going to do is do the same stuff they're doing.

Actually, never mind, should have seen this coming. That's been Microsoft's business model for the last decade at least.

Besides, who needs TV anyway? We have internet, people! And I always thought of games to be better than TV; you participate in the story, or even create your own story. They can spark creativity, provide challenges to the mind, and trains you in making decisions. TV is outdated, xbox is surely clinging to the past because they have no idea what to do next.

Agreed, this was and is all about the console itself. That meant showing everything from Games to Videos to Apps aka Skype (built-in!:D).

Its amazing that they even decided to show any games at all during the conference, which from my perspective is what you do to show the level of detail available. So they at least had to show something. CoD isn't something I care deeply about- I'm just glad they stopped using the "modern warfare" tag, CoD isn't realistic in my opinion it's an arcade game with the same Code and Engine re-used and re-purposed every single time. The only thing CoD did different with that engine was add a new mode for Zombies in CoD: WaW...

Back to the point here. Xbox IS about games first and foremost. The day Microsoft says it doesn't play games is a very sad day. Then at that point people can really moan, whine, and complain. E3 is coming and Microsoft says that they have 15 Microsoft only games coming the first year X1 is out.


Rare has been too awkwardly quite, for far too long and I want more Conker, Banjoo & Kazooie, and yes more Perfect Dark! If I dont see that coming instead of more Kameo, I'm truly disappointed. Dont get me wrong Kameo was a great game, just that I greatly miss the mighty "Bear & Bird" dynamic duo. Microsoft now has a new studio called Xbox Entertainment Studio... XES must be made up of old FASA and Ensemble Employees along side new hires if any. So what does this mean for us? I honestly dont know but some of those Microsoft Exclusives are from there and Rare likely. Fable 4 needs to embrace great swords & gems again. Fable III did great with Peter Molynuex's vision, but we now need a more Fable TLC like game with the new Gooy System for real-estate and other such notable improvements. No the dog is great, but I dont see it being all important unless the dog can store gear and wear its own special Armours. Which would be cool.

Epic the guys that did Gears of War could be on something new or be doing another Gears, which means a new start for them moving away from Marcus and gang. Halo... 343 is working on 5 although we wont see one until 3 years later from H4 likely. Maybe we have another Halo Wars?? (yes please!) or maybe we have a H2 remake since the Live servers on PC are getting pulled in June early July. Could be that H3 finally sees the light of day on PC with a remastered edition in HD too on top of that. I really dont know where Halo is going at this particular moment yet because there is so much that Halo can do, even a show written by the world legendary Steven Spielberg is spectacularly amazing. Whom is my first choice and Perter Jackson second behind with Micheal bay in third should a film or TV show arise. All I can say for Halo; its about dam time! We will eventually get a Halo on X1 until then we will need to see what else Microsoft has planned during E3 for Halo if anything.

For those knocking on the sports thing, yes EA sucks- I know that. However they now have exclusive rights to make a Battlefront Star-Wars game. Which could be only something X1 does get. EA also makes Battlefield, 4 is on the horizon. Which there will be some that still will buy it and play. They are also merged with Bioware, the Mass Effect creators. It'd be interesting to see where M.E. goes now that it's had its end.

Annnd... Forza the guys at Turn 10 are amazing at what they do and they love their job. It shows in the game when you see it and yes even more so when you race that dream car of yours. I'm excited for F5 and while you might go say "I dont like racing" if you were paying attention to the extreme in-depth level of detail on the Cars. That is what you can expect your games to look like fidelity wise when the Dev takes the time to pay attention to detail. It's gorgeous and extremely beautiful. I bet it's a pre build of some sort they showed off, cause the Track in the video wasn't entirely finished, its a bit washed but you can see even it has improved over Forza 4.

Also we will see what we as gamers care most for the games, while we love to play games dont forget the console they are on are important to everyone form the Publishers/Devs that make your game to you as a person. It defines how we play and will be around for the next 10 years. This is a historical moment that only happens once a decade. While Microsoft certainly "has some fine detailed 'splaning to do" we MUST be patient for E3 and give them the benefit of the doubt. So that they can show us part two of X1 and its line up. Why?

For me, it mostly comes down to Danielle and I having to pay up on the Xbox One if we want to play online, while on the PS4 we won't have to pay. Between us, that's about six video games per year. I'd rather have ten games per year on the PS4 (online included) than four games per year on the Xbox One (online taking up the rest of our game cash). I just can't justify that kind of spend.

Yes Skype on the TV, Tablet, or Phone is mostly a want not a need. However I think it pushes our chat quality bar higher for Xbox. Which is needed. Also They showed Forza 5, Call of Duty: Ghosts, and Quantum Break. Those are indeed video-games, even if one of them was the one and only exclusive.

Y'know, I was going to make a move to PC gaming anyway, because it has better... everything, but I could at least understand why someone would prefer console gaming. With the advent of this console generation, it's now cheaper, better, easier and even more smurfing portable to just make a gaming PC.

It's like they are actively trying to sabotage their products and the market they are in.

Yeah I know, seems like everyone is in "over-reaction" mode. I kinda expected that though w/everyone's stubborn attitude of "show me games and give me nothing but games" since the unavailing of the Kinect back when most knew it as Natal. Natal is still a better name in my opinion.

I want a console focused on games too but Microsoft did say that they want to give you the best game console and more, well since TV is their new feature they needed to highlight that to show it off and they also figured E3 is when they can talk part two on the meat of the console, Video Games.

At least they showed three games. I'm not really caring for CoD but at least for once its a bit more different and after that every CoD will follow it, just like COD MW did for the 360. I think the conference went well but it didn't go how I might have planned it and presented such a monolith of cool. If they straight up said hey this is what we know it does, this is what is doesn't and this is what it will do. I feel some would have bashed it anyway, it's the 360 launch all over again.

At least we know Microsoft is indeed a human run company and can make mistakes like anyone does. ;]

Most of which has already dropped off again and they're back down to similar trading value as they were before Microsoft's press conference. Even with that 10% increase Microsofts shares were still 10% higher than Sony's at that point in time. It's completely anecdotal evidence.

Also 6 games? I don't know what you've been looking at but XBOX Live is about €59.99 a year and around £30 a year in the UK - so unless your buying 6 ancient used PS2 games for €6 each I sincerely doubt you're losing out on 6 games! Granted it's still like the price of one new game though.

The fact that a console can actually do the multi-tasking and provide some of the convenience I enjoy from my PC is something I actually see as a good thing. Being able to have a docked Skype video conference window so I can see how my friends react to something is already something we do on PC as it is when we've played stuff like L4D together.

As for the whole Smart TV thing - in Ireland these are still relatively new and very expensive. A console that can provide that functionality makes it accessible to people at a lower price point for their existing TV. Sure for people who just care about games it's all superfluous - but the trends in consumer electronics these days show that consumers want things that provide connectivity with all their devices. Sure it's a bit of a flip on the head where consumerism for the past 60 odd years has been constantly advertising at us that we must own this and that and the other and now to suddenly have all that functionality in one place - it's a break of the norm.

As for the hardware specifications debate, the PS3 had better hardware too - but in the long run it's not like that made a huge amount of difference when most publishers develop titles to be published on 360, PS3 and PC which means they need something that works across all of them.

Actually, they're still up 6-7% at the time I'm making this post, so I'm not sure how "most has already dropped off" - 3% isn't most. MS is still higher, certainly, but a 6-7% increase is a substantial change. To whoever said it's because of things aside from the conference, I'd love to know what those things were that happened at the exact same time as the conference.

I don't buy Xbox Live on a yearly basis, Danielle and I never know if we're going to be interested so we paid it month-by-month. £9 each per month at GAME. You're right that I could get it for less, apologies for any confusion, I was going by what I would pay for a month and then simply multiplying it. With two people having to pay in order for us to both go online on the one console (which is stupid, by the way), it kind of sucks balls that we have to pay for something which is 100% free on the PS3. Anyone who thinks that Xbox Live is still leaps and bounds ahead of PSN hasn't been keeping up with PSN's improvements over the years.

For the Smart TV thing, I'm not even talking about Smart TV, I'm talking about on demand services available from Virgin, Sky and others. I'm not really sure how this thing compares, but it's not something I care about in my console because I don't use my console to watch TV. I use Sky.

As for Skype, I can only really say what appeals to me, and I have no interest in video calling people while I game. If other people do, I'm sure this is a great thing for them, but I seem to recall something similar being punted out on the PS4 (and I didn't care for it on the PS4, either).

You're right - it'll be the games that make the difference, but the developers will make the games for the consoles that sell big. Do I want to have to buy two consoles? No. I'm honestly hoping one or the other crashes and burns, and based on what I've seen, I'm kind of hoping it's the Xbox One because the PS4 so far seems a lot more interesting to me. If they both succeed, I'll probably buy both but I don't expect to be playing online on the Xbox One if I have to pay to do so. That's just such an archaic model to me when PC gaming online has always been a free thing, as with PS4 online gaming, and for me they all deliver an even experience. If the PS4 starts charging for it's network, too, I'm gonna be gutted. :( But yeah, we'll just have to wait for E3. The good thing for MS is they don't have to do as much to improve on what they've already shown, while Sony got a positive reaction from gamers and it'll be interesting to see how they can top that. Easier to improve when you're low than when you're high, after all.

Yeah this was mostly meant toward Vivi. But the idea behind ONE which I think a lot of people are misunderstanding is it's not a separate TV service. It uses your existing one. So if you have Sky your Sky box (or probably even just the cable itself) can connect to your XBOX One and then you can watch it using the XBOX One rather than having to use the remote to switch between HDMI1 and HDMI2 on your TV. It's rather superfluous for most people I agree but it's still pretty handy.

You seem to have one of those friends lists that are in Netflix alot more than they really game, lol. If that is from yours. However I agree with you entirely. We will indeed see what is really what come E3.

I already stated we are overdue for a few Rare titles. Like Conquer, Banjo Kazooie and Perfect Dark. Also On the bright side Microsoft was able to keep a lid on everything right up to the reveal. Which I happy pat them on their back for. Also a fun fact since I work with game design as a job, I've had the pleasure of talking and working with the Xbox Team back in 2007 and they are all pretty nice and very intelligent folks. I also thought that Xbox One was going to be the 360's name when they did the E3 reveal back in 2005. This was cause of how they kept heavily hinting the 360 as the "one" piece that does it all, the media device for you and your family and so on. (If I find a clip I will post it and you might see why I thought so like I said)

Anyway the X1 definitely has got me wanting it, it looks very sexy ... and for me it also has integrated Skype. Which is something I've always wanted as a Skype user. This will make calls easier to manage and I wont miss them, additionally everyone on my Live Friends list will now be able to play things like D&D 3.5 cause of the Kinect being apart of the Xbox One experience. Which has me feeling pretty ecstatic.

I own all three major consoles from the prior/current generation, the Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3. I do like the Xbox 360, but that's mainly because of Japanese franchises like Resident Evil, Street Fighter, and Final Fantasy. That being said, Microsoft, and Sony for that matter, are going more and more down the road of only being a gaming vehicle for first person shooters like Call of Duty and Halo. I'm really not interested in these games. I'm becoming more of a Nintendo man more and more lately, because at least they still have fun franchises like Mario and Zelda. I'm afraid that we're going to get to the point where Japanese gaming is completely shut out from the West, apart from on a few consoles e.g. Wii U, 3DS. The other day I read reviews of Metal Gear Solid 4, where people were complaining that the game was "too Japanese" lol. MGS4 is the most Western influenced MGS game I've played in my life. I find it laughable that people would say its "too Japanese." Imagine if someone said a game was too Japanese in the 90s or early 2000s. People would laugh at them. Its just a sad state of affairs really. I really do miss the classic gaming era of the late 80s/90s/and early 2000s.

Backwards compatibility is less of a big deal than I think people assume. Yeah it was great to have in a few consoles but it's technically unfeasible to have at a realistic cost point. Generally speaking it was a pretty short-lived trend - the only "truly" BC consoles were the PS2 and Wii. The 360 and PS3 had something of an emulation layer that was really poorly supported and even was removed from later PS3 models. Honestly, considering how damning the overall presentation was for the One, I think the lack of BC is a silly one to get up in arms about.

As for the rest, it's a joke for gamers but I still think they're gonna move hella units on the living room features. I see it as being this gen's Wii in terms of mass appeal and use for either casual gaming or no gaming whatsoever (remember, the Wii was and may still be the #1 most used device for streaming Netflix). I have absolutely no interest in this box. Most likely I'll do what I have been doing - a Sony console and a PC, and I'm even on the fence about the Sony console depending on the exclusives. With my PC set up in the living room with a wireless KB+M and a 360 controller, I don't even feel like I really need a console. I'd just be really sad to miss out on the amazing exclusives. Uncharted, MGS4 and Little Big Planet were what made the PS3 absolutely worth the cash for me.

Meanwhile, there have been exactly 0 exclusives on any MS system that have been worth buying the system for. I know a lot of people prefer it for the online and the general service they provide, and those people will still probably buy the One. But I also believe enough people have been alienated by MS's move to casual-ify the console that this won't see the same explosive adoption that the 360 did, at least not by serious gamers.

Oh, yeah. Xbox Live. It used to be worth the money, because the quality of online gaming was so much higher on the 360 than the PS3. That changed a few years back, though, so now it's just the company :bou::bou::bou::bou:ily refusing people to use what they've already paid for unless they keep paying more. It's particularly smurfing annoying because most people who are interested in games consoles don't want to pay for Netflix, Skype, Sky, CBeebies etc just to play their games fully.

The main issue with the "one shoe to fit all" (oh, so that's where they got that stupid name!), is that it's not true and everybody already owns all the other shoes they need or want. If they don't own them, they don't want them. Nobody is going to look at the 3 and think "Oh, smurf me, I've always wanted to watch TV. I think I'll fork over a veritable smurfload of money and hassle."

Though seriously, it is too early to judge. I mean E3 is around the corner and they have yet to announce a release date. So there is still time to change some things or to reconsider some features.

I think people are over reacting about the TV content, since most consoles do that anyways now. I rather think about it as a secondary bonus. Though, to be honest I think that trying to sell it as that before a gaming console is rather foolish. They should emphasis more on their gaming line, which they will likely do at E3.

Between what they've stated and the stories getting picked up, I'm not sure how much is in fact true and what may just be speculation or a mix, but the fact that not much of it is sounding good is pretty telling of where things seem to be headed I think. We'll see what happens between now and launch, but right now I don't think I'd take the system if someone gave it to me.

The thing with the Xbox One is that it is a console of alienation.

Everything announced by the Xbox One just reeks of high development costs, which can put off some companies from developing games if it isn't a 'proven' formula (hence the surge of the FPS, like, everywhere) and that's just development. Once a game is out there, you need a HDMI T.V, and if you don't have a strong internet connection, then sorry! Not to mention if you're a smart, frugal chap who wants to save some money with a used game, then you're also out of luck.

I'm just incredibly skeptical. And first impressions count.

The Xbox reveal was focused primarily on the multimedia 'front of the room' aspect. The Xbox facilitates T.V, and movies and all of that. That basically is going to market towards families really and the sort of casual gamer you see.

Now, who routinely follows game conferences like this? Not families or casual gamers: actual gamers follow these events. What they essentially did was produce a conference geared mainly towards families while being scrutinised by gamers.

No wonder the reveal didn't go down well.

It didn't go down well to people like us. Hsu-iny has a point that MS clearly is going after a different market with stuff like this. In the end it will play Xbox One games and people will buy it to play those games. Maybe less of those people will buy it due to some of the restrictions it placed on gaming freedoms, but it's possible many of those people had already switched to PC gaming anyway. Different people, those who don't post on internet gaming sites, will also buy it for the other features. MS is clearly banking on the potential gain from that group to outweigh the loss from the other group. Hardcore gamers are really the minority in the gaming world.

I don't have a problem with the direction they're going but the name is just crap.

I was just addressing your statement about how it seems like a boneheaded move by discussing the gamble they're taking. It's really hard to tell if it'll wind up being stupid or brilliant at this point. They've certainly made a huge PR mess of things, but so did Sony when the PS3 launched.

My statement about them not playing with a full deck of cards in the post you quoted was specifically directed towards the idea of trying to use cloud computing to quadruple the power of the Xbox One. I really hope I don't have to explain why that is objectively terrible and they're complete morons if they think that's viable because there should be plenty of reasons which are immediately obvious to anyone with even a modest understanding of what the ramifications of requiring the use of cloud computing to run games would be for the end consumer.

Still, E3 is coming and those new Wii U owners will love Nintendo or GTFO the way for their approach- which has slowly been getting better and better since the 3DS in my opinion. It will be interesting to see how the sales data stacks up between Xbox One, Wii U, and PS4 in 3-5 years. Since this time Wii U is HD and has considerable backing from Nintendo for 1st party games and indie made games, while it seems to struggle with EA and Activision-Blizzard for addtional 3rd party support even though they bash it are indeed working on games for it. Meanwhile Sony certainly has its 1st party games. While some of its 3rd party "exclusive" companies, that may or may not jump to multi-console like Insomniac has (See; FUSE). On top of that they also encourage indie Devs to create for the PS4. It remains unclear what PS4 and Xbox One will become in its entirety until E3, but sure its dam interesting to watch and read about these so-called "console-wars' and see the people react in a "freak-out" sort of way. LoL.

I have called it; the Wii U is my main console with Xbox One in second, PS4 third. Figured it would work almost the same way this time for me. The only reason why is I have a soft spot for Nintendo and I love their direction and approach right now, however I'm just not really a Mii lover everything else aside. Which brings me to the Xbox One with all its features and my account from the 360 will transfer over without a hitch (and Yay~! Skype), this includes all my 360 friends, my avatar/gear and stats/Gamerscore. I have only one request to Sony- Communication (proprietary 1st party headsets and party chat) and the dissolve of timed exclusives the way they do them, in favor of a more clean and easier way to allow to release games multi-platform wise and actually advert 1st party exclusives and have a way for for exclusivity on PS systems, in favor of the supporting alll kinds of Developers and End-User/Consumer/Gamer doesn't get screwed in the process this way since only and I repeat only PS4 will get it. That and they need to clean house when it comes to adverting PS games, half of the PS3 games I own are well after they launched and I had no idea they were out in stores at all.

Sony is a messy ball of yarn to me and I want to play Sony games but they dont seem to want me as a Consumer/Gamer and Dev to care. I hope that the PS4 is a sign of good change for me and Sony.

Also as I have said once before; I will love my Dreamcast forever-n-ever and I would LOVE for SEGA to make another console but SEGA is now partnered with Nintendo for 1st party games from SEGA like Sonic the Hedgehog aka Lost Worlds for the WiiU & 3DS and future projects on Nintendo systems. Nintendo and SEGA seem to have finally become the best of best friends. No more of the slogans of old like "SEGA does what Ninten-DONT!" lamo... It's finally time I get to say goodbye officially to SEGA as a hardware company forever. SEGA will be sorely missed in the hardware biz.

Should SEGA come back around ever, I will be there in some-line somewhere really excited for them. Till then bye bye SEGA baby, I'll visit and see you in your games on the Big N's console and handhelds. (Congrats SEGA! :3)

Nah it was terrible, even worse than the PS4's conference and that thing was a disaster. I was just trying to ruse, but I guess it was too insane to even garner much attention :p

Honestly, I think they actually are hitting their demographic pretty well. If you read around the web, a lot of writers are not on the same page as their readers with the backlash. These guys have full-time jobs and do a lot of their gaming on their phone/tablet on the way to or during work, and when they come home to their significant other and/or kids, their Xbox is used for the various ways in which it can play media. To that end, it's not hard to find people who actually did find the Xbox One event fairly compelling.

Personally, I was actually intruiged by some of the gaming features they did announce. Especially with the way Achievements evolve along with the user's playstyle. As a big multiplayer addict, I was pretty inspired by them teasing that their server architecture would allow devs to expand what multiplayer can be into a much more ambitious undertaking. And as I said in the Sony thread, turning my gamer profile into its own content hub is one of my favorite things about Steam. I like what Sony is doing with sharing, but it sounded like Microsoft is going even further. I'd like to see this stuff in action, and I assume we will while watching someone play Fallout 4 and the Respawn game onstage at E3.

I was surprised that their big innovation is tied to live TV, though. Not just because of the Exodus away from live tv over the last few years, but more so because Microsoft was kind of its Moses :p.

Welp, Valve is up next and it should be interesting to see how they round out, and possibly subvert, the next-generation of consoles.

If the Steam Box isn't renamed the Sauna, I'm not interested in hearing about it.

Can't remember the specific number but I do believe it was in the millions. That's not an insubstantial number of customers they just told to smurf off.

I really don't see how this is meaningfully different than the experience I already have on Steam (it works both ways Vivi :p) right now, which does require me to authenticate every once in a while to access my collection. However, I do think they need to clarify exactly what happens when you don't sign in for a day, and how you remedy the situation.

The launch titles they announced this week make it seem like those 15 exclusives/IPs will indeed be a lot of Kinect and small downloadable games...

Most of the games I play on Steam only need to be authenticated at the time of install. Or at least, I've been playing them for a looong time without being online at one point.

At various times over the years I've been offline for 1-2 weeks when moving or changing ISP's and the like. I've also got a netbook I put Steam on to play some older titles on the go, and I could count the number of times I've had that netbook online in the last five years with one hand and still not run out of fingers. Guess what I've never had to do to play any of my Steam games? Now, if there are actually games on Steam that require me to be online every now and then to keep playing, then I have a problem with that as well. But it's not hard to see that if I've never come across this ever in my entire life that the requirements aren't nearly as stringent as requiring me to be online once every 24 hours. That sort of restriction will fundamentally lock out millions of potential customers, including people who bought a 360.

And don't even get me started on their basically handing publishers the keys to the kingdom on used games. And before you reply with the predictable "well you can't resell games on the PC either," that's true and that is a problem. But the difference is that companies like Valve at least recognize that really good sales benefit consumers and the industry and engage in them often. Microsoft, on the other hand, rarely discounts their digital games, even long after release when prices on other platforms have dropped significantly. And that's what they do when there's already a lot of price competition from used games and other platforms. I don't even want to think about how bad things would be with them including the ability to remove one of the major sources of price competition.

That's partially my old-school sentimentalities, though, in that I like physical media and I hate to see it disappearing in favor of an alarmingly increasing cast of competing services that are fragmenting and isolating themselves. I like having one disc I can save and transfer to all my devices rather than worrying about which ones can and can't access the services I bought the content on.

Microsoft, on the other hand, rarely discounts their digital games, even long after release when prices on other platforms have dropped significantly. And that's what they do when there's already a lot of price competition from used games and other platforms. I don't even want to think about how bad things would be with them including the ability to remove one of the major sources of price competition.

Well, a lot of the big multiplatform games, quite a few I bought on PC in the last year, are implementing these authentication requirements and we'll see a lot of them do so going forward. I guess I just don't think the frequency is meaningfully different, because it would be equally painless in either case, assuming this console can authenticate in its standby mode. Again, I totally agree that it's unnecessary and slightly offensive, but I can't say it would pose any real practical problem for me at all if my devices/services had something similar (again assuming they could authenticate in standby mode).

Well, I don't expect clarification to improve my perception of how brilliant this is. I just feel like there's a lot of ambiguity, I'm still incredibly confused as to how all this works. How will they qualify who the "family members" are that can access content anywhere? Is giving the game to a friend a permanent copy that both can always access or does it have to be traded back? And the whole trading in system has almost no definiteness to it at all.

I hope to god this console nosedives and then when Microsoft inevitably releases the streamlined version of it they have the good sense to remove all of these stupid smurfing authentication "features" and then sales immediately pick up. Just so they and all future console developers get the smurfing message loud and clear. Because god damn.

I went from unimpressed immediately after the reveal to very miffed once the first news of the used game restrictions came out. Now, after Microsoft PR's most recent attempt to sugarcoat their restrictive anti-consumer policies, I'm dead set against getting one. The 24 hour check-in, inability to rent or loan games, and allowing publishers to decide used game policies is yet another attempt to exert complete control over the entire gaming experience. That they canceled all of the post-conference interviews with the press at E3 tomorrow should tell you that they're trying to cover their asses.

Also, their PR seems to revolve around trying to disguise restrictions as new features. In particular, since European courts are supportive of the first sale doctrine, it might very well be that the Xbox One's restrictions will not be allowed over there. I'm a longtime 360 gamer, but there's no way in hell that I could buy the Xbone in good conscience. I guess this is the generation where I finally become a PC gamer; the Wii U will suffice for my console needs.

Also, it would be stupid for Sony not to capitalize on this, but I suspect that they might have some of the same policies in store, judging by their noncommittal response to questions about used games.

Now my Xbox mates will probly jump onto Playstation so therefore i can give this one a miss.

This console has everything in a console which i wish wouldn't exist.
Maybe E3 might make me change my mind. but until then, it stands that this has to be the worse console in history, imo

It's now been announced that, on launch, X-Box Live will only be supported in the regions shown in the map below (and listed in the spoiler tag). As we already know, no X-Box Live means no online, which means no game activation, which means no playable games. After Don Mattrick's blunt statement saying that if you have no internet then you better stick to the 360, now they're disadvantaging the people who have internet. Someone take the spade off Microsoft?

EDIT: It seems that the One will only be released in the regions given below, with the rest of the world given 2014 releases when they get XBL support for them. Even so, with Day One release in anywhere out of the US having virtually none of the TV features shown at the conference then it's a rather poor show from a company that should know better.

What's even more amusing, X-Box managed to win over Hideo Kojima to have him show off the debut gameplay of Metal Gear Solid V over what was expected to be a PS4 exclusive game.

2014 sounds right, Japan is getting more support from Microsoft and vice-versa this time around. The big M'soft even promised to give a better try at it this time. Japan just struggles with Microsoft there cause they 'think its too western.' (a comment I remember an employee from SE had said in a Mag I have and I wont be surprised if it still so but just say it ain't so!)

I just hope we can all get along. That way everyone wins! :3

the Japs don't give the slightest of trouts about the 360 and will probably care less about the XBone. The game section in Tsutaya for the PSP is 3 times the size it is for the 360, and the DS. Actually the PS2 as well has a bigger selection than the 360 does.

And Microsoft take yet another hit when Just Add Water and Oddworld Inhabitants has said that they will not bring their Oddworld remake, 'New 'n' Tasty!' to the X-Box 360 and the X-Box One after being told that the developers have to team with a publisher for them to allow it onto their consoles. In an interview with Oddworld Inhabitants boss Lorne Lamming he said:

'We don't have a publisher so we're not officially on the platform, even though we're compatible, even though we'll be ready to do it. Period.

Why do we need a publisher when we self-finance our games, we build our own IP, we manage our own IP and we've turned nearly two million units online as indie publishers sold - not free downloads? Why? What's wrong with us?'

Lamming went on to claim that Microsoft only care about the profit and are out of touch with their audience and lamented that they're not allowed the games on the X-Box when he personally helped them release it.

I'm overjoyed to see such a big name in the indie companies taking a stand against Microsoft for their ridiculous stipulations. Maybe others will follow suit and try and make Microsoft open their eyes and see that they're just hurting themselves.

Just did a Search for this interview, and came across a lot of other things. Looked like the DayZ developers were feeling the same way

And then an article where Sony makes an official stance to allow developers to self publish on PSN. Sony keeps winning the game by simply saying "We're not doing that". Microsoft is so pro-actively restricting gamers and developers, it's ridiculous..

I feel sorry for anyone in Sony's PR department. They've been made completely obsolete by Microsoft.

Right now I just hope Microsoft doesn't implode and just collapse from all the restrictive policies. I have been a fan yes, but as a Developer I worry as to where the Xbox brand is going. In the past Microsoft has been really helpful and instrumental in getting the console community mobile in the Independent side. They even bring the best of the PC to Xbox by finding game's Devs like Minecraft's Mojang or helping with game's like Stranger's Wrath by Oddworld for Xbox and have even helped Publish them. When did this change and just WHY?

That is what I would love to know. When did Microsoft become so cold to Developers?

If it is cause of X1, then that would mean they want to establish a system that keeps other Publishers in the loop. However I personally see nothing wrong with self-published material. Come-on Microsoft :colbert:

Paul, Dan and I were once dicking around in the Red Dead Friendly Free Roam (no player killing). Just dossing about and that. Making steady progress towards thew big fort in Mexico, but just going at our own pace. We shall call ourselves the Particularly Sarcastic 3. Then some new level 1 player appears on his horse, blasting by at top speed about 30/40 metres away. We shall call that newbie Xbox and the horse 360. Dan immediately withdraws a throwing knife - which we shall call Generation Replacement - and wildly throws it. There was no specific aiming or intent; he just lobbed it in the kids general direction.

It hit the horse right in the head, and the horse stopped dead in its tracks. The newbie went absolutely flying - and I mean smurfing flying - head over heels and crashed into the dirt about 20 metres ahead. It was glorious. And I never expected it to make such a magnificent metaphor for this upcoming generation.

Supposedly the games Microsoft showed at E3 were being run on a more powerful computer than what the XBone would be capable of.

There are pictures circulating of guys at E3 fidgeting with things in cabinets that don't look like XBones.

A lot of people are pointing fingers and shouting about how Microsoft are lying, but others are making the reasonable point that they're probably just dev kits. :p

Apparently all Sony PS4 games were running on proper PS4 Development Kits whereas Microsoft were just using high in PCs with (supposedly) GeForce GTX 780s in them.
