Um... Chrono Cross? Unless you count Bravely Default as non-FF, then that.
I think that Romancing SaGa 3's soundtrack is the best. I get excited even getting into a battle because the battle theme is so good, and all the character themes are pretty amazing. Even dungeon themes are really good, and leave a smile on my face while I explore.
The Super Mario RPG soundtrack is so good.

It's a simple fact. Uematsu is great but Mitsuda is better.
Xenogears had the best soundtrack of anything ever.

Add another vote for Chrono Cross! The soundtrack was the best part of that game. CT is great too, but I didn't walk down the isle at my wedding to a CT song.

Xenogears, for me, is the clear answer.
After FF7, Xenogears is my favorite soundtrack. Some of the late game tracks get less love because the game basically shoves half the plot in your face at once and reuses a lot of the same OST in that time period.
My Village is Number One and The One Who is Torn Apart give me chills and almost scare me due to how attached they make me and they really lure me into the feeling.
Mitsuda and Uematsu deserve to share a Nobel Prize.
I vote for Chrono Cross.

Hiroki Kikuta (Seiken Densetsu 3, Secret of Mana)
Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Xenogears, etc.)
Motoi Sakuraba (Star Ocean 2, Star Ocean 3, etc.)
Most people seem to think Valkyrie Profile was Sakuraba's crowning achievement.
I haven't heard that one :( I find it difficult to imagine him composing a more awesome song than "Highbrow" though
I never played Chrono Cross, but Chrono Trigger has and will always be one of my favorite soundtracks of all time. I might not call it the absolute best, but it's certainly up there.
Chrono Trigger followed by Seiken Densetsu 3 followed by KH1/KH2 (I dont know which is better).
Whenever I try to think about the Chrono Cross soundtrack the annoying battle theme gets in my head and I cant actually recall the good parts of the soundtrack.
