Highscore Challenge - Eyes on Final Fantasy 2048 - WINNER REVEALED

Greetings Nerds and Nerdettes!

After a month Hiatus we're back and playing another round of Highscore challenge. This time I've opted for something relatively simple and we'll be playing Eyes on Final Fantasy 2048.

2048 is a numbers game where you slide tiles around a board combining them in order, doubling them in size. This continues until you reach the 2048 tile. Here on EoFF, we're doing it differently! All the tiles are final fantasy related!



Here's how to play:
1. Go to this webpage
2. Aim of the game is to combine the two of a similar image to create the next item in the series. So for example 2x FFI = 1x FFII / 2x FFVII = FFVIII etc. The game is over when you either reach the final tile, or run out of possible moves. If you still don't understand how to play, try playing the original first to get an idea of how the game works
3. When you can't make any more moves, take a screenshot of the score and post it here.



It's as simple as that. The 2048 tile is special though, as it is specifically EoFF related. The first person to find what that tile is will get a high five or something. - Psychotic is due a high five as he was the first player to find the Looney Bob tile.

Oh God, my eyes! I kept confusing I and III! Managed to get to 15,000 with FFX. I'll post officially once I hit the 2048 tile! :D

Matt noticed that when he played it himself. Then he changed nothing.

I don't get it.

I got got a score of 300 by swiping randomly and don't ever intend on playing again. Back to Infamous: Second Son for me.

Match the tiles. Put FF1 with FF1 et voila. Now, the thing I didn't get when I got my 3,000 score was that two FF1 tiles together make an FF2. Two FF2 tiles together make an FF3. And so on.

It makes infinitely more sense if you actually play 2048 before giving this a go.

Uh yeah, that's exactly what I said :p In this case it just so happens that 1+1 does equal two.

FF1(2) + FF1(2) = FF2(4)
FF2(4) + FF2(4) = FF3(8)
FF3(8) + FF3(8) = FF4(16)
...
FFX (1028) + FFX (1028) = Happy Bob (2048) and win.

If you want to practice before playing, the original makes a lot more sense. Try playing it first if you're not sure on the rules.

Pyschotic is in the lead, followed by Colonel Angus and then Bubba. Comeptions are open until the 15th, so See if anyone else can beat psychotic's score by then. I know a certain Kiwi managed to get a 5 digit score over the weekend....

Protip guys: Pick a corner and, for the love of god, make sure the highest tile stays in that corner. Next, pick a direction and, for the love of god, make sure the other tiles flow in that direction, with the largest closest to the corner tile.

I'm curious. Since the game can not be carried on after you hit the win, is it a "highest score wins" or "lowest scores wins" for those who actually complete the game?

Good point. Highest score rewards failure, in this case.

I imagine it would be highest score wins regardless.

Perhaps there can be a point bonus for those who actually finish? What do you think GAMEMASTER

Sort of. I mean, it's two different kinds of difficulties, really. Lower 'win' scores mean you have achieved it in fewer turns, which requires a fair bit of skill, but equally to get a really high score could require sacrificing many chances to win in order to bump up your score and thus be seen as a trickier thing to do. I imagine there is an "average" score that is easiest and then you could argue that both relatively high scores and relatively low scores are equally impressive. Provided you reached 2048, of course.

In my OP, the score received when the player got the 2048 tile was 20,392. Our first finisher was psychotic with a score of 21,052. This means to me that the scores can differ from player to player.

I'm gonna stick towards "Highest Score wins". It encourages risky play by elongating the game. I want to see someone with 2x FFX ready to match, and then losing. The tears will be delicious if it happenshttp://media.tumblr.com/c75d177c49bb...ppnso1_400.gif.

I do encourage all scores to be posted though. I'll update the OP with current scores just now. A lot of entries this month which I'm quite happy about.

This game is worse than Free Willy 3.

I have won this thing like eight times but I always end up with around 500 less points than Psy. xD Oddly enough my best win so far was my first one.Attachment 58785

I have a cracking score of 31,588 on my phone with "never ending" turned on.

Not at all. My posted score was my final experience with this torture.

I will just continue to post insults about the game every now and again to piss everyone off.

I dunno, I really like this game. >_>; I can win it almost every time now. My scores are, unfortunately, getting lower even though I'm trying to get them higher. xD I'm too efficient.

This game is very, very dangerous. It is crack. Absolute crack. Got nothing done that I wanted to do this weekend (SIMS FINALE: CANCELLED) because of it.

Have you managed to best your own first win, Psy? I can't seem to get to within 100 points of it. :(

I have not touched this game since doing so and do not intend to do so. It is the Devil's work.

So far the highest I've gotten is seeing FF IX.

This one went all kinds of screwed up but I got there in the end. And because it went all kinds of screwed up... new top score! Finally beat that darned Psychotic guy. And now I can actually enjoy the game by being able to win efficiently without getting annoyed at myself for it. Yay!

Awwwww man, the game that has consumed Loony_Bob for the last 3 days has yielded him with 1st place!

There is only 100 points in it now guys, so this is a close race. With 10 days to go can anyone dethrone the admins!?

And here I thought that I would never play 2048 after beating it a couple months ago. :p Once you know how to beat it, then beating it is pretty easy. the only reason it's not a higher score is because I didn't know the game would end when I got the BoB tile.

This one went so bad, but then it started going really well again for such a long time and this is as high a score as I've ever gotten by some massive distance without actually winning. xD

Whoops. Forgot to close entries 2 hours ago like I said. No new entires came in so I'm good! Phew.

So it turns out that no one could actually beat out Admins. Psychotic taking first place early on, but being dethroned by Loony Bob shortly after. He has won this iteration of the High Score Challenge with a score of 21,152. Congratulations!

This was an awesome High Score Challenge, Matt.

Congrats to BoB on winning this. I hope you'll share some tips.

The trick is to only go in three directions. I never once went down on the run I submitted, and you can see I could have continued the game for a lot longer if the game didn't end once I got the tile. What ends up happening is you have your bigger tiles together, and you can manipulate the smaller ones in the bottom rows then slide them up when they are ready. Then all you need is a little luck. :p

Bobs secret? Develop an addiction to 2048 when this thread was brought up and never stop playing.

Congrats to all the winners! Though I think we can agree that the people who spent a prolonged period on this game are all losers...

Looking forward to the next high score challenge. Hopefully the next one won't make me want to stab myself in the eye with a fork.

I tend to work towards the lower right corner, stacking high numbers on the right side. Looked around the web for something that best covered my strategy and I suppose this will do to start...

...and if things go bad for any reason, I work in two directions (top and bottom). Perhaps I'll YouTube it or something someday, it basically involves lacking any sense of panic and instead selectively working the FF1's up and down along the left depending on what will favour me most. This leads to almost every move getting 1-2 merges and helps clear up the board in quick time. I've had a full board before and still managed to get it all the way down to about 3-4 tiles using this method. It doesn't always work, of course, but it's the best "disaster recovery" strategy I've stumbled across.

Yeah, I didn't really look up any methods but that's pretty much what I did. Keep it all on the bottom row - and then bottom two rows once you start building up a head of steam - unless it all starts going to Hell.

First thing I did when I booted up this morning was try Qwertysaur's strategy & nearly doubled my highest score. Basically, my biggest mistake before was not keeping things to one side. I would for quite a while, then I'd shift it in the other direction. Now I know that's where I was screwing up. Thanks guys.
