WE E-SPORTS NOW
professional competitors? sure. athletes? maybe not.
What? No gamers here.

They also recognize pizza as a vegetable so let's not get too excited.
Sweet, I'm going to go beat up Mike Tyson.
US Government Recognizes League of Legends' LSC as Sport - IGN
Here's a citation for it, I guess. I think it's cool that the process is made easier for people from outside of the US to come play in a video game tournament like this. I wouldn't call gaming a sport, but maybe classifying it as one for the acquisition of sports visas was just the easiest way to make the process of travelling easier. I don't really know how that sort of thing works, though.
This is by far one of the least strange things a government has tried to do.
This doesn't even come close to the DiHydrogen Monoxide trout. :p
LoL, there is nothing athletic about gaming. Not a sport.
smh
i don't even
/long sigh
This is also why chess is considered a sport.
Monopoly should be considered a sport then.
Stuff gets competitive in my house when Monopoly is played.
Dinner would be really competitive in my house growing up. As my dad said, "in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, whoever eats the fastest, gets the most." :p
So I guess that's a sport, too!
Lol 'sport'
My thoughts on this are: "Are you smurfing kidding me? Jesus."
Do you even Rift, bro?
...I'll leave u_u
Nvm, I got a rep. You're stuck with me now!
I will found out whoever repped you and then proceed to tar and feather them.
If by professional athletes you mean people with no lives who do nothing to contribute to society and sit on their butts playing games all day, then yeah.
The LCS is pretty damn huge in all honesty - it's not many other games that have an officially run league in their major territories with weekly matches in live broadcast shows. Bash LoL all you want but Riot have really done a better job of jumping on that opportunity than Blizzard or Valve have. There's really not that much that rivals it right now. Even StarCraft 2's World Championship Series isn't getting the viewership that the LCS is which is something to ponder considering how massive the original StarCraft eSports scene was in Korea which lead to the founding of KeSPA and pretty much put the likes of GomTV on the map.
As for the US classing them as athletes, it certainly solves a lot of permit/visa issues that organizers otherwise have to deal with. Just seems more like using a legal loophole to smooth the hosting of these events more than anything else.
Yeah but they could have at least picked a game like Aurora or something

I mean if chess is a sport then this is too
Stop being so sensible, Auly! :colbert:
Don't worry. I hear CIV VI: eSports Edition is coming soon™
Oh I'm going to lose that one hard
Those Civ IV grogs are something else entirely and I wouldn't even have a shot in hell
There was actually a TV show in the UK a fair few years back that re-enacted historical battles which they then displayed using the Total War engine. It was pretty cool.

Sports are for dudebros and boring normals
Therefore a videogame does not fit the definition because it's (SPOILER)better
man video games are so MAINSTREAM now
They're not recognizing that though, they are recognizing League of Legends which I play and attest is NOT a sport. I also play Chess and know it is also not a sport. I was always under the assumption that you have to exert considerable amount of physical movement for it to be considered a sport. If this isn't the case then a lot of really absurd things could also be consider sports if it's just done competitively.
If you can call football a sport, then you can pretty much call anything a sport.
I was more meaning that there should be a DDR tournament, and it should become a sport. That's about the only game I can think of that really gives a workout while you play. I was feeling out of it and for some reason decided that typing "Dance Dance Revolution!" was enough to convey that, haha.
This is embarrassing, tbh.
Friend of mine once said Poker is a sport because it is a thing that people do professionally for money.
I guess Lawyering is a sport now too.
