didn't we have this thread a few months ago?
anyway time for some of the classics
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen):
Jimi Hendrix Experience - All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan):
Santana - Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen (Fleetwood Mac/Gábor Szabó):
The Byrds - My Back Pages (Bob Dylan):
Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Blinded by the Light (Bruce Springsteen):
Johnny Cash - Hurt (Nine Inch Nails):
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Little Wing (Jimi Hendrix):
Dead Kennedys - I Fought the Law (The Crickets, albeit with a few liberties taken to the lyrics):
Metallica - Am I Evil? (Diamond Head):
Emperor - A Fine Day to Die (Bathory):
I could go on. I apologise in advance if I have already taken all of someone's favourites.
Terrible covers include Madonna's ruination of Don McLean's "American Pie" and Britney Spears' desecration of the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" (actual good covers have been recorded by Devo and the Residents, although neither is recognisable as the same song and the latter in particular will probably sound like noise to a lot of people here).

I can't find it right now on my phone but I forgot about Toxic covered by Mark Ronson! That song is badass.

I'll second Placebo, Dead Kennedys, and Jeff Buckley...there's a lot of good ones in here, actually.
Converge - Disintegration (The Cure cover)
Filter - Happy Together (The Turtles cover)
Scarlett Johansson - I Don't Wanna Grow Up (Tom Waits cover)
A Static Lullaby - Toxic (Britney Spears cover)

This thread is like Halley's Comet. If Halley's Comet smoked some meth and reared its head every three weeks instead of every 76 years.

siri link youtube video hounds of love futureheads
siri link it on my forum post

Kate Bush's version isn't great. He actually uses her in his cover, haha, barely as backup vocals.
"Running Up That Hill" by Kate Bush is one of the best pop songs ever written. Period.
- actually, Kate Bush's cover of Elton John's "Rocket Man" is pretty great too. And Cat Power is notoriously good at covering songs. "The Covers Record" and "Jukebox" are both wonderful records consisting of just covers.
For the longest time I didn't even know this was a cover.
Nine Inch Nails - Dead Souls (Joy Division cover)

I don't know if I have a favorite cover, but I've been really enjoying Postmodern Jukebox's 20s-50s-ish covers of current pop songs.
Here's Thrift Shop:

I got this post on my phone and went aaaaah The Crow! So glad someone else loves this song! I also did not know it was a Joy Division cover.
Along the same lines of The Crow, I don't find this cover of Cry Little Sister from The Lost Boys too terrible. The video is atrocious, though and watching it makes the song terrible and hilarious, but I kindof like the electric guitar/rock twist on it. Of course, the original is best. :jess:

Glad you mentioned The Lost Boys! I'm a big fan of Aiden's cover for the sequel.
Blinded by the Light/ Mandred Mann
Almost the entire album of Nirvana Unplugged in New York
Rivers of Babylon/ Sublime
Total Eclipse of the Heart/ Bonnie Tyler
Love Hurts/ Nazareth
Turn, turn, turn/ The Byrds
Twist and Shout/ The Beatles
Almost every cover song Cash or GN'R did I like better than the original
I also like how Joe Cocker got stoned with help from his friends, and then covered a song about it.
And many many more

I'm going to assume that the only reason A Perfect Circle's eMOTIVe record isn't mentioned here is because it was such an obvious choice that it was overlooked.
That's why I haven't said anything until now. I often forget these are covers.
