The reasons why it hasn't been discovered is that it's obscure and tedious as hell, but still pretty interesting that you can find brand new things even after all this time!

But it is pretty cool that this was found so late on. Nice to know people are still going through the game with a fine-toothed comb.
From what I read, some people did know about it.
It's always been listed in the FFIX Ultimania secrets section, but somehow no English speakers with the Ultimania (including myself, doh!) ever noticed it, so it's gone unknown by us for all this time, until someone posted about the Ultimania secret on the gamefaq's FFIX board, someone tested and confirmed it's real, and the collective minds of FFIX fans everywhere were blown.
Damn, but the sidequest looks boring as trout and the reward is something I could get by going to a synthesis shop, so I probably won't even bother with it.
Excalibur II perfect runs must now be re-completed to include this.

I would never waste my time on something so tedious. Maybe if it had some impact on the story like Zidane's relationship with the Nero brothers.
