the textures are so smooth, like they've taken all the smurfing personality and washed it away. Seriously Square Enix this is the ONE TIME where nobody wanted you to touch a goddamn thing and you go and smurf it up.

I remember reading an article about how Square were excited about the range of emotions they could portray with their pixels. The laughing, etc. But smurfing hell, there is more emotion in those crappy pixels than there is in this stupid airbrushed emotionless trout.

Joking aside, first screenshot is bleh, second is passable, third doesn't bother me but they seem to not care about day or night anymore. I'm surprised this is just getting a mobile port. You'd think this would be something that'd get a 3DS or PlayStation Vita re-release. Not sure if it would be any better that way but just the pretense of being on one or the other would at least give more incentive to try. I'll never understand Square's sudden obsession over mobile phone games. Unless it's just because they feel if it's on a cellphone then they don't have to try.

I actually think the sprites look a lot more true to the concept art Eyes on Final Fantasy - Final Fantasy VI Characters
But at the same time it doesnt seem to blend with the background and they use way too much blur filtering.
It looks like they used photoshop's smudge tool to try and remove the pixels. The whole thing just seems unnatural and cartoony, like they wanted to be Dofus but without all that hot hot French anime. Lets just say stuff like this is why I refer to the company as Square Penis.
Actually the sprites are starting to grow on me, it's more they just don't fit into the background which is what is making them look bad.
Maybe it's because I'm used to my nice, grainy FFVI GBA port but it all looks a bit too... clean. I'm not a fan of the sprites at all and the font they have used is just horrible.
I do like the artwork for Terra on her speech bubble though, that looks great. I'll definitely be sticking to my GBA to experience this game.
See, someone commented to me that Terra looked stoned in the port's version of her portrait and now I can't get it out of my mind whenever I look at it.

I can't help but hope that these images are some kind of prototype and they will release the final, updated screenshots where they have gone back and overlayed more texturing onto the sprites.
Again, they should have made it look like the PSP ports of FFI and FFIV. I kind of lost my boner looking at this.

This isn't just me being boring and old and hating change, I just think they look terrible and amateurish. The original sprites made the game look an awful less cartoon-y, which is not something I'm inherently opposed to as I rather like the Wind Waker-style Zelda games.

I have a distaste for the character models, but perhaps in an original game I would not mind them so much. It's just that I cannot see anywhere near the level of personality they managed to convey through a couple of smurfing pixels like two decades ago. The fact that the character models and background don't go together at all as well is shameful. Oh yeah, I actually meant to comment on that initially but got distracted by the nicer artwork The Man posted. The game's pretty explicit about telling you where to go, and considering how linear most of the first half is I just don't see the need for the hints. By the time the game really opens up you've explored the entire map anyway.
I can't bring myself to care too much about that because (a) it's optional and (b) it's primarily there for people who put the game aside for months as is presumably more likely to happen with cell phone games. The interface for it is just as hideous as the rest of the game though.

In battle with The Wolf of Narshe. The battle controls are pretty smooth. You can scroll up and down each person's list of commands to select what you need. You can also tap on an enemy first and it will execute (or open the sub-menu for) the first available character's first command. I was hoping the "Auto" feature of FFIV would be included but it doesn't look like it.

I don't think it looks anywhere near as bad as people are claiming.
Those screenshots actually look better than the ones in the original post. Either some last minute touch ups were done or there's something wrong with my eyes, I don't know.
The screenshots in the first post are blown up about twice as big as they normally appear when looking at a phone. I tried to size my images down to relative phone dimensions. I wonder if some reviewers that don't like the graphics are on a device with a huge screen. My phone screen is four inches so graphics tend to look a little crisper and less jagged with less artifacts.

I don't think that anyone was saying all of the graphics were awful. I think it was pretty clear from the initial screenshots that it was a mixed bag. Some of the enemies and other things look all right, but others like the characters and portraits, and some of the background elements just look atrocious compared to the originals.
the only thing I don't like is the battle command menu and the umm colour thingy for the menu. I love having all the different colours available, and 6 just isn't enough.
I have Final Fantasy VI for Super Famicom/SNES, PS One and GBA and instead of another 2D remake I would like to see one in 3D.

So of the three previous styles, I think all would have been acceptable. But they did something weird, and that's stupid. The one time you want Square Enix to like, stay in character, they cock it up. It's just... why? Why touch it at all? A friend of mine has been emulating FFVI on his phone for years and it looks fine, there was no need to like... whatever they did. Outsourcing, if that is the case, is clearly worse a decision. Maybe everybody needs to stop touching Final Fantasy for a while.
EDIT: yes and I know this is a mobile version not an upgrade for a new platform but smurfing hell surely it would've made more sense to just hotwire it for a mobile as opposed to redoing the entire smurfing in grossy mcgross style
Yeah, I think VI could've used a bit more of a graphical upgrade than what they did, although I doubt we'll ever see it.
On the characters, while I don't think they're as charming as the originals and I'm not a fan, they're not irredeemably bad and an affront to humanity either. I've seen a lot worse.

After some playing around with photoshop today, I'm actually not sure how much drawing has been done to them. I'm currently playing around with certain upscaling and interpolation filters to see how close I can get an original sprite to the phone-version sprites. So far, I've gotten very very close and I haven't really spent a lot of time on this yet. I'm also far from a professional at photoshop or whatever.Quote:

I'm also happy to report that FFVI mobile does have an "auto" option in battle, much like FFIV mobile. Press the double arrow button at the top left corner of the battle screen and all of the characters will repeat their last battle action. Makes for a much more enjoyable battle experience.

Mostly everything looks OK except the characters themselves. The enemies look good with those dark heavy outlines and shadows. The portraits and battle backgrounds are awesome. It makes the character sprites look even more terrible by comparison.
I've been following this thread and I'm kinda starting to get used to the look. Still don't think I'd ever buy it with how readily available emulators are.
Those heavier outlines really help give the enemies and other things a crispness and readability that those character sprites lack. It's like most of the art is just really nice, crisp looking versions of the already stellar art from the original game. And then they hired some guy who'd never seen outlines, shadows, or depth before to do the characters. They clash so much.Quote:

And I guess when you think about it, it is an iOS game. So I guess cheapness is.. okay.

I think the summons are the only thing in the game that look all right.
My earlier reaction stands: Many of the elements look good individually, but they fail to mesh well and the character sprites look horrible. They have done a pretty good job upgrading the enemy/esper art though.
Still in agreement. The Opera battle (above the rafters) almost looks like it was designed with the character sprites in mind and so it almost works except that I still hate the character sprites.Quote:

Shoot, I don't remember for sure but I think they did. So far everything has pretty much been a port of the GBA version. The script is definitely the GBA version.

So, after waiting forever to finally get the iOS version, started playing it. Gameplay, it's nothing but an improvement, example, Cyan charges his Bushido passively, AFTER you've selected which ability you want to use, freeing you to continue putting commands for other characters.
The graphics, aren't nearly as bad as they may seem, in fact, a lot of the effects are really really good. Like the waves from fire, or being under water. The music and sound effects are straight from the SNES, no changes there, except the sound of blowing wind, that's pretty much it...
Now my cons.
Selecting multiple enemies, except for the fingers pointing at all the enemies, has 0 indication on the targeting nameplates below.
The game breaker, FPS inconsistencies. World map. 60fps, looks wonderful, nice, and smooth. Combat, missing frames, spell and ability animations are lower quality animation than the original. It's just the abilities missing too... Like they never put them in... Since other parts that are playing simultaneously, are at a higher FPS. Needs to be patched ASAP, since it really takes away from the feel of the game, really destroys immersion.

My suggestion for those who want to play FF6 on mobile is to download John GBA Lite and then acquire a ROM for the GBA port. But, uh, you didn't hear that from me. :chocobo:
gameboid is totally the best android emu and also you don't need to get it with ads through gplay
